  1. Bought this a couple weeks ago. GREAT record. Can't stop listening.

Has a jangly sound that reminds me of early R.E.M. The female singer's voice is pretty amazing. I'm married, but listening to "Marry Me Archie" almost makes me wish I was Archie.

There's nothing I want to skip over. It's 33 minutes of indie pop/rock bliss.

Couldn't agree more. One of my fave records of the year.

  2. I moved to the city from Canada about three weeks ago to begin an MFA at The New School, and unfortunately buying tickets was not high enough on my to-do list before I left. If anyone has a ticket or two to spare for either Thursday or Friday's shows, I would be so grateful! I live in Park Slope, but can meet anywhere to make the exchange.

    Thanks!

    Hal

  3. You know, I've been pretty skeptical of this "rootsy Decemberists album" all along -- on the surface, it seemed like a kind of forced U-turn based on criticism of their recent proggy stuff -- but after listening five or six times, I'm ready to say The King is Dead is my favourite thing they've done since Castaways. I'm still not familiar enough with it to have favourite songs or particular highlights, but the album as a whole plays really, really well, and Gillian's vocals complement Meloy's surprisingly well.

  4. Based on 2 songs and 1 minute of music this is going to be good. Wilco had the misfortune to follow them at Sasquatch in 2005 just after they were breaking out.

Agreed. I was there and Wilco were good, but hearing "Wake Up" at the Gorge was seriously life-changing.

  5. When I moved to NYC in 1986 my uncle (who had lived there for most of the 1960s and 1970s) gave me one piece of advice: don't make eye contact with anyone. I didn't really follow his advice ...

So is that a do or don't? Nobody seems to look at me here in Paris, and I find that weird as hell.

  6. Great season, playoffs, love watching the Canucks....Hopefully they keep Kesler.

They signed him to a big extension this season, so he's a Canuck for a good long while.

As hard as that series was to watch, and as bad as I think they need toughness up front and more discipline on the back end, I do really like the nucleus Mike Gillis has secured in Vancouver. The Sedins, Kesler, Burrows and Samuelsson are all signed with good cap hits for the next several years; Raymond, Hodgson, Grabner and Schroeder provide more young scoring talent than Vancouver has had in a long time; Edler and Ehrhoff are a pair of defensemen I really like; and as disappointing as Luongo has been all season, I'm still extremely happy to have him on the lifetime contract he just signed.

I do think serious thought needs to be given to taking Roberto's captaincy away, and it'd be ideal if he just gave it away himself. He has too many mental demons to overcome already, without the pressure of being the league's only goaltender captain. I really hope Kesler wears the C next season.

The defense is definitely the biggest area to address in the offseason. Mitchell looks to be on his way out, Salo is declining, and Bieksa has been absolutely awful for too long now.
