  1. SUCH a fantastic show! They sounded terrific. J.T. was really chatty, I thought. I loved the sing-a-longs...and I think they would have played quite a bit longer if they could have. I am so sad that I wasn't able to make it to Portland...last minute stuff prevented me. Tonight certainly left me happy, though!

  2. I do this...probably to an obnoxious degree. I don't normally do memes, but a friend just sent me this....thought y'all might be interested. It is kind of short...perhaps we should add to it?

Using only song names from ONE ARTIST, cleverly answer these questions. Pass it on to 10 people you like and include me. You can't use the band I used. Try not to repeat a song title. It's a lot harder than you think!

  3. What would you be storing on there? Are you using it only as a back-up, or additional storage? For just backup storage, you obviously don't need anything much larger than your computer's hard drive. For additional storage, will you be using it for music, photos, DVDs or what?

I will primarily be using it for backup storage. I have no idea what size to buy....

I'm actually picking up an external HD myself this weekend. I finally got a 120 GB Ipod and need to get everything on there (had a 20 GB Dell DJ for years) and I wanted to be able to back up picures, DVD's, etc so I wanted 1 TB

I think I'm picking this one up. In the price range I wanted ($100 ish) and a brand I've generally heard good things about.

Did you pick this up, Boots? How do you like it? I did read some of the reviews on your link...what is your assessment? I am finally going to buy one this week so I'm back on the research.

  4. In some of the earlier comments the Dumbledore death scene was discussed and questioned about Harry's inactivity. My guess is the director wanted to emphasize that Harry was putting his trust totally in Dumbledore. Maybe to show Harry's maturity or perhaps to set up for the next 2 movies. As I recall, in book 7 Harry starts to lose faith in Dumbledore because he feels like he was betrayed by Dumbledore's unwillingness to disclose to Harry everything he knew about Voldemort. So maybe that was the thought process.

Oooooo. Food for thought! I'm hoping to catch it again this week.

  5. Well sorry you had a bad experience. Trying to get an old number back? I was able to get 10c tix for both philly shows, so I am psyched. My only complaint is that it used to be a LOT easier to get tix, for some reason it seems like the whole world rediscovered pearl jam in 2006. And there are a lot more scalpers in the 10C as well.

I hope you find a way to make your show of choice, but if not, dont despair. They will be back and, after all, it is just a rock concert.

If its not fun, time to move on to less stressful pleasures.

    Good luck.

It DID used to be easier, right?! I am not as hardcore as I used to be...not since I discovered Wilco, frankly. However, I agree with you- PJ is a phenomenal live show. I am still that superfan at heart that MUST GO TO EACH SHOW. The good news is that I fully realize how petulant and ridiculous I am being about the whole thing! I'll be over it soon! Keep us posted as to how your shows (plural! Yay for you!) go!

  6. $167 for Philly

but as long as people trade and copy their music, I will not begrudge the band for raising ticket prices or taking advantage of commercial opportunities-compared to what other arena acts charge, the prices are not that bad-this isnt 1994.

seniority has been handled pretty well, your seats are still dictated by your 10C number (except rows 1-2 and 9-10 which are random.

are you saying senior members should get first crack at tickets? every member has an equal chance at tix and thats pretty fair

the 10c tix were $11.50 less per pair that comcast tickets, so there is a discount

the 10c does what it can to get the best seats-I have never been disappointed, and the tix are always better than whats available on TM

many moons ago, the fans made it clear that they would rather deal with TM than not have any shows, so the band has made compromises, but its ultimately so they can play shows

For my money, they are still one of the top live acts in the US, and their shows are not to be missed IMHO!

    rant over :D

You're right. My irritation with seniority really has nothing to do with tickets, really. It's an old gripe...long story and one that is ultimately probably my own issue. I shouldn't even have broached it. I was just ranting. I do fully agree that it is fair that every member have an equal chance. They are a phenomenal live show- which is probably why I was so pissy about the whole thing. Thank you for diplomatically and delicately reasoning with me! I hope you are able to attend and have a great time. I despair that I don't think I can go this round.

  7. Also, people have complained about them just walking out of the castle without a fight:

I think tht better illustrates how dumbeldore's death further emboldened the death eaters and how truly helpless everyone else was.

I kind of see what you mean...but they weren't really all that helpless, were they? Especially in light of what we discover in 7 about Dumbledore already being on his way out. You know? I think that the burden is actually heavier on Malfoy (with whom I was really impressed in this movie) if he is alone with Dumbledore on the tower. Then it is just he and the headmaster.

I didn't like that dumbledore didn't put Harry in the spell so he couldn't move. Harry has always been irrational and a bit of a risk taker, especially when emotions run high. He woulnt have just watched it happen.

Exactly! The movie portrayal dilutes both Harry's rashness and Dumbledore's sacrifice (although...considering my earlier argument- he was already on his way out. Either way- it saved Harry).

I was dragged to opening night by my girlfriend (not midnight, but 8pm on Wednesday), having only seen Azkaban and never having read a book. I LOVED it, and have started reading the first book now.

I hope you do read them! I have friends that are hesitant to read them. I always ask them if there would be this extraordinary amount of hooplah if the books were worthless. They are indeed more layered, rich, and complex than the movies allow. But the movies are great fun! I was also disappointed (but not surprised) that the other memories were not included! I really wanted to meet Merope!

