  1. Some good news from Wilco HQ:

    Greetings friends,

Here's that early December blast of news from Wilco HQ.

First, Jeff Tweedy will play 2 shows at the Boulder Theater (Boulder, CO) on January 7-8 to help celebrate the theater's 75th anniversary and tickets go onsale next week. More info here. More juicy ticketing news: after some deep sleuthing, we're happy to announce that we busted some people (that is assuming you consider scalpers people) who violated our ticketing procedures for Mr. Tweedy's Dec. 7 show at Washington DC's historic Lincoln Theatre. As promised and threatened, we've revoked those purchases and will be releasing the approximately 100 tickets for sale to the public (that's you) next Monday, Dec. 6 at noon EST here. Purchasers will be limited to 2 tickets. No previous buyers for that show will be allowed to purchase again and tickets are non-transferrable and will be available only at will call with an ID. And as a review, we encourage everyone to review our ticket policies here.

All that talk of undercover ops and will call windows have you in need of caffeine? We hear you -- and with that in mind we've partnered with our friends and fellow Chicagoans Intelligentsia Coffee & Tea to bring you some fresh beans for the season. Wilco Selects Coffee -- perfect for the holiday hibernation season. Silly? Perhaps. But trust us it'll be some of the best coffee you've ever tasted and the mug that comes along with it is really nice and available for order through this Sunday, Dec. 5th only. And for those of you not purchasing your holiday gifts in local record stores (and we encourage you to do so), here's our plug for the wilco store... 25% off all music, posters, books + special bundles, new shirts, etc. The full rundown is here.

okay, back to 2011 planning and coffee brewing.

    cheers & snowy dreams.

the Wilco HQ elves, all hopped up.

There is supposed to be a link for the sale of those extra 100 tickets for the DC show, but it's not there. Has anyone figured out where those tickets will be on-sale Monday? Thanks

  2. I've always had really good experiences at Merriweather. I'm surprised people hate it as much as they do. Yeah, I was at the Merriweather last time they played. It's big.

I went to Merriweather once when I first moved to DC in '03 and had a terrible experience, so I've never been back. I couldn't see or hear Radiohead from the lawn. I also think it would be a huge disappointment to see Wilco there, when they you can get them up close at the 930 so often.

  3. I have been going through my bootleg catalogue and picking & choosing from Jeff's solo performances to recreate Wilco albums. I've started with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - since that material is easiest to track down. I thought I'd share the results with everyone. I've worked with Audacity a little to even out some of the rough crowd noise, but I haven't done anything too fancy. It's far from perfect, but not bad.

The album is at the following link, all the tracks are mp3's:

Here's the tracklist, and the shows they came from:

    1. I am Trying to Break Your Heart (3-4-2005)

    2. Kamera (4-6-2007)

    3. Cars Can't Escape (1-31-2007)

** Jeff has never played Radio Cure solo, so I subbed this YHF-era song in. I think it fits pretty well.**

    4. War on War (5-16-2003)

    5. Jesus Etc. (10-30-2006)

    6. Ashes of American Flags (3-8-2001)

    7. Heavy Metal Drummer (3-8-2001)

    8. I'm the Man Who Loves You (2-26-2001)

    9. Pot Kettle Black (4-6-2007)

    10. Poor Places (5-16-2003)

    11. Reservations (9-13-2000)

    Bonus Tracks:

    12. A Magazine Called Sunset (4-8-2006)

    13. Bob Dylan's 49th Beard (1-4-2000)

Being There is up next. If anyone has Jeff solo versions of "What's the World Got in Store" or "Why Would you Wanna Live", PM me.

    Thanks and enjoy!

  4. Did anyone see them open their show at Otto's in Dekalb a few years back with this? It was before Ghost even came out. My god, it was probably the greatest opening track of a concert I've ever seen. It opens so quiet....then BOOM!! It hits you like a sledgehammer...one of my all time favorite live songs for any band.

Yeah, love listening to that boot. Really extended solo on that version too, an extra 2 minutes or so. Great show overall - loose and fun.

  5. My most memorable walkout was a George Clinton show at the 930 Club about 3 years ago. He had a stage ensemble of like 20 people, rotating singers and performers. There were whole shift changes between songs, like a hockey team - 6 people would leave the stage and 6 more would come on. George was probably on stage for about half the show. It got to be about 2:00am and the Club turned on all the lights trying to get the band to stop, but HE KEPT PLAYING. At least half the audience had left by then. For some reason, we tried to stick it out, because I'm never in favor of walking out on a show, but it was painful. He really outlasted his entire audience. My friend's sister was able to lie down on the floor and nap for the last 10 minutes. And we didn't even make it to the end. He was still playing when we left.

