  1. After the death of Pigpen, the Grateful Dead pretty much played the same mix of songs from about 1973 to the time Brent Mydland passed away in 1990 . They kicked ass in the process. I'll never forget the second night of two nights of Wilco at Irving Plaza, NYC some time around '98 or so. About a third of the way through the show Jeff sensed that the crowd was getting unsettled because they were playing the exact same setlist as the first night. He said something along the lines of "what are you complaining about, a few blocks from here you have a theater district where the same play is performed 365 days a year. This post has no point whatsoever. I follow you all that want some variety I just don't bother commenting on it. It is what it is. Wilco will love you baby.

  2. I'm willing to guess, and actually hope, that Jeff doesn't quite have 1,000,000 things he'd rather do than play rock'n'roll. Maybe 30-40 things, but 1,000,000 is a lot of things to prefer to do rather than something so incredible. He is, after all, rather good at it and seems to enjoy doing it; besides, I don't think you can argue that we don't appreciate him. Not one person who's said anything about the setlists has said anything bad about the music they hear, just that they'd like to hear more or Jeff and Wilco's work. Is that really such a bad critique of a band?

You're right, a million things might not be all that realistic!

I'm on a lot of music messageboards due to my being a fan and I love collecting and trading music, but you sir, are the most pretentious asshole that I've ever seen on the internet.

You must not spend any time on Ween's messageboard!

  4. this came out like crap because it was my cell phone, but this is what greeted concert goers that stepped off the train on their way to the show last night:

    Very Nice!

I have a suggestion for those of you that love to whine about the setlists. Stay home and monitor the song selection from the comfort of your couch. In fact, you could set your entire Wilco collection on shuffle, report to us what songs came up and truly enjoy yourselves in absolute bliss with no frustrations. Please keep in mind that Jeff's got a million things he'd rather do than to play rock'n'roll for you.

  5. How'd they pull off Deeper Down? Rusty first try, or did it live up to the recording?

Cautious but very solid. The new songs are steadliy improving since the Spanish shows. Those of you seeing them later in the summer are in for a treat when they get rolling on these. People love to bitch about audiences on this board. We traveled from Colorado for this show and it was one of the best audiences I have ever been a part of. Pomona, you, the Fox Theatre and In-N-Out Burger rock!!!! From my perspective it appeared that Jeff was having a blast up there.

  6. I love Jackson Hole! The pictures are all so beautiful!

    Did anybody see Son Volt?

No, but I heard they were atrocious as always. Someone who was there said they were the absolute low point of the show on Sunday. It's funny how when Uncle Tupelo split I always thought Son Volt would be the one to really hit stardom. Completely irrelevant and who cares about my opinion but the two Son Volt shows I have seen rank down there in the worst two shows I have ever seen in my life. I am not exaggerating when I say they are down there with Stone Temple Pilots (the third worst show). I was so pissed when I went to see SV a second time....I should have known better.

  7. cool pics! Wilco, camping, and hanging with the kids all in 1 night...the best. How did they dig their first show? I'm waiting for a safe outdoor venue to take My little girl :music

They absolutely loved it. I've never seen anything like the dancing my five year old daughter displayed during Spiders. I'll never forget that! When I found out they were done at 8 it seemed like the perfect road trip since the kids love'em.

  8. Overall, the venue was a beautiful place to hold an outdoor concert. The issues with the Salt Lake elitist trying to enjoy Wilco and completely ignoring Fleet Foxes was a true let down. Also, with no standing section, there was no room for the real fans to get close. Only the VIPs got up front. The band was great, the venue was nice, but the crowd and the layout were terrible. I met the band afterwards, by their bus, since the only passes given for the meet and greet were to the same members that got VIP tickets. The band was awesome and I got my LP signed. I thanked them for the show and left disappointed, not by the band or their performance, but by the circumstances and people that surrounded a truly great performance.

You must not have made any effort whatsoever. A band member got me a ticket into the show and I was left to fend for myself as far as seating. As soon as people started to stand I walked up and was on the second row for the remainder of the show. It was the easiest that move has ever been at any show I have attended in my life. Also, I hung out with that particular band member for an hour or so after the show and he said it was one of his favorite gigs he has ever played and loved the crowd and the setting. He wasn't exaggerating. Yes, the crowd started a little slow but once the alcohol kicked in, they were into in wholeheartedly. Considering many people in there weren't really into Wilco as a diehard fan, their response was pretty remarkable. Unfortunately not every show can be the equivalent of what goes down in Chicago or New York. I'm not from SLC and I have no reason to defend the place nor the people. I don't say this to argue with you. If the band was happy(which they were extremely happy), you shouldn't be bothered yourself!

