  1. Logging in after a long hiatus to say that this is fantastic and that everyone who logs into this message board will probably love it.

I like it all, even the Parquet Courts mashup. Agree with others that the Vile cut is a standout. But honestly they are all solid.

  2. FWIW, I knocked out a few chapters of the audio version read by Jeff this morning, and I loved it. Laughed out loud a few times during intro.

Hearing Jeff read it is the way to go. In a couple of places, his reading affects the meaning of the text. This is true of most good memoirs, of course, but if you’re reading this, you probably already think Jeff’s voice and inflection are the key to why his banter is great.

So far, I would say that anyone who reads this board or has been to SSF will enjoy this very much.

  3. Looks like KEXP will be doing a deep dive on Bowie to celebrate his birthday / death.

It was a year ago this week that KEXP both celebrated the birth and then shockingly, mourned the death of David Bowie at the age of 69. With the help of both those who knew him best and the man himself, KEXP will dig deep into his influential catalog of music spanning nearly 50-years.

Beginning Sunday, January 8th, on what would have been David Bowie’s 70th birthday, and culminating Tuesday, January 10th on the one-year anniversary of his passing, KEXP DJs John Richards, Cheryl Waters, Stevie Zoom, Larry Rose and Evie Cooke will share rare songs, and we’ll hear from those who knew Bowie best, including producers and friends Brian Eno, Tony Visconti and Nile Rodgers, as well as, Robert Smith of the Cure, Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and even the former Thin White Duke himself. Clips from these interviews will be featured on the KEXP Blog, alongside videos, news, and a list of Bowie-related events around Seattle.

“Last year we celebrated 12 hours of Bowie on his birthday and the release of Darkstar. Little did we know he was near death. Days later when we woke up to the terrible news, we turned around and did 12 more hours of nothing but Bowie,” said KEXP Morning Show host John Richards. “There may not be another artist who has influenced and informed every aspect of the KEXP mission than David Bowie. His music has not only influenced nearly every broadcast day that we’ve been on the air, but clearly, his art has propelled so many of the artists we love. Thank you, David Bowie. We miss you every day.”

  6. Is it just me or is this a Tweedy album? I love Sukierae, and I really like this album after a half a dozen listens but this sounds like the second disc to Sukierae much more than a follow up to Star Wars.

I said something similar in the podcast (link above). Debatable. I don't think Tweedy could have made Common Sense or Locator. But they could have made many of the other tracks.

  7. Great Television show! They played most of Marquee - the major exception being See No Evil. Also, they have been playing a track from the 1992 album called 1880 Or So that I highly rec absorbing pre-show. There was also a 14 minute jazz freak out that I had never heard before -- maybe it was Persia? Overall band was tight and Verlaine is still the prickly, idiosyncratic God that made Television great.

And Bob Boulen from NPR was in the house - he is a fan!

  8. Love this album - absolutely love it. The hooks are coming out with each listen, this is one of their best. As other folks have said, I like my Wilco weird and opaque.
