LouieB
renic reminded me that the original scroll of On The Road is at Columbia College here in Chicago through the end of November. I checked it out yesterday evening and this is really worth a look. When I got there they had just re-rolled it so that the end was showing, the end that was eaten by the dog at the end of book 4. Actually seeing this after hearing about it my whole life was pretty moving. I understand this has been exhibited in San Fransico, but not sure where else it is going to be exhibited. Also with the exhibit where old and new versions of the books and translations from around the world. After the gallery opened a lit teacher from the college gave a talk on the significance of the scroll. He did a decent job, but strangely after it was over I went over to talk to him and he seemed unwilling to talk. However a young student from a different college came up to ask him about it and didn't know anything about Kerouac (she asked if he was still alive..). The prof wasn't that interested in talking to her either and started to edge towards the door. On the way out I broke my usual rule not giving street people money and dropped five bucks on a woman who was asking for money at the corner of Roosevelt and Wabash. On a double historic occasion it only seemed right. LouieB

NightOfJoy
Thanks for the heads up. I had plans with a friend to go walk over and see it one Tuesday afternoon in mid September 2001 but those plans got scratched.

tapmyglass
I agree with Louie B definitely check this out if you get a chance. I saw it last month when I was visiting my brother at Columbia and it was pretty interesting.
