A vintage model MXR Distortion+ is a wondrous thing. No tone knob and it tends to be a bit trebly, so that may or may not be an issue. I love mine though. I'm currently using a Blues Driver for a kinda-fuzzy overdrive, the Dist+. and a vintage Big Muff for fuzz. Pretty good trio of gain pedals, I'd say.

It might be a Schroeder (sp.?) amp, they're a guitar repair/custom builder outfit out of Chicago, and apparently Wilco has started using their stuff. There's a link to the company in the Wilcoweb "Links" section.

Your best option is probably an AVT combo, similar to what abuharabi described. Maybe you can find a used all-tube combo for a decent price.

Recently modded my rig, added a Blues Driver as my main overdrive. Great pedal for the price, if you like gritty, kind of fuzzy overdrive (which I do). I've also been playing my hollowbody a lot more compared to the Jazzmaster. I may add a Bigsby to it as some point.

I had one for a while, but ended up selling it, I think mostly because of the signal loss that lost highway mentioned. I think it's fine for subtle spring reverb effects, but I think I was looking for something more prominent as far as a reverb effect goes.

My favorite setup? Between my MIJ Jazzmaster and Jay Turser Sheraton copy, I'd probably go with the Jazzmaster.

I like my Supro Sahara, it's a good solid basic tube amp. If I could afford it, I'd buy a Swart Atomic Space Tone.

Pedalwise, I'd go with my Big Muff, Ibanez DE-7, Colorsound Tremolo, Boss PS-5 (especially once I figure out how to use it), and something for overdrive (DOD 250 or MXR Dist+). Oh, and a TU-2. It's hard to go wrong with delay, fuzz, and some sort of overdrive/distortion, plus a pedal or two for modulation effects.

Speaking of Crazy Horse, I find this pedal the other day by Durham Electronics called, um, the Crazy Horse. Based on the sound samples, it might be an appropriate name. If I could afford one, I'd get one right now.

If you want to take the bass out of your signal, probably an EQ pedal is the way to go. The Danelectro Fish n Chips EQ is pretty good and really cheap. That, or get a treble booster for your leads and adjust your amp accordingly.

I used to have an RX Overdriver, it's cool for what it does, but it doesn't really have a broad range of sounds available. With me, for most of the drive range it was just mostly a fairly clean boost or light overdriven sound. Then, at around 3 o'clock, it turned into a fuzzy overdrive, with increasing fuzziness in the 4-5 o'clock range. Some of that may have been because I was running my amp pretty clean and I was trying to use the Overdrive as an overdrive by itself. I could see it working better (in an overdrive sense) pushing an amp that's on the edge of breaking up, or in conjunction with another gain pedal. I did like the fuzzy overdrive, but for the price I paid for it, it didn't really seem worth it at the time. VintageFX sells a $99 clone of the Colorsound Overdriver (called the Colordrive) that sounds pretty similar to the Overdriver based on the sound samples, so that might be a cheaper alternative.

Yeah, I'm guessing the recorded version is a cranked small tube amp. Live, it'd probably be using his RX Overdriver to push his amp, although I've seen some pics floating around with Jeff using a 15 W Swart Atomic Space Tone live in addition to the trusty Vox, so maybe he would use that for the solo.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. I know Jeff has had a Boss PS-5 pedal in his arsenal which I assume could pull off that harmony-octave sound. It could also be a matter of technique or mixing two guitars, but I think you could also do it with a good octave/harmonizer pedal.

Well, this isn't something I can do right away, I don't really have a work area set up or the proper tools for it right now, I was thinking more down the road. You're right, it's a big project and I want to make sure I know, more or less, what I'm doing before undertaking it. I think, when I get the chance, I'll buy or borrow a book on acoustic guitar making and start practicing some of the things I'd need to be able to do.

I'm seriously thinking about trying this out, but I was wondering if anyone on the board has had any experience with building an acoustic guitar and could give me any advice or warnings before I invest too much into this project.

Nice looking pedalboard, danelectro. Yeah, I've heard great things about the Crunch Box too, I'd thought about getting one. In the end, though, I decided that I was happy with my OD/Distortion setup (a DOD250 and a vintage MXR Dist+).

I have a Martin 000X1, and I like it a lot. Maybe you just got a bad one (or I got a good one).

I don't know if this has already been posted/discussed, but if you go to the store on Wilcoworld, they're selling a songbook with guitar and piano tabs for a bunch of Wilco songs for about $25. Looks like it's about 4-5 songs from each album, so you get a nice range of songs to look at. I've got my fingers crossed that they've transcribed the solo for "I'm the Man...", it's one of the songs in the book so hopefully that's the case.

I'm a big fan of the DOD 250 reissue. It's based on the MXR Dist+ circuit, but it has less gain so it's more of an overdrive than a distortion. It doesn't affect my tone (near as I can tell), so it sounds like my amp and guitar, only overdriven. They're about $40 new on Musicians Friend and other online gear sites.
