    • U2 in 1983 at The Bronco Bowl (a bowling alley/theater) in Dallas with a 3,000 seat capacity that wasn't even close to sold out.  Bonus that The Alarm opened.  To this day, one of my favorite concerts ever.
    • The Sugarcubes in 1988 at The Roxy in Hollywood for their (and Bjork's) first North American appearance if I remember correctly.
    • The Smashing Pumpkins in 1991 at The Whiskey  A Go Go in Hollywood.  Gish had just come out.  Hole, Courtney Love's pre-Kurt Cobain band opened.  Didn't realize until The Smashing Pumpkins got on stage that I had been talking to James Iha, their guitarist, for much of the Hole set with Billy Corgan standing on the other side of him.  Had no idea who they were at the time
    • Radiohead in 1993 at the Palladium in Hollywood.  Creep was their big song of the day, the really interesting thing is that Radiohead was the OPENING band... PJ Harvey was the headliner
    • Arcade Fire in 2005 at the Danforth Music Hall in Toronto.  Funeral had just been released and they were getting a lot of attention in Canada... luckily I was living in Toronto at the time and got to see them in this small venue... they were very much more theatric earlier in their career, another of my all time favorite shows
  1. Genesis

    Dancing with the Moonlit Knight

    Supper's Ready

    Watcher of the Skies

    Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

    Firth of Fifth

Very nice again.  I really got in to Genesis post-Gabriel and backed into their older stuff, thus some of the "newer" Genesis with Collins...

    One For The Vine

  2. When I was in college, my girlfriend's mother used to refer to Curtains as the "Whoa-ooh-whoa" song. :lol

I feel Captain Fantastic is one of those classic EJ albums that deserves reevaluation. It belongs in the top 5 or even top 3 of all his albums. Elton was at the height of his powers vocally, and his commercial popularity was also at a peak...yet he and Bernie released this deeply personal, downright subversive record! From the biting-the-hands-that-feed-them Bitter Fingers to the almost undisguised sexual declaration of Someone Saved My Life Tonight, this is about as far from pop as you can get without totally abandoning it (although Someone Saved was still a hit). And Curtains is a high water mark for me. Incredible stuff.

Incredible indeed.  I love every one of Elton's albums (up to and even including A Single Man) in so many different ways, but without a doubt, Captain Fantastic is my favorite... and the way We All Fall in Love Sometimes turns into Curtains is just perfection.

  3. Elton John

    Curtains

Billy Bones & the White Bird

Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding

    Sweet Painted Lady

    Skyline Pigeon

Very nice!  Here's my take, though just so many to choose from...

    Elton John

    My Father's Gun

    Indian Sunset

Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding

    Ticking

  4. Not overzealous, just a fan with priorities in sight. Let's be real, they're both listening parties. But one you can listen to in your home for the rest of your life and the other happens the one time coming live from the artists responsible. Maybe that's just me though...

Just wondering with the band in town if they might do an in-person at Amoeba?

  5. Just picked up

Kids These Days - Traphouse Rock

    616vW-QGARL._SL500_AA280_.jpg

Hip-hop album produced by Tweedy and mixed by Mario C (Beastie Boys).

Saw them opening for Raphael Saadiq last year and they impressed me enough to want to check this out. The fact that they are offering the new album as a free download from their website helped push me to get it quicker. Glad that I did. This is one of those few albums that just DEMANDS my attention; no passive listening here. Jazz/soul/hip-hop with all organic instruments.

RIYL: The Roots, Massive Attack, Kanye West

This one cribs a Pixies lead guitar line for the main piano part:

Might be competing for a spot.

Wow... this is just unbelievably good.  On only one listen it's vaulted to the top of my list for the year... maybe for the last several years.  Yes, it's that good.
