  1. Thats a great blog.

But I would like to point out to Earl that he's wrong about Harry killing Voldemort.

It was actually Dumbledore's phoenix Fawkes, who was hiding in the shadows while Harry and Ron were in the abandoned girls bathroom while getting dating advice from Moaning Myrtle

  2. :lol

Look, I'm on the other side of this one, but if you can't tell the difference between a band selling a t-shirt or a tote bag with their logo on it, and a band licensing its music to a corporation that has no other tie to the band than the pile of money they paid for the right to use the song in a commercial, then I'm not sure I can help you understand.

    Sure there is a difference.

But I dont think its as big as some might make it out to be.

A band puts a logo on a product in order to advertise itself. Same thing as selling the rights to a song. And if someone in the band believed that it was going to be used to sell something objectionable (without getting into the whole Nazi, WWII Hitler thing) I'm pretty sure the rights would not have been released

  3. To give you an honest opinion and not a sardonic rebuttal on this post:

I think that maybe people who are addicted to being into things that no one else really knows about feel like they have some authority over the majority because they know something you don't. If you notice, they'll try to push their favorite bands on you, but then feel cheated if that band shows up on a popular movie/TV commercial/popular TV show.

The reason for this, I believe, is:

    1. they feel that they have to fight to prove their genuineness as a fan. Like when people say "I've been a fan of this band since blah blah blah." and you're thinking yeah... right

    or

    2. Someone they don't like might become a fan of this band putting them on the same level in a way. Like... what if J-Lo announced that she was a huge Wilco fan? Would you feel a little dirty? Or maybe kind of irritated that she probably just doesn't get it?

I'm not claiming to be an expert... these are just theories. Personally, I hope Wilco gets all the attention they deserve and they're still going to be my favorite no matter what because I can't think of a single Wilco song that doesn't make me feel good when I hear it.

This is, and has been my point all along

    Thank You

  4. yeah - but thats nonsense, in that the whole point of a band in 2007 is to sell records/concerts/t-shirts/etc.etc.

Sure, the artist enjoys his/her work - but do you really think that Wilco would exist if it made no money, if it was a bunch of guys in a garage fiddling around?

  5. I think you might've meant to start a thread? This is a whole other thing.

    Not really.

They way I see it, and I'm not saying I'm right and everyone else is wrong, is that the VW ad and the anger surrounding it is the same as when a band becomes a mainstream act.

Being from Chicago (the greatest city in the world), I may be at a disadvantage when it comes to Wilco though, in that there is a radio presence for Wilco at 'XRT - although not as large as the Talking Heads... I've always seen Wilco, and to a lesser extent UT as the next big thing. I've been waiting basically since Anodyne for them to take off.

So a TV ad is just more proof to me that Wilco is the next big thing. I'm just glad I got to see them way back when it was easier. But if VW helps tune more fans into them - thats great.

  6. I've asked before, and still have not recieved a solid answer.

Why is it that some fans become upset when thier favorite band becomes popular?

I mean really, is it that you just cant stand the fact that you might like something mainstream? You were a big fan of Boy, but once those bastardos sold out and released Rattle and Hum fergeit it. Now every 15 year old kid with a bad case of acne is a U2 Fan. Not you though, you've moved on and "found" Husker Du.

I didnt get it then, and I dont get it now

  7. You know.... You would think that the "special collection" would have been available to the folks who pre-ordered off of the bands website - even if it was through Music Today or Music Now or whatever the hell it is..

  8. But is it a bad thing when a band becomes more popular? Why does it seem that some fans bemoan the fact their favorite band is no longer seen in a 150 person bar because they can now fill a much larger arena? I don't quite understand this "logic".

  9. As you can see, I never really post, but I visit rather frequently. The more I read about opinions of SBS, the more I question people's true fandom. I've been a fan of the band since BT and with every new album comes the onslaught of negative reviews stating that the band is going off into a bad direction or their importance to today's culture is diminishing. The initial knee-jerk reaction from many of you is full of hate for that reviewer as you go into full defense-mode for Jeff and the band.

My question to you is, "Why do you care so much about what a reviewer for Pitchfork or Paste magazine thinks about a new Wilco album?" Remember the old adage, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"? If you love "Either Way" and some reviewer from Seatlle thinks it is spineless, smooth-jazz crap, who cares? People get so defensive around here if anyone says anything negative towards the band. Like the music because YOU like it, not because you think it is "cool" to be a Wilco fan or because some magazine said that Wilco is the band for hipsters. Everyone is entitled to an opinion and I wonder why many of you take it so personally?

The only people who are entitled to take it personally is the band and I doubt they care half as much as some of you? I am not ripping on anyone here, I just find it weird that fans on this board get sooo hurt by this? I like Wilco because their music envokes feelings inside of ME that make ME feel happy or sad or intrespective. This is what they do for ME; no critic nor chatroom poster is going to change that. Just relax and enjoy the music.

    WOW

my sentiments (almost, I was a UT fan) exactly

  10. PHC is a fine show.

I listen every week, and this week, all the more reason.

As for the whole "Dad-Rock" thing... What's wrong with it? Not everything needs to remain cutting edge all the time.

There is something to be said for comfort

  11. Greatest Wilco album of all time....?

A previous poster hit the nail on the head with the Sophie's Choice analogy. That being said, Being There is a very fine album, and personally, I rank it above both AGIB and YHF. I'm still soaking in SBS, so I cant add that into the mix yet.

  12. How convenient, my first post is now tied to AM.

AM is a fine album, and yes, Trace is as well.

As for it bing the greatest debut of all time......that is completely and totally subjective. Why, one could even make the argument that AM is not a debut at all, but simply a revamping of an existing band line-up with the debut being Being There. Not that I subscribe to this theory.
