  1. Some of the albums folks are mentioning in this thread are streaming over at AOL's Spinner website (a favorite of mine).

I'm giving the National another shot right now, and I'm actually really liking it. I use to have a problem with the singer's voice, but not now. I don't know what changed about me (because obviously nothing changed about his voice). I may have to pick this one up, even if I'm a little late to the show.

  2. I've particularly liked the following new ones this year (in almost alphabetical order):

    Against Me! - White Crosses

Best Coast - Crazy for You

    DBT - The Big To-Do

    Guster - Easy Wonderful

    Gaslight Anthem - American Slang

    The New Pornographers - Together

Rogue Wave - Permalight (I really love this one more and more every time I listen to it.)

    Vampire Weekend - Contra

On the "Why does Rivers Cuomo hate me? (because it must be personal)" list would be "Hurley." Weezer continues to test the patience of their fans, and I keep going out and buying the records. I could stop buying them, but then I wouldn't have so much to bitch about! :)

  3. Ooh, how is this? I absolutely loved New Wave. Looking forward to checking this out.

I love it. I don't have New Wave (well, I have the Ben Lee version, but not the original, so that doesn't really count), but I did like it. I think this one is really great, too. I got it at the same time I got the new Gaslight Anthem CD, and they sound a lot alike to me, but I think I like the Against Me! record better. (If they have to be compared.) Both are pretty wonderful though.

  4. Spinner.com has the newest album from Against Me! up...

I'm aware of this band, but not a huge follower. I seem to remember when the last one came out (and Ben Lee covered it), their "old school" fans were upset about their less punk sound. I wonder what they think about the new one, called White Crosses, because it isn't nearly as heavy as the last one (called New Wave, I think).

I like the new one. It has a bit of a Gaslight Anthem feel to me.

  5. this dude just keeps puttin em out. i enjoy his stuff, but somehow forget about him until a new one comes out. feels like "gossip in the grain" just came out.

Agreed. I heard "You Are the Best Thing" on the beach the other day and thought, oh yeah! I remember that guy!

I love the title of the new one.

  6. ditto. i like it WAY more than Challengers. might actually be my 3rd favorite behind Electric Version and Mass Romantic.

Challengers really grew on me since its release and now I really dig it. I took it out of my stereo today to put "Together" in, and I do love the more uptempo feel of the new album. All the New Pornographers' children are above average in my book.

  7. i found a leak today of his new record "all the days are nights: songs for lulu" on google today!

    :ninja

so good! the song "when i most wink" is amazing. he's got a voice like no other.

So I'm listening to the clips on his website. Is the whole thing just him and a piano? I think I'd like that in small doses, but I'm not sure how I'll like a whole album that is so bare (if anything Rufus sings on could be called "bare" with a voice like his).

  8. Gaslight Anthem...I had never heard of them until recently and after listening to half of a song I was ready to dismiss them as a bar band doing Springsteen covers but I am glad I persisted and gave them a chance. They have some infectious tunes and pretty good lyrics...they're good at what they do and it's oddly refreshing to hear some straight ahead rock.

If you get the chance, go see them live. It's a rock show.

  9. 1. First Concert, when?

Lenny Kravitz with opener Blind Melon, 1993-ish

    2. First Concert you really wanted to go to and did?

    Probably that Kravitz/Blind Melon show

    3. Favorite Band?

    The Drive-By Truckers

    4. How Many Times have you seen them?

I've seen the full band probably 8 times or so. We've caught solo Patterson, solo Jason, and Jason with the 400 unit probably 6 more times

    5. Worst concert you attended?

Dar Williams several times. I've actually really enjoyed several of her shows. A 930 Club concert stood out where she opened with her slow, boring cover of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb." On a positive note, most of the crowd was short lesbians, so I could see everything on stage well, had no line in the men's bathroom, and it was always easy to get to the bar. Seeing her at a sit-down place in Alexandria, VA nearly put me to sleep.

    6. Favorite?

Like others I'll pick more than one...DBT when Patterson was sick, so it was an almost all Cooley affair. First DBT concert was a revelation. Seeing the Who for the first time (at a festival in Baltimore) was amazing, and I'm not even that big of a fan. Ben Lee with Har Mar Superstar was a blast, mostly because of Har Mar.

    7. Band you have seen the most?

    emmet swimming (local Virginia band)

    8. How many times?

    At least 15-20 times

    9. Furthest you drove for a concert? How far?

Hmm, not too far I don't think. I've been to Baltimore (from northern Virginia) for some shows and Richmond for another (but that was only from Charlottesville). Luckily most acts come through the Washington DC metro area, so we never have to drive too far to see bands we love.

    10. Furthest locale from home you have seen a concert?

Jazz Fest in New Orleans last year

    11. How many concerts have you seen?

It has to be around 100, but maybe not too many more than that.

    12. most you ever paid for a concert ticket?

Spent $125 or so to see Paul McCartney three or four years ago. I don't like to spend too much. If they aren't playing at the 930 Club for less than $40, I'm apt not to go. I'm set in my ways.

    13. Least amount of people at a concert by a major labeled artist.

This probably shouldn't count, but I saw David Gray at an old club called Trax in Charlottesville in 2000 or so. He had been signed to Dave Matthews' label at that point, but hadn't really hit it big yet. There were maybe 50 people there, including Dave Matthews.

    14. Band you want to see the most who you haven't seen?

Right now I'd actually love to see the Killers. My taste in music has certainly broadened recently, and I imagine they put on a great show. I'd also love to see the Flaming Lips.

    15. Ever been backstage, on a tourbus..which?

Sadly, no. I don't think I'd know what to do if I ever did get backstage. I'd probably just be awkward.

    16. Longest show by one artist you ever saw?

    ~ 3 hours from DBT

    17. Shortest show by a headliner?

I saw Weezer on their Green Album tour and they played for probably 50 minutes. It kind of sucked. I haven't seen them since then and don't plan to any time soon.

  10. Has anybody mentioned the new Rufus Wainwright record that comes out in April? I think it's called something like "Songs For Lulu" or something of that nature.

Thanks for the reminder. I had forgotten he had a new one coming out. He is pretty fantastic.
