This was the highlight of the night for me. I absolutely was in awe and basically in a trance for these first 7 songs. It just flowed so well and the lighting was very cool. I enjoy hearing new songs because I like to see bands evolve and experiment. If I heard some of these songs over and over again, I would probably not go anymore. I've been going to concerts for almost 20 years now and I follow about a handful of bands religiously. Wilco is one of the best live bands, if not thee best band live in my handful of bands that I follow. The show last night was just so smooth and transitioned so well. I love the ups and downs. It's like being on a roller coaster ride. Sometimes my toes just dig into my shoes and then sometimes I just felt pure bliss. Yes, I was one of the people sitting in the circle section but we had front row seats and they were OUTSTANDING. The sight line was amazing. Full view of everything and the sound was crisp and clear.

This was my 3rd show at the Overture and I have to say this is the first time I saw the crowd on the floor standing and grooving. Seems to me there were always sitting and standing issues, but I could be wrong. We might have been sitting but I can tell you, everyone around me was bopping their heads or tapping their legs. The ovations were loud and well deserved. I love going to shows at Overture. I love going to Madison period. The whole experience of going around town and taking in the city is half of the experience. Another solid show by Wilco. Nick Lowe was very good. First time seeing him. I had to Wikipedia him actually to see what he was all about. I have heard of him but I was unaware of his bio. He's very talented and was a good opener I thought.

  2. It's unbelievable what people do at concerts to try and get you to sit down. I've gotten, "You better sit down or else I'll stab you". Yeah, that got my attention, straight to the usher person and that person was escorted out.

I'm going to Madison tonight and I'm worried about the stand up, sit down thing there because I believe it happened one other time I saw them at the Overture Center. This time I'm in the bottom circle area, front row. I'm guessing if I stand, I'm going to get jabbed in the back or something will be said. I'm all for standing and sitting at certain moments of shows. I prefer to stand for Wilco but it's all about the type of venue they are playing in.

slingshot_scott: I was sitting in row F on the left and saw that guy punch you. How obnoxious. This was my fourth Wilco show and at the previous three EVERYONE stood up the WHOLE time, so I was really surprised that people sat. Wilco is not a sit-down kind of show, IMO. Besides, they blew the gold leaf off the Peabody Opera House, so why would you want to sit? ;)

I thought it was amazing and much more elaborate then what they were able to do at the Pageant.

Opening with One Sunday Morning was a bold choice and I was really surprised by it but it was great to hear it live.

  3. Just wondering, but did anyone see any mics recording the show?

I was second row balcony and they were all over you if you even remotely brought anything out that looked like a cell phone or camera.

My guess was there was no recording unless it was ok'd by Tweedy's group. I could be wrong.

Thought I would ask. The sound in that theater was amazing. Tweedy even commented on being able to hear everything.

  4. Just wondering, but where will I be able to find some of these recordings from this show? Will they be up on bt.etree.org? or possibly somewhere else? Just wondering, so I can keep my eyes peeled for them. Thanks again to everyone who took the time and effort to record this amazing show. I was completely floored. I'm going through withdrawls much like I do for Ryan shows.

  5. Looking forward to hearing some of these recordings. This place is suppose to have pretty awesome acoustics. They were right. 2nd show for me at the Overture, same section, but this time dead center in the mezz first row. Loved the show. Sounded amazing. They came to rock and I was totally blown away. Haven't seen them in two years, so it was a nice break. Great hearing new songs. I think we heard every song but 3 of them. I have to check the setlist above again. I thought the audience was perfect around me. We sat, some stood towards the middle/end of the show.

Totally blown away. I think they played for a little bit over 2 hours total. Opening band was from Chicago too I think. They were AMAZING. Never heard them before but now I need to hear more. I love that sound. Kind of had this Martin, Medeski and Wood feel to it. Thanks Wilco for a great show!!

  6. one word for finding a hotel "PRICELINE". I use it all the time. Just stayed in downtown Detroit for 2 nights at the Marriot for $80 dollars a night. I got a room at the Holiday Inn near the Loop for $80 dollars one time for a Cubs game. Just got on the train.

Orbitz has rooms near the loop for under 100 bucks. I would definitely use priceline. I think i've used it about 20 times and i've never paid more than $80 bucks for a room and they are always nice rooms. worth a shot.

So is the Riv still smoking? Last time I was there was years ago to see Ryan Adams and it was a smoking venue then. I thought it was a complete dump of a place. My friend was just there to see Phil and Friends and he liked it down on the floor. We sat up in the balcony and smoked joints all night long. Sat like right up near the top in front of the "projection room", not sure if that's what it was or not.

I was kind of scared when I parked a few blocks from the Riv. Walked a couple blocks, pretty sure I was the only white person in that neighborhood, but you suck it up and just be cool. Don't look nervous. I wasn't too thrilled about the sound in the Riv, floor or balcony. We moved from the floor up to the balcony to chill.

