  1. it may just be amplifier buzz

nels plays guitars with single coil pickups, which tend to pick up interference quite easily (as well as generating an audible hum on their own)

also, there's a wurlitzer in the track, and those are known to crackle and pop and hiss quite often

  2. He does play martins...he plays that D20-12, the 0-18, also seen with a 00-18 pre-war sunburst (in shows and on the sunken treasure dvd), and what seems to be a 00-18 that's natural top (what he rehearses backstage with during I am trying to break your heart..); the martin on the cover of guitar world acoustic is actually nels' martin 00-17 that he's talked about in interviews. He hasn't really been using his gibsons lately!! (and he's only used the J45 and, rarely, a hummingbird, live). AND, the santa cruz's and the new breedlove are really modeled after pre-war martins. So, actually, it seems like he really has a soft spot for martin guitars!!

  3. I honestly just cannot connect with these songs

it seems like wilco lost their depth

i don't think they're bad, but when i listen to you are my face, i think, "this is pretty good." When I put on muzzle of bees, panthers, or i am trying to break your heart, i think "wow, now this is beautiful." These new songs are just pleasant songs, to me. And god, that damn organ, and the intermittent farting nels solos make me cringe.

And i do agree with all the criticisms of walken.

The one thing i absolutely adore about the new songs is how the instruments sound, and the warm and "in your ear" production - just the sound of the piano and the guitars. And jeff's voice really does sound great now.

  4. i know for a fact that jeff uses d'addario phosphor bronze mediums (13's) on all his guitars, except the 0 and 00 martins. But then again, the J45 he uses is a very dark and warm-sounding guitar because of its body shape and the mahogany back, so it also depends not only on how expensive your guitar is, but what its shape and tonewoods are.

  5. I was almost tackled by a gargantuan security guard when i tossed my band's cd to jeff tweedy (who approvingly smiled). They surely overdid it with the jumpers (though i was thankful for the fact that they were there when those who loudly disapproved of Gustafer Yellowgold were thrown out).
