  1. I haven't posted on this board in forever, but I love love love this album! I might like Stage Names a bit more, but they are both stellar. But even more exciting is seeing them live in Lawrence tomorrow night! I saw them open up for the Decemberists a few years back and am just thrilled to see them again! (so much so I just punctuated 3/4 sentences with exclamation points...!)

  2. I haven't posted here in a very long time, but I had to make a post to represent my native state of Kansas.

That said, the list isn't terribly impressive.

    Kansas (can't miss that one)

    The Anniversary

    Ad Astra Per Aspra

    The New Amsterdams

Get Up Kids (not really a very good band, but they might be the most well known)

    Split Lip Rayfield

The Gadjits (they use some other name now)

If there are any I am missing, I am interested to know.

Oh, and for those of you who live in Georgia: You have to include nearly the whole of the Elephant 6 Collective, they were based out of Athens.

  3. I'll keep it to a trim 10.

    10. Modest Mouse- We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank

    9. Daft Punk- Alive 2007

    8. Sunset Rubdown- Random Spirit Lover

    7. Wilco- Sky Blue sky

    6. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah- Some Loud Thunder (I almost thought this was a 2006 release, but it squeaks in on January 29th)

    5. Deerhunter- Cryptograms (Another January 29th release!)

    4. Radiohead- In Rainbows

    3. Le Loup- The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations' Millennium General Assembly (despite the obnoxiously long album title)

    2. Animal Collective- Strawberry Jam

    1. Panda Bear- Person Pitch (This would be #1 on a list of the last 5 years)

Obviously, I listened to alot of Animal Collective this year, I couldn't help it I just became addicted to them.

As for HM: Beirut, Efterklang, Iron and Wine, White Rabbits, Do Make Say Think, Andrew Bird, Akron/Family and Kanye.

  4. I just got Burial's new album, "Untrue", which is a dubstep album, its pretty relaxed and pretty good (I've only given it a few spins though). I also enjoyed The Field's "From Here We Go Sublime" that came out earlier this year. And the new Daft Punk cd is pretty stellar as well, it's got alot of energy and would probably be enjoyed by a 14 year old. I don't know how much a 14 year old would really enjoy the new Black Dice...but I may just be making assumptions based on my own taste in music at 14 (yuck).

Edit: I didn't see that virtualreason bought the albums already. I need to read more carefully.

  5. And, for the person that stated that it's hard to "sing a long" to Bird's performances? Good. There is nothing more annoying than ppl that sing along to performances. Just a "head's up". We don't pay 30 bucks to hear you sing. Yeah, there's times to sing a lyric or two duiring Wilco shows, but singing along to a song so that you are trying to impress everyone around you is borderline criminal in my book.

I'm not talking about belting it out at the top of my lungs for an entire show, but I like singing along to myself from time to time. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, I don't sing loud enough for anyone around to hear me in a loud concert, let alone annoy anyone. I am also paying 30 dollars, and if it helps me enjoy the show a little more, than I think I am entitled to sing along at reasonable volume. It helps me enjoy a connection to songs I love. Furthermore, I'm not trying to impress anyone around me, I don't need to do that. All I was saying is that Andrew's songs undergo dramatic structural shifts when performed live.

I will say this however, and this is about concerts in general, not specifically Wilco shows, but a lot of "indie" shows, people don't respond to the music at all, and that annoys me. For as soulful and catchy and dance-worthy as a lot of bands are, and for as devoted as a lot of fans are, I see a ton of people who just stand stiff at shows, barely even nodding their heads. I don't think there is anything wrong with showing more enthusiasm than most people do, as long as it's done respectfully. I would be annoyed if I was playing my music with all my heart to a bunch of people who weren't reciprocating at all. It's a rock concert, not the opera. Rock and roll is supposed to be fun.

  6. Excellent show. A lot of energy. I went with my older sister and some of her friends, who were really really digging on the AM and Being There songs. Fireworks during Spiders could not be any more perfect.

I can't believe that no one has mentioned Andrew Bird. I love how his shows sound so different every time. It's near impossible to sing along with him though. I met him after the show too. I liked Tweedy's crack "I taught Andrew Bird everything he knows...".

  7. I will second (or third, or fourth) that it was a really amazing show. The 2nd encore was freaking amazing, and Spiders was a great way to close out the set. Nels is scary good a guitar...I'm just scared about standing too close to him while he plays...he will melt your face right off. That was my 6th Wilco show (I can't count them on one hand anymore! And they are officially the band I have seen more than any other) and they just continue to bring the rock. I really liked Jeff's line about "Now that we have you guys dancing and enjoying yourself, we are going to play a really depressing ballad...that just Wilco's M.O." (paraphrased). I really enjoyed Dr. Dog's set as well...I had just been introduced to them about 4 or 5 months ago and they played a great live set.

This just makes me more excited for the upcoming Kansas City show at the crossroads...it will be nice to have them in so close and not have to put in all the travel time. I assume some other people who went to Columbia will be making the trip to KC as well. Can't wait for the 7th show of my Wilco career.

  8. I just comitted to going to the show in Columbia earlier tonight, without knowing Dr. Dog would be opening. Should be a really great show, as I've been digging on Dr. Dog's newest album over the past few weeks. Very excited now.

  9. I really like "Retrieval of You", but overall, the album just never really clicked for me. I had kind of forgotten about it in all honesty, maybe I'll give it another chance.

  10. This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About

    The Lonesome Crowded West

    The Moon & Antarctica

Good News for People Who Love Bad News

We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank

I would say this is up for debate, as Good News isn't STELLAR...but it's pretty good overall. After ten pages, I'm kind of scraping the bottom of the barrel.

  11. Stay out of my beach community, lebowski!

Mr. Treenhorn draws a lot of water in Malibu...you don't draw shit Lebowski!

When I read that he thought he "owned Malibu", that scene was the first thing to come to mind.
