  1. You know, I was thinking: now there are three jolly things: Santa Claus, bankers, and the Green Giant.

Hey, it's been a slow brain day. B)

This is a great example of an artist matching music to lyrics in the most appropriate way. If you don't like the song, what would you have done to make it better? It is easy to tear down what other artists do, but what would you do to make this song better & more appropriate to fit what Woody Guthrie had intended with the lyrics?

    Nice job, Wilco.

  2. I feel this way too.

When a new Beck CD comes out, even if he isn't deviating from some prior type of music he's already done, it's still above most dreck you hear (or insert another artist that was quite acclaimed sometime if Beck is not for you).

I'm streaming Hold Time on NPR - the full stream is still up - and man, I really dig it.

If you took away Matt's voice at times, sonically it reminds me of Summer Teeth and Sea Change; i.e., acoustic guitars combined with synth strings/mellotron sounds, etc.

What's the story on the signed vinyl - who did you buy it through?

I bought this from the Merge website as a pre-order and chose the $0 shipping option. I received my vinyl copy with the signed poster last Saturday. With most pre-orders, I've found that the lowest shipping choice often gets you the items by release date or just a day or two after. Being late isn't usually a problem since many of us have the music before the release date anyway.

  3. :brow Need some sponsoring? what are we talking here?

If you ordered the Hold Time vinyl, you're going to be pretty happy. I just got mine today. Along with the digital download, there was a hand-signed poster and a button. The album art is just beautiful -- it's not the butterfly version but instead, it is the green on green mountain version. Merge did a great job of packaging this.

  4. I like the music and I'm fine with the falsetto and lack of reverb. As others have pointed out, it's the lyrics that I'm having trouble with right now. Some are really, really bad. I remember people having concerns about some of the lyrics on SBS. Many would never forgive Tweedy if he wrote the lyrics on Evil Urges.

  5. IA City is a great town but the Union isn't a good place for a show -- especially if they set up chairs like they did for Ryan Adams. The crowd for RA last night was awful. There wasn't any energy. I had to go to the back of the ballroom just so I could stand up without someone bitching. Also, the sound was really muffled. I listen to music in my living room louder than what was played last night.

I'm going to the Wilco show in IA City on the 10th. Heaven help us if they put out those lame chairs again. That might set Tweedy off.

  6. you'll really show them then.

i like all the new songs, though "What light" is a little maudlin. i'm hoping "Walken" and "Is That The Thanks I Get?" make the new record, keeping my fingers crossed for those two.

With each new record, Jeff has commented that he expects the new record to bring new fans and alienate some old fans but the net result (so far) has been that more jump on than jump off. We shouldn't attack people just because it is their time to jump off.
