  1.

Also, someone mentioned an American mindset- How are the crowds in other countries, like places in Europe?

I'm envious of the European crowds of 60's - 70's jazz & rock concerts (especially Miles, Coltrane & Pink Floyd). They were attentive during the music and appropriately enthusiastic when the tune ended. Hey, you never know, it could happen here. It's all a dream we dreamed, one afternoon.....

  2. all the chatter, but now it drives me to distraction every time.... to combat this effectively for me is to have a good seat, up close, where Nels or one of the guys can blast me into a solitary state. I've never been a snob about where I sit or stand, but with Wilco I just won't risk it anymore. If I don't nab great seats, If we can't get a good spot, I just can't go.

All of this is to say, we'll be at the Orpheum in Boston next week, and we'll be up close getting our f'n ears blasted!

Wow, wishing you a good nite out. This was my frame of mind when I stopped seeing the Dead, Bromberg, John Prine, Mozart (wait a sec, I'm not that old). Then later, going to shows at coffeehouse, church, basement, living room scene was driving me nutso with can't-sit-still, can't-shut-up, forgot-to-turn-off-the-phonies.

Rather than getting all anxious for seeing Wilco soon, its a comment like yours that has me a bit more settled. If long-time-listeners are saying the scene is wacky and borderline obnoxious, then I can forget about getting all perturbed by it. Rather, I'll see and hear what happens, and what ever sticks will be it's own experience.

  3. I'm talking about the chatty cathys. Bam Bam the photographist. Lou Lou the tweeter. Sammy Wayfarer the texter. Claude the drunk. Timmy King the frat boy. Susie Q the sorority girl. Gregg Allman. The list is endless.

Great thread, imo, since I'll be at my firstest Wilco show this Friday nite. Having heard AUD's of the last 18-months, one thought about seeing them was that I'd be a misfit in such a chatty crowd. I'd like a good time but all the hooters, yellers, look-at-me uber-chicness of today's attendees is not appealing. But, this behavior has been going on for decades. The dude at Dead shows who did the throat-yelling (ai-ai-ai), folks at Garcia's solo concert with endless-chatter. Who knows what these folks get out of the musical experience.

This is a wide-open topic. They're entertainers, out to please and see the audience respond, and also artists who want to present their output in the right conditions. I plan to be entertained and intrigued by the inter-play.

Am hoping for the best, but am prepared to observe this current music/culture scene with great curiosity (and no picture-video taking or caterwauling:)

  4. Speaking of Montclair, how does one get there from Manhattan via train (or bus)? The Wellmont website suggests no train service on weekends, but NJT suggests there is with a transfer in Newark. Inquiring minds would like to know what you guys think is the best way there. Thanks in advance for your help.

Montclair is on the MidTown Direct commuter line, plus bus service to/from NYC is a well-worn path. With just a bit of searching the NJTransit schedule and the bus services, you should fine what times they're running. It's going home later, on a weekend nite that gets weird with the timing of service. The Pine Street station is the closest in proximity to the theatre, maybe a 4-block radius. Buses prolly stop right at that corner of Bloomfield Ave.

OK, maybe the closest train station is called BAY ST.(not Pine St. even though that's the block it's on:)

  5. Going to the Wellmont in Montclair, NJ to see my 1st Wilco show, (after turning down at least 2-other ticketed invites over the past 18-months.) And hearing every available AUD-recording from the (really good) Summer tour and parts of Europe and Fall swing, I had those same set lists thoughts broached by others.

Last weekend I listened to the 3-22-2010 show and was re-excited all over again. That was a great show and a pretty fine recording. I thought, damn, Hot show, they're really playing well. The mood-tempo-arrangement-(whatever) has changed/tweaked for the better. Like they've boiled down the essence of these tunes to what works and the spots to show some flair. It's got me looking forward to the Wellmont gig.

  6. From postings and reviews, they've been killin' it, each and every show during this Spring/Summer tour. Of all the current Wilco tour AUD's I've checked out, this one sounds the BEST, imo. A real solid field recording that comes across with good presence and sound. Well done. Here's the torrent link. http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=527201
