  1. I was at the rally yesterday and yes Golden Smog was there and yes the whole event blew my mind (I don't see the thread that talks about Obama in MN-if there is one I apologize for repeating information). My friends and I lined up outside the Target Center just before 12:00 for 1:30 doors, and we were already among a couple thousand people. The line continued to grow and grow even while we were entering the venue. Golden Smog started playing probably at about 3:00, I think, and I had no idea they were going to be there so I essentially flipped out like the teenage girl that I am. Anyways, they played very well, and I especially enjoyed hearing "Glad and Sorry". It just was incredible to have the opportunity to see both Barack and Golden Smog in one place together.

p.s. I was also very glad that "Ooh Child" was a part of the mix tape before the speech.

  2. i've thought of it, but forget which show some of the classics come from. there was one show where jeff said he's scared that one day, a fan will make a compilation of "all the stupid shit i say between songs"

off the top of my head,

the constipation on jay leno show story (june 99)

    audience smoking pot (jan 03)

people thinking jeff is a commie (jan 03)

    cock (feb/mar 01)

there was a story about a promoter in germany (jun 02)

comparing grateful dead fans to wilco fans rant (25 feb 01)

fucking up the lyrics to At my window sad and lonely (oct 99)

forgot what show, but jeff said he doesnt like seeing the same faces in the front row every night cause even though he's touring, it makes him feel like he hasnt gone anywhere

Okay can we address the First Avenue show on 11/6/05?! That is the one where he talks about the people in the first row "not counting" anymore, they are just a "security blanket", but after thousands of shows Jeff starts wondering how he can continue to "please" them. I was standing right behind these people and it was hysterical and ridiculous all at the same time. Also he made comments about himself being a megalomaniac, and visiting the Mall of AmericaS, plural, international theme. Maybe you had to be there, and be from Minnesota, but it was damn funny. -annie

  3. But I do know that What Light makes me really really happy every time I play it :music .

I don't think I could trust Tweedy anymore than I do. I agree the lyrics are certainly different, but I refuse to underestimate Tweedy. I think he knows exactly what he's doing. He knows how to write a song that leaves us struggling for its meaning, he's been there, and we've seen it and loved it. But now he is just streching his other songwriting muscles, trying something new and maybe more tangible. And I completely agree that everytime I listen to What Light, I can't seem to stop smiling. So if his songs can achieve that feeling even by writing straightforward lyrics, then just add that to Tweedy's ever-growing list of talents.