    Was there a poster?

    yes

  9. Yet another fantastic show at another kick-ass venue. I wish I had known it was BYOB! I was wondering why everyone was walking up with coolers and was curious how they were going to check all of them at the gate. When I walked through with my backpack unchecked I quickly figured it out. A couple of locals explained the venue was a piece of crap until a renovation close to a year ago. It sits high up on the foothills on the edge of the University of Utah campus overlooking the valley and lights of Salt Lake City.

It was a very hot and dry day in Salt Lake. However, the sun set right around the time they took the stage and a perfect breeze was blowing onto the stage and the temperature probably dropped at least twenty degrees. It was the quintessential Rocky Mountain summer evening with the natural air conditioning steadily cranking away. John mentioned it might have been one of his favorite venues they have ever played when you consider the setting, sound (on-stage and crowd) and the crowd.

It started off a little slow as the crowd were all sitting down on blankets and lawn chairs to start the show. They slowly began to get on their feet, move towards the front of the stage and the energy started creeping up some time around the middle of the show. Spiders got the crowd into a literal frenzy and the encore numbers were all reminiscent of the tightly packed, smaller venue days. It was great to see them having so much fun last night.

I am about 95% sure on the song list. Seems like there might have been something after I'm the Man but after reviewing their songs I can't find it so it might be right. I'll post some pictures later this evening.

  10. I a new fan of Wilco in the last couple of years. I heard a few songs and just fell in love with their sound. Last night in CoSprings was my first Wilco show and I have to say that I don't think that there is a better live act out there. Just simply amazing! I saw some tape stands last night and was wondering where most Wilco shows are shared online? Like I said I am new to the Wilco community and any help would be great. I would love to relive my first live Wilco experience.

probably show up here http://bt.etree.org/ or here http://www.cotapers.org/torrents.php

  11. Is anyone from this board going to be recording this show?

    Just wondering.

    Thanks

Yes, I am calling my answering machine with my cell phone when they hit the stage. I will be standing near the soundboard so it should sound phenomenal. I'll have it posted to either bt.etree or DaD within 48 hours. I have pasted the lineage below.

  12. I'm praying one of the photographers captured John's leap. I didn't have my camera out, but there was plenty of warning as he climbed his way up. Pure rock n roll.

What song was it that caused such behavior? I find it hard to believe that IJTS would build such energy. No knock on the song it's just that I don't recall Neil Young ever jumping off speakers during songs like Sugar Mountain! Was it during I'm a Wheel or something?

  13. Despite my shin bruises, stab wounds, and blue balls, I really appreciate how hard you jam.

So I guess in the end the fat guy you are referring to aroused you. I hope you were able to relieve the tension as soon as you got home :) I think the dandruff in your beer part is pretty disturbing! Great visual of that!

Could someone go into more detail re: John jumping off a speaker(s)?

  14. Freakin' amazing tonight. Crowd reaction for "Just that Simple"? Possibly one of the best things I have ever experienced.

Having known John since I was 17 (1985) I have to agree with you and it was the greatest moment as a music fan I have ever experienced in my life. Listening to the show today the crowd going fucking nuts (that brought on the encore) to Pres. of USA - Peaches might be another highlight of the evening. My 20th Wilco show since the AM tour and tonight was in my opinion, the best I have seen.

  15. Thanks everyone for the response. Definitely gives me a better feel for what to expect going in. Pitchfork is hosting a party at Emo's Friday w/Peter, Bjorn, and John, RJD2, and Girl Talk. I'm for sure hitting that. Other than that, I'm pretty wide open. I've decided not to get too set on seeing one show in particular and just goin w/the flow. Should be a great week, can't wait. Thanks again.

Most important is make sure you eat at Rudi's BBQ or the Salt Lick. The supermoist brisket at Rudi's is second to none!

  16. How much were the tickets?

It will be hit and miss for them this tour. Sunday and Monday shows probably won't draw the biggest of crowds, unless they are in LA, San Fran, or something like that. They will have a huge turnout in Chicago of course, but i'm sure alot of East coast shows like Boston, DC, New York, Philly, Baltimore will get good turnouts. Either way, i'm sure they love these respectful crowds.

I'm sure of it too. John said as much last night, commenting on "thanks for listening" and the lack of conversations. I forget how much they were. Somewhere between $10 & $15

  17. I agree. I am somewhat mixed on the turnout. On one hand, I wish more people showed up so the guys could feed off the energy and make some more $$, but on the other, a packed house with half the audience talking would take away from the scene. Fucking great, great show. Like someone else said, it's everyone else's loss! I picked up the blue owl shirt too and the tote bags are only $5. Same setlist (different order) as previous nights on the tour. The Parish was a great venue. See you in Denver.
