  1. Kind of a lazy, thrown-together piece, but nice to see them getting the pub.

A couple quibbles: Maybe they don't mention winning the Grammy for AGIB because it doesn't fit with the "they just might make it now!" narrative.

Also, my understanding is the Tweedy fam lives in Chicago proper, not the 'burbs as indicated.

  2. The shorter people are waiting just as long as the tall people, though, and it's often just a matter of how people rush in after the gate that determines who is directly in front of you. Lots of people cut ahead in the GA area regardless of how early they got there. I don't think I've ever seen a tall guy who didn't cut or push ahead of other people in order to stake out his spot, and this usually pisses people off more than the simple fact that he's tall to begin with.

Yeah, tall people are total rude jerk line cutters. That makes sense.

    Ridiculous.

  3. The hate of I'll Fight, which I think is one of the catchier tunes on the album (though not my favorite all-time Wilco song), I'll never understand. Damn good song. Solitaire is the only one on the new album that I fast forward through at this point.

I'll never get the dislike of I'll Fight.

  4. Bah. Sad, sad stuff. It feels compounded in that he never seemed to find his place in the universe after departing from Wilco, but maybe that's just a Wilco-fan-centric point of view. Love him or hate him, he was a driving force between a lot of beautiful music in the band for a good stretch.

  5. Ok, pardon me here if I'm being dense, but when I insert the dvd and click the extras link, it asks me to register for the bonus content. I filled out the registration, but still find no place to do the download. Then, when I log in, still nothing.

What am I doing wrong here or are the downloadables not up yet?

  6. They might have...

Last night 2/3 of Wilco was at the Hungry Brain. It is not unusual to see Wilco members at clubs in Chicago (or on the street or other places.) Most of them live here and enjoy seeing their musical colleagues perform. I won't say it still isn't sort of a thrill to run into them and talk to them when possible, but really it isn't such a big deal that they are out in public.

1/3 were playing. Who were the 1/3 in attendance?

  7. What do you think the odds are that they had an advance copy of the ruling to use in preparing their suit. It's not unheard of as we have gotten advance rulings ahead of our opponants some times and sometimes they have the advance rulign and use them to prepare arguments in cases similar to ours.

The chances are 0 they had an advance copy, but they certainly already had their complaint drafted (and likely multiple versions depending on different contingencies) for some time. There were only so many was the SCOTUS could go, so it was fairly predictable that 1 of 2 outcomes would result. Also, they would have had access to the briefs and transcripts of the oral argument, so unless the court brought up issues on their own outside the record, they knew where the decision would turn.

  8. Yup that's correct. I'm pretty sure I am going to go the Mac Mini with an external route. So one more question: anyone know about Firewire 400 capable external drives? I'm thinking about the Seagate Free Agent Pro 500GB.

I don't have any experience with Seagate drives. Have you tried CNET or other review sites? Some drives are much more durable than others, it seems.

I have LaCie drives that I've had success with over the years.

  9. Yeah, I'm thinking desktop, not laptop simply for the lower price and the ease of expansion. I have a laptop for work, so if I need portability, I've got it. The Mac Mini doesn't seem to offer that expansion, so I think that is probably out. I dunno, maybe I will build a PC. While I hear that for media the Mac is a much more stable machine, the price for a Mac Pro (which I think I would need if I want expandibility) is WAY more than I want to spend.

I switched in 2001 and I will never, ever, ever, ever, ever go back. I don't want to start a Mac/PC flamewar, but for my purposes at least, you can pry my Mac(s) from my cold, dead hands.

If I were in your situation, I would just buy a Mac Mini with a couple of large external hard drives. Unless you do a lot of graphic intensive stuff (gaming, serious video editing, etc.), it sounds like a Mac Pro would be overkill both in terms of capability and price. The Mac Pro, as its name suggests, is really a professional media person's machine. The Mac Mini is plenty for general email/web/Garageband/home movies, etc. The Mac Mini will also interface nicely with your HDTV (otherwise I'd suggest an iMac which is great bang for your buck). With the gobs of money you save from going from a Mac Pro to a Mac Mini, you can easily afford a couple of terabytes of external storage.

I assume the reason you need significant storage space is a big music or video library. If that's so, there's no reason it can't be on external drives rather than internal ones.

    Anyway, that's how I'd go.
