Thought it would be interesting to limit the thinking to only 2 albums and see what people come up with. Here's mine. Thoughts?
2000's
-Black Rebel Motorcyle Club - Howl
-Wilco-Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
90's
-Son Volt-Trace
-The Black Crowes-Amorica
80's
-Prince & The Revolution-Purple Rain
-Paul Simon-Graceland
70's
-The Rolling Stones-Exile On Main Street (best album of all time IMO)
-The Clash-London Calling
60's
-Bob Dylan-Blonde On Blonde
-The Beatles-Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band
How's that for a fine evening of listening pleasure???

AFter downloading the 2 tracks they have on their website and then previewing the whole album on Itunes I am decidedly underwhelmed. I was really looking forward to this album after stumbling on their first one a year or so ago. Think I'll wait until I can find a used copy somwhere though.

I haven't read throught the entire thread, but I've skimmed throuh several pages and haven't seen the best song ever, which is quite obviously ....
Brown Eyed Girl
Reminds you how great it is to be in the company of the woman you love who loves you back. Nothing better in this life.

I wan't a huge fan of Ms. Lynn's before I picked this up. I mostly got it because of the good buzz it was getting pre-release and because of Jack White's involvement. I immediately fell in love with the record once I got it. Her voice is one of a kind and is still so strong for a woman at her age.
Its just a very good country music album. When I say country music, I mean COUNTRY music, not the sugar-coated pop garbage that gets played on your average coutnry radio station today.
Very down to earth lyrics. Nothing earth-shattering or high-concept, but they come across as very honest and that is kind of refreshing to me these days.
Some bluesy influence on a couple of tracks, both in the instrumentation, as well as her vocal delivery. If you are a fan of UT's or early Wilco, I think you will really enjoy this album. I recommend it very highly.

I'm driving down from KC and am very excited about seeing my favorite band in my hometown in the building where my high school prom was held.

picked this up yesterday.Fantastic live performance.
When I heard this was coming out a couple of months ago, I didn't realize that it was going to be the same set as what was filmed for the High-Def special on HDNET a while back. I saw that show and liked the set a lot. Great surprise when I get the CD and find out it is the same set! Some highlights:
-the all acoustic mini-set towards the end of the show featuring She Talks To Angels and the freaking unbeatable trio of Amorica tunes - Cursed Diamond, Wiser Time, and Nonfiction. Awfully awfully good.
-the inclusion of female backup vocalists on the Southern Harmony tunes. One of the disappointments I've had seeing the Crowes live over the years is Rich and the band handling these vocals on these particular songs. Completely changes the sound from what is on the album. Sometimes that can be a good thing, but in this case the songs sounded a bit hollow. They sound great on this disc.
-the Willie Dixon cover "Mellow Down Easy". I recorded (on cassette tape off of the radio) a benefit concert the band did after the OK City bombing and they did this song. One of their best covers. Great to see it done here and done so well.
-"Seeing Things" from 'Money Maker. One of my favorite songs on that album and one that I don't think I've ever seen them play live.
-extended jam on My Morning Song. This will get you up and moving unless you are dead. Full horn section backing things up here and elsewhere througout the set.
In short this is the best live album I've heard in a long, long time. Much better than Kicking TV IMO. If you even like the band a little bit, or just appreciate great live music, this is a must have.

Interesting that you would include a Portishead record in a hip hop list. Obvious hip hop influence in terms of the instrumentation. I guess I just never considered it to be hip hop since the lyrics are sung instead of spoken. Actully, I don't know what I'd call it. Dummy is a phenomenal record at any rate.
Okay, I'll give it a shot..

I'm by passing San Antonio which is about 100 miles closer to me for the Wichita gig because of venues. I have talked with other tapers who said Sunset Station is the single worst venue they have attended because of it's metal roof and close proximity to a operating rail road track.
The tape will tell the true quality of the Cotillion as a venue.
cool. I hope it works well for you.

http://www.thecotillion.com/information/general.html
The Cotillion is a special events facility in Wichita, KS that features concerts and dances by nationally known performers on a regular basis. Built in 1960, The Cotillion is a 28,500 square foot building with a maximum concert capacity of 2000 persons. The unique circular design of the building has large wooden beams supporting a 24 foot high domed ceiling over an 11,000 square foot floating hardwood maple dance floor and a stage that features a distinctive neon lit band shell. The Cotillion (11120 W Kellogg) is located at 111th west and Kellogg which is 2 1/2 miles west of Mid-Contient Airport (note: Highway 54 / 400 is referred to locally as Kellogg street.) Tickets to events are available in advance at all area Select-a-Seat locations, by telephone, and on the internet.
maybe the wood floor IS stiill there. In any case the place is not horrible by any means, just not as nice as that pictue would make it seem. I'll be there for sure for my fourth Wilco show.

I've probably got somewhere in the neighborhood of 10% rap of all the albums in my collection. Most of my stuff is 80's or 90's and is mostly made up of the big names of that time:
PE
Ice Cube
Run DMC
A Tribe Called Quest
Beastie Boys
EPMD
De La Soul
NWA
Dre's Chronic (after which I lost interest since he's tried to release this same album over again)
Snoop's first album
As for contemporaries, I haven't gotten into them as much but there are a few out there who are worth listening to:
The Roots (these guys are the best thing going in hip hop today IMO)
Jurassic 5 (just now got into them in the past month with their Power in Numbers disc. Great old school sound. I'll have to check out their new one)
Kanye West (has become sort of a media darling I know, but the guy actually writes decent lyrics)
Blackalicious
I think it's interesting the amount of people in this thread who are dismissing the genre because of the mainstream stuff they hear. Rap is no different from rock in that the mainstream stuff that is played today on the radio, or television is by and large absolute garbage. You have to dig deeper to find the good stuff just like any other form of music.

never had a reason to go to wichita before, guess i do now.
that cotillion place looks pretty damn swank. should be pretty kewl.
Well Chango I don't want to damper your excitement and I certainly hope you go ahead and hit the Wichita show, but that picture of the Cotillion must be from the night the place opened. I'm from Wichita. My high school prom was held at the Cotillion. It doesn't look anywhere near that good anymore, and I definitely would not call it "swanky". It's been awhle since I've been there myself, but those chandeliers are not there anymore, and I don't think the floor is wooden anymore - been replaced with concrete.
Still, it's not very big, so it should be a nice little intimate show. I'm making the drive down from KC for it, and I'm very excited about seeing one of my favorite bands in my hometown. Never thought I'd get the chance.

I'm not huge into them but I do have Bakesale and Harmacy and enjoy both of them. I'd recommend either one of those records.
Why the hate for Pavement BrianJeremy?

This plus the news a couple of weeks back about the Crowes releasing the Taller sessions have made my summer.
Greatest greatest hits or compilation
in Someone Else's Song

Love both the Al Green and Sam Cooke discs. Those are good nominations
I would have to say Bob Marley's Legend though is head and shoulders above all compilations.
