  1. Overall, the album is good. Nothing spectacular or groundbreaking, but its enjoyable. Very, very laid back.

The guitar work in Wilco is definitely taking a different direction, and I'm liking what I hear.

  2. Jeff gave a pretty good explanation of the event at his solo show in Champaign a few days later.

Basically, the security at the show was a joke. It was held at a Shriner's temple, and according to Jeff they were more interested in hanging out at the bar than policing the show. So first this girl comes on stage and starts playing piano and no one gets her off. Later she's "convulsing on the ground" or something and in general just acting weird. Then, during "Airline to Heaven," this kid comes on stage. Jeff just expects him to do the usual "wooo! look at me!" and run back into the crowd, but he feels this kid move behind him. At this point he "had had it," and on any normal night he "probably would have let him fondle me" because he knew there'd be security guards on top of this guy quickly. But not this night. So when this kid comes up to him from behind and grabs his head, he quickly spun around in self defense and knocked the kid back.

"Next day, "TWEEDY ATTACKS FANS." That's everything wrong with America right there."

And wtf is with the "just as bad as Republicans" line? WTF do republicans have to do with this incident?

  3. After having been lucky enough to have seen a Tweedy solo show and having a few live discs of his I have this to say. Some of the performances on Sunken are amazing and some are ok. Theologians being perhaps my least favorite performance of a great song ever. But I do think that the DVD is an attempt at recreating the feeling of being at the show and I think that it suceeds. An acoustic solo show is far different than a rock concert. At a rock concert it is all about bombast and in your face music that completely surounds you. And for the most part unless some jackass is right next to you screaming at the top of his lungs no matter what you can hear the music and singing. But when it comes to an acoustic performance the crowd needs to show a little restraint and reverance towards the music. That is what the few hecklers seem to forget. We did not come to the show to hear them. The singer did not come just to play for them. So shouting out "That's amazing!" in the middle of a whistle solo is considered rude and annoying. I have to agree with the person that agreed with Tweedy. STFU! I came to the show to hear the beand, singer, performer not you or my friends or myself! If I wanted that I could throw the record on at a bar or my house and ask everyone to sing along or comment. Jeff has every right to be vexed by the members of the audience that are detracting from the concert expereince for the larger group. In fact he is speaking for the rest of us. How many times have you been to a concert and have been either too far away from the idiot to prevent him from making further outbursts either that or has that idiot been too drunk to listen to reason and even though EVERYONE wants the jerk to shut up, when it comes down to an altercation to do just that no one else is willing to step up and back up the person who does.

Please excuse my rant, I feel like Jeff Tweedy on stage. But I agree with him and as to wether or not it needs to be on the DVD, it might need to be this way the idiot who talks during it might see the outburst and think well maybe I shouldn't yell the first monosyllabic thing that pops into my head just because I am in crowd and no one can definitively pick me out.

See: Champaign show, 2006. Lamest. Crowd. Ever. Jeff clearly had a "you guys are a bunch of d-bags" attitude.

  4. Is it just me or does Jeff really not like the crowd in Champaign?

I saw Wilco play at Foellinger back in feb. '05, and both times he just seemed to be making fun of a lot of people in the audience. I've seen him elsewhere and it wasn't exactly the same dynamic.

I think he just gets kind of annoyed at the "idiot college kids," but he takes it in stride and just gives it right back to them.

  6. I was told of those place's as well as Murphy's. That's probably where we'll start out before the show. It's close to our hotel.

Murphy's is ok for a college bar, but its still sort of a dump.

  7. Is anybody here going?

If so, do you know the cool places to grab a drink before/after the show? I've been to Chamaign twice before for shows, but never went out, so I have no idea where the good bars are.

I'm going, and I live on campus.

Foellinger is at the heart of campus, right at the end of the main quad. Most of the bars on campus are complete crap-holes, but there's some ok ones. Legends, Firehaus, or Bar Louie would probably be your best bets. All are less than a ten minute walk to Foellinger.
