  1. via (Chicago's) 93 WXRT facebook page:

JUST ANNOUNCED by Mayor Rahm Emanuel with Lin Brehmer & Mary Dixon‪#‎TasteofChi‬ XRT Concert headliner: Jeff Tweedy of Wilco! 93xrt.com

I'm excited for this. XRT always books some good openers too so I'm curious to see the full lineup for that day. I thought I read this year that some tix will be sold in the $50 range, and some in another price range, but that the lawn will still be free.

Edited to add: the date for this is July 12

  2. Just to follow up -- the Wilco at Summerfest thing was a false alarm. Avett Brothers will be co-headlining with Violent Femmes. Good bill, but I don't know if it's worth it for me to make the trek up from Chicago on a weeknight.

  3. Consequence of Sound lists Wilco as being "official" for Summerfest in Milwaukee. Anyone else heard anything? I suspect we'll see an official performance announcement (or perhaps tour announcement???) soon!

Edit: Just saw this -- http://www.radiomilwaukee.org/music/soundboard/events/wilco-co-headline-violent-femmes-summerfest

Co-headlining with Violent Femmes on June 26?

  4. But really though, so many highlights tonight! Even though there was something I wanted to hear (side note: If I really wanted to year it I should have gotten there earlier) but it would be hard to sub one of the other songs out. Very strong top to bottom.

Jeff also took the time to mention some of the covers that people asked him to play, but I missed a lot of those.

  5. If I recall correctly, outdoor music has gone on past 10:00 at the Hideout. I remember Waco Brothers playing until about 10:30pm at the Bloodshot anniversary, and Ratatat and Hercules & Love Affair went past 10:00p at the Block Party in 2008. So, it's not without the realm of possibility that Iron and Wine goes until 10:30. The 45 minute set time (assuming a 10:00 curfew) seems pretty short for them. I'd still bet Wilco ends at 10:00 though.

Definitely beyond excited for the Block Party this year.

  6. In an incredibly unfortunate turn of events, I got into a car accident en route to the park (about half a mile away, could see people walking to the stadium), so my girlfriend and I ended up missing the show. Luckily everyone involved came out with just cuts, scrapes and bruises, but took precautionary rides to the hospital (The cars didn't make it, and mine is still out in the west suburbs. Seat belts save lives, and strangers are just friends you haven't met...it's all true). From the hospital we got a ride and headed back to the city and got to hear the [quite awesome] encores on XRT.

Very glad a recording has found its way to the interwebs so quickly and thanks to those who posted it! I love Wilco, never miss a Chicago area show, but ya know, sometimes stuff happens. Looking forward to downloading and digesting this and imagining the fireworks.

  7. SO many times during this set I was like "OH MY GOD, I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY PLAYED THAT" and then they just kept finding ways to top the last really awesome thing.

It was largely an acoustic-driven set, with Jeff only using the electric guitar for the new songs (didn't use an electric at all up until Born Alone). John got a HUGE ovation for Just That Simple. This was the first time I heard the full-band-acoustic-arrangement for Spiders, which was amazing. Spiders was my number 2 moment of the night, just cause the Misunderstood second encore was just TOO perfect. Also loved Not For The Season and all the Mermaid Ave cuts in general.

It felt a lot like a Jeff solo show, in that he used the acoustic guitar a lot, there were quite a few deep cuts, and for most of the show the lights weren't overpowering. They didn't bring along the big lighting that they used the first few nights, and instead had a few lamps around the stage. Of course for the new songs (especially Art of Almost) they made great use of the lights that Lincoln Hall just normally has, but most of the show the lights were pretty subdued.

I haven't been seeing Wilco as long as some on the board, but this was definitely my favorite Wilco show. Just, wow.

  8. Pitchfork review is up -- 6.9 with a generally positive review. They probably could've gone anywhere between 6.5 and even 8.0 with the same written review.

    The best thing about
    The Whole Love
, Wilco's adventurous, elliptical eighth LP, is the ease with which they've recaptured some of that old unpredictability: From
    Being There
    through
    A Ghost Is Born
, the band's best work has always perched itself upon the edge of traditionalism and experimentation, and
    The Whole Love
is the first of their albums in years not to shy away from such risks.
    ...
It took Jeff Tweedy years to get comfortable with his place in
    Uncle Tupelo
, and a few more to truly settle into Wilco's first act. After a few years of constant sonic flux and personnel shifts,
    Sky Blue Sky
    and
    Wilco (The Album)
found the band feeling more resolved than ever, a consistent lineup settling into what seemed increasingly like a signature sound. But Wilco's always seemed their most creatively surefooted atop uneven ground. So the weird, winsome
    Whole Love
is certainly Wilco's least consistent LP in a while, but inconsistency has its own rewards. At its best,
    The Whole Love
finds Wilco casting aside the caution, reveling in their own contradictions.

  10. Looks like Autumn Defense added a pre-Wilco tour show at Lincoln Hall in Chicago on Sept 7 (per Chicago Reader Early Warnings page). Pardon me while I speculate as to Wilco (the band)'s plans for the Sept. 9th - 11th weekend [probably chillin' with their families, making sure they packed everything for tour, oh you know, maybe a show somewhere in the city, no big deal, etc]