  8. I did really enjoy the movie- but I had a few problems with it. My first is that Harry isn't shown at the Dursley's. I did think it was interesting to see Harry out in the Muggle world but I would have loved to see Dumbledore chastise them. Secondly, the burning of the Burrow. NEVER happened. I don't mind when films deviate from their books- but this just bothered me. I understand wanting to make the danger from the Death Eaters more imminent and real- but I thought if fell flat. Finally, the scene in which Dumbledore is murdered. I second that I wasn't as upset at the film. I think that cutting that battle scene made it less dramatic. Having all the Death Eaters on the tower just didn't seem right. What made his death the sadder for me in the book (and I BAWLED) was that Dumbledore sacrificed himself for Harry. In a split second he chose to freeze Harry rather than save himself. The film seemed to dilute that sacrifice. Plus, I don't think Harry would have just sat there because Dumbledore asked him to. With his loathing for Malfoy and his love for Dumbledore, I think he would have acted like the rash teenager he is- not a self-possessed, clear-thinking individual.

Yes, I do know that there is no way to 100% faithfully execute a book like that one into a cohesive film. I think that the previous movies, 5 especially, have done a really good job. I just really take issue with the Burrow and the tower scenes. All that said- I thought this one was great fun. I laughed a lot. McLaggen was HYSTERICAL. What a perfect creep. I loved Lavendar- but I also thought she was black for some reason. The sets and costumes are phenomenal. I will probably see it a few more times in the theater...and I will definitely add it to my DVD collection.

  9. Aside from sharing the titles from other bands, those song titles sound like they were written by a 10-year-old girl (no offense to 10-year-old girls).

WAAAAAAAAA!!!! That really made me laugh. I'm getting anxious to hear this album. I hear that ticket prices for the regular sale were just as steep as the pre-sale.

  10. He is; the interview was posted in the reviews thread awhile ago and is available online. I looked at the print version the other day at a book store, and was appalled by the editing. More specifically, the lack thereof. This is admittedly one of my pet peeves, but how can a magazine call itself legitimate and publish something like this? As a pull quote, no less?

    You're muscles? Really? ARE YOU?

Not to mention the fact that throughout the entire article they refer to Nels as Nils. Multiple mentions. Some by Jeff. I really try not to be insufferable about this, but it makes me angry. I halfway expect this crap online now that anyone can be a "journalist," but if it's extending to national print media, that's just a sad state of affairs.

Incidentally, the magazine also includes a list of American Songwriter's favorite songs from 1984-2009, and Ashes is #3.

I just bought this and had the same reaction...frankly, it makes their (they're) credibility suspect to me. I haven't read the entire article yet. I'm sure I'll be even more incensed.

  11. I need to vent. I'm gearing up for Monday's Ten Club pre-sale. A pair of tickets is $148. Perhaps in the year since I've been to a show (at all) costs have skyrocketed. Does this seem excessive? I have been a Ten Club member for over ten years now, I think? I have not been impressed with several things:

a)the way that seniority has been handled over the years (poorly)

b)that Ten Club members aren't given some sort of discount for tickets (Dave Matthews does!) because

    c) in years past my seats have been awful for some shows

d)hey, guys- remember that one time you went before Congress?

e)I'm SURE that despite their history, the $148 will have a penny or two attached for fees

I think I'm just shocked at how expensive these shows are and I was planning on going both nights. I guess my days of going to every show within a 300 miles radius for a tour are over. I'm not quite ready to break up with them (although, I can't blame Heather over at fuelfriends I Am Fuel, You Are Friends), just frustrated. I feel better...of course I'm going to shell out the cash and go- like I always do.

  12. I've bought a couple of external drives over the years, but I'm hardly an expert. I currently have a 320 GB Seagate Free Agent Desktop drive. No problems with it so far, and I've had it for over two years.

Be aware that just because the box says 500 GB, or 750 GB, or whatever, that doesn't mean you'll actually get that amount of storage. They're always quite a bit short of that. My 320 GB drive only has 298 GB of real capacity. Why they can label drives with capacity numbers that they don't actually possess, I don't pretend to understand.

I don't pretend to understand ANY of it! I don't know how much GB I really need. Thanks for the tips- I really appreciate it, Cryptique. We'll see!

  13. have you tried resyncing the ipod with itunes? not a restore, just a resync. that might fix the song cut off problem...it could have glitched transferring those songs onto the ipod and will be fine if you retry.

    I'll give that a shot...thanks, Isadorah!

  14. 1)So....I'm no longer in denial. I need to buy an external hard drive. Suggestions? Caveats? Comments?

2)I am also having a really annoying issue with itunes (especially since it is prohibiting listening to Dark Neon on my ipod). I have successfully downloaded a few tracks, and they play in itunes on my computer- but for some reason cut off when playing on my ipod. BLERG! I am loathe to Restore without having backed everything up to an external. DILEMMA! Am I missing some simple trick here? I have the current version, etc. Ideas?

    Thanks, VC!!

    Molly

  15. If I have hooked you up with a B-side recently and you'd like to express your thanks, checking out that charity list and kicking a little donation to one of them would be highly appreciated.

    --Mike

That is an excellent suggestion, Mike. I think I will do just that...your good turn deserves another, after all.
