Looks like if hotels become truly scarce both Brattleboro, VT and Albany, NY are an hour each away. Not ideal, but not the end of the world.
You'll be better served by Bennington, VT first - then Pittsfield, MA
Bennington will be about 1/2 hour away and Pittsfield maybe 40 minutes or so. As you go south of Pittsfield there are lots more options but still, for the reasons I stated before, you'd better book early.

Looks like there are a couple of very nice $175 rooms here along with a few pricier ones.
It's about a 10-15 min drive from the venue but this place is really nice - if it's in your price range I would move quickly on this one. I heard from a friend today that most of the cheaper Williamstown hotels are already sold out.
The only walking distance hotels are Holiday Inn and the Porches - both sold out.

For some reason I was worried that these tickets would sell away quickly seeing that the hotels/motels are booking up fast. Seems like there are still tickets left. This makes me wonder what the capacity of this place is. Did anyone ever figure that out?
I was told by someone in Marketing at MASSMoCA that they are selling "thousands" of tickets. That's a specific as she was willing to get. The facility itself is massive and I"m sure it can hold whatever they throw at it. This part of Masschusetts is called "The Berkshires" and hotel rooms fill up for the summertime well in advance anyway. The popular Williamstown Theatre Festival draws huge crowds during the summer - NOTE: The theater festival will be staging a musical production of Romeo & Juliet based on the music of Jeff Buckley in August - sweet!
The Wilco shows will most likely be held in the green space to the lower left of the picture above. Here's an image of the smaller outdoor stage
MASSMoCA, in addition to being the largest museum of contemporary art in the country, also boasts the largest single gallery space, check this out.
The indoor concert space is a 10,000-square-foot black box theatre with a clear-span 30-foot ceiling, which can accommodate up to 850 seats (note, the Wilco shows will be outside I'm guessing)
If you've never been to MASSMoCA you'll simply be blown away by the place itself.

Tickets at the box office are from the same pool as online tickets so driving there won't help out at all.

I know folks who work in marketing at MASSMoCA. I just wrote an email asking them, in the event of a quick online sellout, can I still drive to the box office and pick up tickets from some "other pool".
I'll let you know if I hear something before 10AM tomorrow.

Interesting. I have a call and an e-mail into someone with the city who was listed as contact info on that page. I'm guessing i'll have an answer by tomorrow. I did speak to the lady today and she wasn't even aware she was listed as the contact person for the camp site. Then she gave me a number to call and it was for the cemetary. lol. I called back and she apologized and gave me another number but it was for the Historic Valley Campground and I left a message there. Though the lady on the phone did say that campground was walking distance if you like a STEEP hike and didn't mention it being closed.
so at this point, I'll see what kind of reply I get.
The park that is closed for camping is Windsor Lake/Historic Valley is basically the same spot but Windsor Lake camping says it's closed and Historic Valley says it's not. They may be two different spots.
Living only 5 miles away, I've never found a reason to camp there. Either way, yes, big steep climb. Cammping within walking distance is gonna be tough. Hoteling within walking distance looks like it's sold out. I dont' know where they are going to park everyone - shuttles mentioned.
Williamstown is a 10 minute drive away so if I were you and I was thinking about a hotel I'd jump on something right away.

I was looking at those but they all seemed a bit far. Why didn't you include the one that's close to MOCA by the lake?
Because I think, and I may be wrong, that's it's closed.

You could walk from Windsor Lake to Mass MOCA, but its a relatively steep downhill from the lake to Church St and then a gradual downhill from Church St to the museum. Coming back, after a show, is going to be a hell of a workout on your calves and hamstrings.
Windsor Lake is a cool spot, i used to have rugby practice there once in a while.
Besides which, there is only one group campsite - and I believe it's closed permanently http://www.mass.gov/dcr/parks/western/wnds.htm

Oh! The Clark Art Institute is sooo nice!
So I haven't decided. Get up early, drive up and get tickets or sweat it out on my computer at home.......Someone tell me what to do!
I've got both options open - the word I have is that they are selling "Thousands" of tickets but I don't know exactly how many. It's also rain or shine so the Wilco shows will be outdoors because they can't hold that many folks inside. They've had an outdoor concert or two in the past that got rained on and they moved it inside - not so with this one.

A few years back a local filmaker produced a documentary about MASSMoCA called "DownsideUp". The premise, can a world class art institution save a fading Northeastern Blue Collar town.

"fine" isn't the way it is described when I googled it. in fact, the reviews are overwhelmingly terrible... check it out:

By "fine" I meant - you're just sleeping there right? Lot's of Berkshires reviews are from people who come to see the paintings at the Clark Art Institute. Their expectations are a bit high.

The Redwood is fine - very basic but yes, the Berkshires in August ain't cheap.

There are quite a few private folks who are happy to drive to/from the areaAlbany. Williams College and MCLA are both here so there's a small cottage industry of drivers.
I'm also thinking that my site might become a bit of a hub for people looking to drive/ride.

The Albany airport is traditionally pretty cheap and easy to deal with. Southwest flies direct. Hartford, CT is next and Manchester, NH and Burlington, VT are big stretches.
Albany = 1 Hour, Hartford = 2 Hours, Manchester/Burlington = 3 Hours.
If you're flying from the west coast and you want ultra cheap you could even fly to Boston or NYC and consider renting a car? If you discount the time it takes you to get out of the airport each of those cities is around 3.5 hours away.

I'll do my best to answer local questions here as well. Obviously the first concern is places to stay. I would suggest that an acceptable radius includes Pittsfield, MA all the way up to Bennington, VT. Lots of small, non-national chains around but very very few big names.
That said, it's the summertime in the Berkshires so whatever you find you should find it fast. A few quickies in the Williamstown area.