  6. I got maybe 3 pages into Blood Meridian and couldn't go on. Is all his writing that choppy?

His sentences are short and sweet. He leaves a lot of room for the reader to fill in the gaps. I like that style, but it's not for everyone.

I read "All the Pretty Horses" within the last year and that is a great story. He writes violence really well. That's the first one in the Border trilogy (which also includes Blood Meridian), which is supposed to be his strongest material. A couple of his books have already gotten film treatments, but I've never seen any of those.

  7. I was watching DVD project voulme 84 (detroit July 03) for the first time today. It was the first time The Late Greats was played. It's strange to hear it that slow. It's still a great song. At Least That's What You Said and Muzzle Of Bees were also played that day but it's not on the DVD. I'd like to hear them. Anyone's got an audio of those songs on that show? Or even from that period. Thanks.

I came up with most of the tracks off AGIB from a few 2003 shows. Some of these versions are pretty cool.

  8. Also consider that they probably tracked around 30+ songs. There might be 4 or 5 great songs you have never heard before. I'm kind of hoping for that scenario.

I'm hoping for that one too. Back when AGIB came out, I think Hell is Chrome was the only track that hadn't really popped up anywhere else prior to the album (Wilco live, Jeff solo, some other EP), and it was/is one of my favorite Wilco songs.

  9. Wow. Excellent piece on Ed tonight. What a neat man.

I didn't know much about him, but the 60 Minutes retrospective last night was quite good.

Interesting to see how integrated he was in the New Orleans music community and how close he was with Jimmy Buffett.

Plus, that footage of him getting shot in the arm in Vietnam... man, that kind of journalism is just nuts.

  10. I downloaded this off of ZOMB torrents two weeks ago or so, I think it's still up there (http://zombtracker.the-zomb.com/index.php - registration required). It doesn't sound like an official release by any means. They are all studio tracks, but they vary in sound quality and clarity. To my ear, "Wish you were Here" doesn't sound like Thom at all - not even sure it's Radiohead performing it.

Oh, and "Wonderwall" sounds much more like Billy Corgan than Thom.

  11. 01 - Lozenge Of Love

    02 - Subterranean Homesick Alien

    03 - Killer Cars

04 - Wish You Were Here

    05 - Creep

    06 - Black Star

    07 - Street Spirit

    08 - Wonderwall

    09 - Blow Out

    10 - Lucky

    11 - High & Dry

    12 - Fake Plastic Trees

    13 - How I Made My Millions

    14 - Bulletproof

    15 - Banana Co.

    16 - Yes I Am

    17 - Life In A Glasshouse

You can find it on various BT sites.

  12. I found Wilco on Napster back in early 2000, when it was free and everyone was stealing music. Although, my first Wilco experience was from uncopyrighted material: I downloaded a Jeff solo acoustic version of "I'm Always in Love" (which I later identified as an Abbey Pub bootleg). Still love that version. I bought Being There a few months later and went on from there.

My first Wilco live experience was 3-8-2001, Jeff solo at the Fillmore in San Francisco. Of course, this was a great show, documented in the Wilco Movie:

    1. Not For The Season

    2. Sunken Treasure

    3. A Shot In The Arm

    4. Hesitating Beauty

    5. Remember The Mountain Bed

    6. How To Fight Loneliness

    7. I'm Always In Love

    8. Pick Up The Change

    9. Heavy Metal Drummer

    10. Wait Up

    11. New Madrid

    12. She's A Jar

    13. Ashes Of American Flags

    14. I Am Trying To Break Your Heart

    15. I'm The Man Who Loves You

    16. Passenger Side

    17. Please Tell My Brother

    18. Should've Been In Love

    19. Acuff-Rose

    20. California Stars

I've been to 11 shows since.

  13. Too many great ones already mentioned, but here are some new entries:

    My Morning Jacket - Dondante

    Weezer - Only in Dreams

Billy Joel - Scenes from an Italian Restaurant

    Allman Brothers - Whipping Post

Bob Marley - No Woman No Cry

    Pearl Jam - Release

    Gillian Welch - I Dream a Highway

    GnR - Estranged

Janis Joplin - Ball & Chain

    Lynryd Skynryd - Free Bird

The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again

    Just missing the cut:

    Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (6:53)

Radiohead - Paranoid Android (this feels longer than 6:25)

  14. hah thanks alot .. ironically only minutes after i posted this my friend was like hey look at this and sent me that exact same page .. haha but thanks anyways ;)

Gumbopages doesn't have a great tab for "Kamera." I think it's pretty close on the chords, but it doesn't sound like the album version at all. I think you have to tune to Open D to get what Jeff's doing.
