No wonder Being There is such a great album!

  2. This is proving to be an exciting challenge.

    A little background:

She's not too familiar with Wilco, and I'm taking her to the Count Basie show. Possibly Merriweather, too. We're driving in her car and she tells me she's never really heard them. So I told her I'd make her a mix tape! She laughed and jokingly told me it had to be an actual tape (no Cd's or ipod mixes). So that's what I'm going to do. I dug up a secret stash of Maxell XLII's at my parent's house and am going to make the world's first Wilco "ipod playlist --> cassette tape" mix.

She's not my girlfriend, but I love her and we've had a thing going here or there for the past year. She's moving to Arizona this summer which is exciting and heart-wrenching all at the same time.

Somehow I want to say it all in the perfect Wilco mix tape. With the perfect old high-school-era baring of the soul mix tape nuances, but still as light and fun as our relationship has been with each other.

I've begun some serious work on it, but I'm open to any suggestions. I've decided not to limit it to just Wilco, but include a little Tweedy, Uncle Tupelo, Golden Smog, etc.

Each side 45 minutes, with an opener & closer that leads into the next side of the tape. Hopefully the kind of tape that you stick on in your car and listen to over and over as it flips from side to side driving across the country.

I'd love to hear some suggestions before I post the work in progress. :)

Oh, that is sooooo sweet! I'm sorry this is a late response, but it is coming from the opposite end of a similar story. My fiancee had feelings for me before I did for him, but I think the Wilco/Tweedy mix he made for me made me fall for Wilco AND him. His mix was perfect...

This mix did it for me!!!

  3. I live/work in a small, Midwestern town. I have to hear that damned "Check You For Ticks," song (or whatever the hell it's called) and that "Brand New Girlfriend" song about fifty times a night respectively. I hate, hate, hate pop country. If I have to hear that Toby Keith lyric about "puttin' a boot in your ass" one more time I THINK I MIGHT GO CRAZY!!!! Alot of his music seems to foster racism and bigotry in my workplace, and the only way I can avoid being ostracized or lynched or something is to mention that I love Johnny Cash. :unsure

  4. I love Sky Blue Sky with all my heart too! They rock as hard as ever, but Wilco has grown up, and this album appeals to a more mature audience. I think what Tweedy/Wilco have discovered is that good song writing does not have to be full of angst and suffering to be strong or genuine. (It takes a true and strong soul to strive for hope and positivity.) Maybe those who look down on this album's lyrics will appreciate them more once they have had a little more life experience.

  5. While I really dig The National ("The Boxer" especially), I'd have to go with Wilco. With the current line-up, seeing Wilco live is truly an amazing thing to behold these days. Seeing them at the Ryman last year was one of the greatest musical experiences of my life. I can't imagine that the National are as essentially a live band in the way that a band like Wilco or the Hold Steady are, but admittedly, I haven't seen them. I could be wrong.

Also, the previous poster indicated that Wilco's playing songs from "Sky Blue Sky" would be some sort of drawback, but even if you're SBS-hater, the songs really take on new life when played live.

I completely agree with this poster! Go with our beloved Wilco.

  6. Okay, here's an update...

My brother kindly offered us his vacation time-share thingy for next year free of charge. And going by the destinations available, we have it narrowed down to Maui, Barbados, or Manzanillo in Mexico. Thoughts on these?

We finally found a wedding location...

    www.winchesterplace.com

On the subject of the original idea behind this thread...

Since I know it is unlikely at best that Jeff would come to/play at our wedding, I mentioned to Blue and Green that the best alternative would be for him to learn the song and play it himself. Sadly, he's not one to perform in public. So, we may just have to go with a hired musician or a recording.

  7. In my view, the choice comes down to what you want to do while there. Define that and let me know if you want input.

    charles

Wow! Thanks for the input. I think what we're looking for is somewhere quiet, on the beach, romantic rooms, and as natural surroundings as possible. We would also like a place that offered massages for two and hiking trails. Any ideas? Thanks.

    :)

  8. Congrats to you too. I didn't mean to steal any of your thunder since you started the thread. We are trying to be very ambitous for our Honeymoon. I have been saving up time for awhile (Can bank vacation at my company..one of the few perks) and hoping to do Australia/New Zealand for 3 weeks! If we can't wing it job wise we will do Italy/Greece 2 weeks! I figure better do it now before we REALLY have to settledown in life! :cheers Any destinations in the running right now for your honeymoon?

No thunder stolen at all! I love to hear about people getting married.

We can bank our vacation too. So, we are going to take two+ weeks also. We really don't want to have a really long flight, so we were thinking about one of the quieter Caribbean islands. If we decide that a long flight doesn't bother us, then we might consider Kauai. Since I've never been to either place, I was hoping somebody would have some suggestions/insights.

  9. Hey congrats! I am getting married the same week June 1, 2008 and I am just trying to convince the wife to be to have I'm The Man Who Loves you as one of our songs to be interpreted by the band we hired! :dancing

Maybe Jeff can do a one week long wedding tour :stunned

PS I took her to her first Wilco concert this last friday at Red Bank..not her type of music but she still had fun!

Oops! I missed this one. Congratulations to you too! That'll be a pretty special week. If you convince your fiance about the song, that will be pretty kick-ass.

Where are you two going on your honeymoon? We haven't decided yet, and we're open to suggestions.

  10. I don't know, I think that was pretty fair reaction to "do you have problems with intimacy?" Weird thing to say.

Why was that a weird thing to say? First of all, it was half in fun. Second of all, in his post right before mine he mentioned that the personal lyrics and intimate performance caused him to feel uncomfortable. There weren't any words put into anyone else's mouth, and nothing came out of left field.

Under the circumstances, I'm beginning to think you have a problem with intimacy. (Disclaimer: This was a joke. There is no need to get "weird"ed out or anything.) ;)

  11. Now, lovenmercy, why didn't you tell me this sooner? I could have asked him after the show in Indy. Tee-hee!

By the way, Mr. Tweedy's assigned seat better be next to mine! (What?! A girl can dream, right?) :thumbup

I guess we're both in a dreaming mood, huh? :)

  12. Wow! Since being at work and spending a day in the hospital waiting for my nephew to be born, I have missed alot. So, I'll try to respond to everything.

Playing the song from a cd instead of having Jeff there is, of course, an option. But I really like the solo acoustic version of that song for a wedding, and I don't have a really clean copy without some crowd noise.

I hadn't thought about having someone else play it. Somehow it wouldn't be the same without Jeff's voice. That is part of what makes the song so wonderful.

In response to the ... guy, we have plenty of help as far as wedding planning goes, but thanks for the offer. My fiance already has a best man picked out, sorry. And no, I'm not hot...just average.

No, we didn't meet on VC. We met at work (where 99.9% of our co-workers listen to that twangy-pop-country-crap.) Once we realized that we had similar creative and musical interests, it was a fast fall from there. I had only been familiar with Wilco's Summerteeth album, and he had been a fan since the Being There days. He made be a romantic Tweedy mix, and the rest is history. Jeff has been the soundtrack of our lives ever since.

    This is us...

  13. We're going to have an outdoor wedding in one of the Indiana state parks...not sure which one yet. That will be decided this weekend.

And yes, I agree that the certainty of his outstanding performance would overshadow our vows.

It was just a fun idea.
