Beadsman, I see you found the post to be rubbish, but from your post I'm unable to tell what your objection is really.

Yes, that last line does seem pretty over-dramatic when taken out of context, but really I think she's making a pretty basic point about what BS the whole 'rock purity' mythology is. As well as another good point about how the music industry has changed in recent years.

But I take it you think Wilco is beyond redemption or something? What's your point?

it's understandable if he was writing about the new album and their touring, but he wants to write about the band in general... and jay deserves as much credit as anyone else in wilco does.

I think what he was saying, and I don't want to put words in anyone's mouth, was not to write about the circumstances of Jay's leaving the band. That's been pretty much hashed out, and doesn't bear much relevance to the music.

I haven't gotten the DVD yet--I know, bad, bad, Wilco fan--but I'm wondering as to what this thing holds? Could someone enlighten me? Are there any special features like extra songs or interviews with Jeff? Is it just a straight concert DVD, or are is there a documentary kick to it too. I'm hoping to pick it up this week, but I'm dying to know what it is all about.

It's sort of half way between a documentary and a concert movie. It follows him on a leg of his solo tour. Some backstage and travelling stuff, in between portions of concerts.

The only bonus feature is that you can download ("free" or "not free," depending on your firmly held convictions either way) .mp3's of the songs in the dvd.

I'm still hoping we can all just agree to disagree on this one. Now matter what we feel about it, the two sides still don't look to me as if they have any chance of convincing each other.

The prize in the cereal box is a good illustration, though i believe it proves the opposite point: you can't go into a supermarket and start taking out those prizes from the boxes and walk out with them. You have to buy the cereal if you want that prize. They're part of the deal, hence not free.

this debate reminds me of frustrating conversations i've had with people who insisted that downloading albums without paying wasn't really stealing. I was never one to condemn people for doing that, because I do it myself sometimes. But the rationalizations were annoying.

It's incredibly slow, but I imagine that's because everyone's trying to do it right now. I'm going to just finish this one song and do the rest tomorrow. Mostly, I'm just happy to know that this will definitely work.

big ups to HQ for working with everyone. i will admit i was frustrated myself, just because i really wanted to hear the tracks. the wilcoworld crew was always communicative and on the ball, though, so I was never mad at them. Just impatient to hear the tunes! I think that's how the other "complainers" felt as well, so don't be too hard on them.

Do you think (or know) that the downloads will include some of those "interlude" songs, but without the extraneous talking etc.? that would be awesome.

And while it amounts to little more than semantics, the tracks are not really free. They are part of what you paid for when you bought the dvd. The only reason this matters is that it would not be appropriate to post the tracks here for download, because that would take away that extra incentive to buy.

But I'm certainly not here to police anyone. I'm just sayin'...

I don't know if he tours or not though. I didn't even know if he was still alive until I found out he had a new album. I got my hands on it and it's really good. The music really sounds as good as anything he's done, IMO.

If you're not familiar with him, Jansch is a British folk guitar player who had some success in the sixties and into the seventies. Neil Young cites him as one of the primary influences on his guitar playing. (See the book: "Shakey")

Warning - this YSI track in .wma format. My whole "Someone Else's Songs" collection listed below is in wma format, but I know it has been converted to mp3 somewhere along the line, but I don't have any of it. Maybe A-man, or someone else who has this in mp3 format, can re-post the track and/or both the discs? That would be great.

I've never bought a Wilco record, I just listen to bootlegs of shows. I find it a more pure way to listen to them. No middleman or record company in between.

Also no $$ going to the band. One of the arguments in favor of allowing taping is that fans will still buy the albums. I think it's a gesture of good will to hold up that end of the bargain.

I wish they sounded better though. They should think about playing a show with no audience and then bootlegging that.

I remember after "aeroplane" came out hearing that tweedy called it one of the best albums he'd heard, or something along those lines.

I have a teensy problem... My computer isn't reading the Sunken Treasure disc! so i cant find the quicktime file that brings up the downloads... Any ideas as to why?

Are you going to 'my computer' and right clicking on the disc, choosing 'open'? (as opposed to play)

maybe your computer doesn't read dvds, but it should be able to find the extras files on the disc

Does that make me a bad fan? Especially considering I own a bunch of Wilco boots. And I used to record shows.

Also, I never bought the Loose Fur CDs - actually, I might have the 1st one, I can't remember.

I won't judge how good a fan you are, haha. I do think it should be pointed out that KT sounds WAY better than the boots I've gotten my hands on. That's nothing against the bootlegs, I sure am glad to hear em! But there really is a difference in quality.

You really probably should get the new Loose Fur. You might not realize it yet, but you really want it. Buy it, you'll see.

I'm getting the same thing.

Before I wasn't able to update my Quicktime to accept flash, but then I upgraded to the newest quicktime and I was able to do that.

What does IE or Firefox have to do with it? I checked wilcoworld to see if there was some sort of link, but didn't see anything.

I agree. I knew I would enjoy it, but it ended up being more than just good music. It became sort of a meditation on why we go to shoes, what it all means. This film has a storyline that shows the interaction of an artist and his audience. Tweedy's comment about these shows functioning the same way a church should rang very true. I certainly felt like the film gave me a chance to kind of re-set my compass.

Much more than just great performances of great songs.
