  1. In Austin, South Austin Music (www.southaustinmusic.com) on South Lamar is a great shop w/ helpful and knowledgeable staff, plus more new and used gear than you can shake a pick at. (And I know Tweedy's stopped in there at least once.) Nearby are also Heart of Texas Music and another great little shop w/ tons of vintage equipment (can't think of the name of it, but it and HoT are both in the same shopping center, near the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar).

Up north is Guitar Resurrection (http://guitarrez.com/), with perhaps a slightly smaller selection, but still a cool place.

    Those are my faves, anyway.

  2. Food-wise, it's hard to go wrong with Chuy's, Trudy's, Guero's, Threadgill's, Hill's Cafe, Stubb's or Iron Works (though it seems like you've got the last two covered -- bbq -- with the Salt Lick). I know I've left a ton of great stuff out; if there's a kind of food you're hankering for, say the word and I'll give you my read.

For entertainment, the Continental Club, Ginny's Little Longhorn (more ambience than musical draws, typically), and South Congress (which is actually where the Continental Club is) are hard to beat. Avoid 6th St. unless you're into the college-age bar/dancing scene; the 4th St. area/Warehouse District can be fun, but it's increasingly crowded and yuppified.

As time allows, grab a movie (along with a good meal and beer/wine) at one of the Alamo Drafthouse locations.

    Enjoy Austin!

  3. Can't really compete with any of those, but I once had wine made from tomatoes. I believe it was about 30 years old and tasted like the inside of someone's stomach. (Or at least what I surmise the inside of a stomach would taste like.)

    3 for 6? Impressive...in a way.

  4. thanks for the messages, everybody. i see lots of familiar sentiments and experiences.

also, forgot to mention our daughter (almost 5)...which clearly makes things tougher. but she's great and means the world to me, so in that respect i'm so happy and lucky to have her around.

i'll stick around (was away for awhile b/c my bookmark had an outdated link, and i'm a dummy)...hopefully not to be made fun of too much. :) though if so, well, i can dish it out too.

haven't heard all the new songs, but from most accounts they seem to be "happy." why'd tweedy have to do that now? i may not be able to relate to this next album at all! :)

  5. So, hopefully not being too personal, but is anyone here divorced (well of course some folks here are) or divorcing? I'm going through a real mess right now; looks as though I'll be divorcing my wife of (barely) 7 years someday...someday soon. Was blindsided with it at the very end of last year; we've been separated for ~3 months and it appears all the wheels are now coming off. (I'm a wheel, by the way; though she's the one who turned on me...)

So I'm just trying to deal with it all and looking for help/guidance/inspiration/whatever anywhere I can get it. If anyone is willing to contribute anything helpful -- or is in a similar situation -- I'd be interested to hear it.

Misery loves company (in my back), as they say.