  7. My 4th Wico show (Bridge School 2003, Farm Aid 2005, Madison 2006 - Barrymore Theater). I've seen Tweedy twice solo (Milwaukee Pabst 2007 and Orpheum Theater 2006). Great venue, the Overture Center is. It's nice that they don't allow you to bring in drinks into the theater itself. I wish I could of seen the view from the stage because with all the wood and lights going in different angles seemed pretty cool.

I personally enjoyed just sitting in the first balcony, row 3 dead center because I could see everything. No need to get up and dance because the sound was just perfect. It was amazing. The lighting was soooo cool. On and On and On is my favorite new song. Huge stage though, I mean they had like room enough to fit them like 5 more times. Tweedy's voice however seemed a little muffled like someone else said. However, the acoustics were perfect. The wood does a great job creating a great sound in there. Maybe turn it up just a hair like someone said during the show.

I liked how he made fun of the people that were late however they were coming from the very last row I guess. Then the whole sit and stand thing was kinda funny. I liked sitting and enjoying the whole show. Just because I wasn't up and dancing and annoying people trying to see the show behind you, didn't mean I DIDN'T enjoy the show. I enjoyed it just as much as the person downstairs dancing. I did the same thing for a St. Louis Ryan Adams show. I was like second row balcony at the Pageant. Perfect seats to see the light show and the whole band.

Great show!! Can't wait for them to come thru Madison again. They always seem to sell out shows in Madison. The barrymore theater show last year was my favorite show that i've seen by them. However, the all acoustic set at Bridge School was pretty bad ass. Even Adam Duritz from the Counting Crows really enjoyed that set he said. That was the best festival i've ever seen, especially that year.

  8. yes, i'll be there too. pulling in around 6pm. i think i'm gonna make my way over to the new trader joes and pick up some food and snacks. it's open now. love the barrymore. i've seen about 10 to 12 shows there in my lifetime. can't wait to drink some brews at the show.

  9. Tickets went on presale for Ryan this morning at 10am, but i'm sure there is tickets still available. i got mine. it was like 90 some bucks for two tickets. It's a charity event for the Chicago Cubs too, which fuckin' rocks because i'm a diehard fan. 4 hour trip to chi-town for me. i need to find a motel.

Tickets go on sale here on 11/11:

what is great my wife's parents live in madison and that's were i'll be for thanksgiving, so it works out just great.

  10. you can buy them and do will call if you buy them thru the barrymore live site i believe. I did that recently for a Gufs show and had them at will call. i think i've done that for a couple shows. i mean it' kinda cutting it close to mail out tickets, don't you think?

i've been to barrymore a million times and it's very small. i think it holds like 1,000 people. personally i think the acoustics in there aren't all that great. the coolest thing is the stars on the ceiling. i mean it's going to be a sold out show, no doubt about that. $30 bucks a ticket is getting up there though. holy crap. but i just paid $35 to see ryan adams at the house of blues in chicago for january. this time is just a bad time to buy tickets though. PLUS i want to buy john mayer tickets and those fuckers are $40 dollars a pop with mat kearney. damn.

  11. what a great job. man i wish i had the skills to do that. i would love to just photograph concerts at venues every day for the rest of my life. how do i get a job like that?

there was a girl that kept coming down and sitting on the steps taking pictures by me. i know part of her name had "nicole" in it because i saw her press badge. that's all i remember. lol. a couple guinesses in me. yummy.

  12. wow, what a fantastic show!! The Pabst Theater is thee most gorgeous theater in the country I think. I've traveled all around the country going to shows and this place is definately at the top. Maybe the Tennessee Theater in Knoxville, but damn...amazing acoustics.

So, check this out. The idiot "Whoo'er" was sitting exactly in front of me in the second balcony on the right side (that's if your looking at the stage). I so wanted to fuckin' bash him over the head and his buddy next to him. They were not frat boys, they were guys roughly my age around 30. For one thing, I can't believe they sell cans, silo cans to be exact to people so they can drop them on the floor or crush them to make loud noise at this place. I mean it's a great deal, $3 bucks for a PBR and Shiner Bock (love that). These two guys were talking loud like it was a rock concert or something and then crushing cans and making stupid comments all throughout the show. The guy that was "whooing" tried to sing to the songs. man was it annoying. thankfully by the end of the show he wore out and actually tried to apologize to jeff, but it wasn't sincere at all what so ever. he was wasted and so was his friend.

besides all that crap. i guess i sat in the wrong area. what's even funnier is there was 5 of us, 4 tickets in one section and one ticket in this section with this guy. i traded my ticket so i could sit alone, but i got screwed on that deal however...this seat was a lot closer than the other 4.

fantastic show. saw him in madison last year, blew me away. i actually thought that show was a lot longer. this show seemed short, but it was packed with some great songs. thank you to the taper and i hope he can get it out to us as soon as he can.
