were those the shows where they were billed as the Warlocks because the Grateful Dead was banned from hampton?

  2. I'm pretty excited about some of the upcoming shows I'm going to. (Some more than others. . .)

March 21--Rufus Wainwright at the Jefferson, Charlottesville

March 30 and 31--both Tweedy solo shows at the Vic!!!

April 18--Drive-By Truckers at the Norva, Norfolk

May 24--St. Vincent at the National, Richmond

Here's one I'd like an opinion from you guys on--Minus the Bear. They're right here in Norfolk at the Norva on Saturday night and tickets are just $20. Worth seeing?

I saw them in chicago a few months ago. they're very talented, show was only about 90 minutes. the crowd is pretty much all hipsters.

for $20 I would definitely check them out

  3. I hardly go to any shows anymore, so my upcoming concert schedule is (for me) absolutely crazy:

March 10: Elton John in Orlando

March 15: Experience Hendrix in Clearwater (Featuring Billy Cox, David Hidalgo & Cesar Rosas Of Los Lobos, Jonny Lang, Robert Randolph, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Dweezil Zappa, Robby Krieger, Eric Johnson, Brad Whitford of Aerosmith, Bootsy Collins, Slide Brothers, Chris Layton Of Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, etc)

April 21: Buddy Guy in Gainesville

May 5: Beach Boys 50th Reunion Tour in Tampa

    May 14: Wilco in Tampa

FYI Radiohead will be in Tampa next wednesday, its the only show of the tour that isnt sold out yet.

If you've never seen them I highly recommend it.

  4. 9/4 was my first ever Dead show.

(I had seen the Jerry Garcia Band earlier that summer.)

I was 8 when Jerry died, so that ship sailed before my time.

But two of my first "jam band" shows were Phil and Friends at Aragon Ballroom, and The Terrapin Station Reunion at Alpine Valley

  5. :lol

the one and only time I've been to Chicago my dad and I were looking for the hotel, and randomly turned the corner on this one street and found ourselves across from the Marina Towers. I sort of flipped out, took a picture, and we moved on. :)

I spent my college summers working on the Architecture Boat Tours on the Chicago River.

We had one tour guide who never failed to mention YHF album cover each time we passed by the towers.

  6. Speaking of 1980...just listened to 9/2 9/3 9/4 and 9/6....very nice run....

they were awesome during that period. Early Brent years, Jerry hadn't fallen off the deep end yet.

I typically stick to '71 through '83 Dead, although there is some great stuff between '87 and '90

  7. All of us Chicagoans will second that one. Weekends and even some week days can get pretty crowded, but it is a wonderful and unique place. Just saw Dave Douglas and his quintet there a couple weeks ago.

And if you are into Wilco nostalgia, feel free to hang out in front of the Riviera for awhile, espeically if it is cold. The Riv is just across the street. Also Check out Shake Rattle and Roll right next door (not open at night) or any of the fine restaurants in the area, particularlly the Vietnamese and Chinese ones down by Argyle Street.

    LouieB

I haven't been to GM in a few months but I typically show up there on weekends around 2am if I dont feel like doing the late night bar scene.

I live in the West Loop now so its kind of a hike for me
