  1. i've got about an 8 year old acoustic that has lately been struggling to stay in tune. the pegs that hold the strings in seem to be the problem, to me. in low E peg keeps popping out.

does this happen to others? is this a usual thing? do i just replace them? are all pegs the same or should i bring my guitar to the store for help fitting specific ones?

Sounds likea bad tuner - the gears sometimes grind over time.

They are not all the same (different pole sizes and associated holes and scew locations). Bring it into a good repari shop and they can put some new ones on for you (they may find something else, too).

They are easy to replace youself, as well. Check out www.stewmac.com. Gives good dimensions to help spot the ones you need.

  2. Top 5 as of 11-22-07 8:45 PM PST:

    1. If I am a Stranger - Ryan Adams (the new EP version)

    2. Spiders - Jeff Tweedy (solo acoustic from the Living Room Show)

    3. Dead Flowers - Townes Van Zandt (Where's the money, Lebowski!)

    4. Badfish Boss DJ - Jack Johnson (From Sublime Tribute Compilation)

    5. Cowgirl in the Sand - Neil Young (from the Live at Massey Hall CD)

  3. The lick you are referring to (I think) is the barre to hammer on like this:

    -2--2----2--2--
    -2--2h3--3--2--
    -2--2----2--2--
    -2--2h4--4--2--
    -2--2----2--2--
    --------------

This is a little guitar trick used A LOT by Keef: 'Start Me Up', 'Brown Sugar', 'Honkey Tonk Women'

For newer tunes, check out Ryan Adams Gold LP: 'New York' among others.

    Speaking of musical similarities ...

Ever notice how many JT songs have these chords (1st position and relative to capo):

    -2--0-
    -3--3-
    -2--0-
    -0--0-
    ----2-
    ----x-

  5. I am actually a bit of a freak. I never play with a pick.

I use thumb for bass and index middle and ring to catch various (and often random) strings.

I sorta travis pick by default. Works well for solo sunken treasure, et. al.

  6. Tweedy does it in slack G, and it looks like BolivarBalues has more the piano stuff added in too...so I would say the first one. I think video proves it, for the most part.

I have not seen the video. Can anyone share it with me?

  7. I really love the solo jeff version of this song. I am trying to get it under my fingers.

Is this the best consensus for this? The last fella has it in standard; the first fella in Open G. There are lots of comments in the middle.

Does anyone have a definitive version??

    Thanks in advance!

  8. I think what Jeff is referring to is this:

with a capo at II, then you really are playing those 10-12-10 & 12-12-12 chords at 12-14-12 & 14-14-14. Pretty tough for an acoustic without a cutaway.

Therefore, I think Jeff plays it without capo (making the 12 fret do-able).

That is the key change: down a full step.
