  1. I don't have much a problem with the Wilco inclusions.

We could all nitpick the hell out most of it, but the thing that bothers me most about Pitchfork's list is the specific songs they selected for artists who only got one mention. I could list many, but here's a few examples:

    Smog - Teenage Spaceship

Spoon - The Way We Get By

    Duran Duran - The Chauffer

    Replacements - I Will Dare

    Blondie - Atomic

Godspeed You Black Emporor - Storm

It makes me want to read the book, to read WHY they chose those specific songs.

The Godspeed selection is particularly troubling. The song is from an amazing album that has only 4 tracks, and anyone who's heard it would almost surely tell you that the song, "They Don't Sleep Anymore on the Beach" is the standout, not "Storm." It's freaking awesome.

And I didn't see any Vic Chesnutt or Big Star (Sister Lovers qualified) or Chris Bell....

They also listed The Replacements' Bastards of Young... but I agree with your point in principle. There is no way Big Star should be absent from that list.

  2. This album is really growing on me as seems to be the case with most Ryan Adams records. It fits in nicely with his body of work, but it doesn't blow me away like Jacksonville City Nights or Heartbreaker did. I think the Cardinals still have a killer album in them somewhere. They have such a great chemistry live and are incredibly talented musicians.

I'm absolutely loving the first halfish. I'm not a huge fan of the verse on "Natural Ghost" or that weird job app metaphor in "Sink Ships", but things pick up again with "Evergreen". It also just hit me today on about the 5th spin how much I love the guitar break on "Like Yesterday". It has this undeniable laid back fluency and charm.

It's not his best, but I definitely find a lot more to like about this album than I don't like.

  3. 4.7 on Pitchfork today...

while i'd prolly give it a 6.5, the review is pretty spot on for the most part

Every reviewer is entitled to their opinion about the quality of the music, but it seems to me that this review in particular barely said anything about the album itself. There was about one paragraph of substance and the rest seemed like filler. It seemed to be more a critique of Ryan Adams, the human being, than Cardinology itself.

As for me, I like the album. It isn't his best record, but there are definitely some keepers. "Sink Ships", is the one song that I have trouble getting into lyrically. The whole job application thing just seems so out of place.

  4. This is the first oppurtunity I have had to vote in a federal election, so that makes this a slightly more exciting occasion for me than most. However, it does seem ridiculous that this is the 3rd election we'll have had since 2004. Especially considering Stephen Harper's promise for fixed election dates. It's almost as though he's hoping that by calling a quick election, voters won't have a chance to really get into the issues and he can pick up a few extra seats in the process. But I definitely agree that we will end up with another minority government rendered incapable of getting anything done.

I haven't totally decided who I want to vote for yet and a large part of that will be determined by who is running in my riding. Considering that this individual will be my representation in parliment, I'd like to actually see some individual campaigning. I just want to know more about my MP than which party they are running for. That isn't enough to win me over.

That said, I'm leaning towards NDP based on their national platform.

  7. I'm not entirely sure if anyone else on this board is a fan, but Sam Roberts Band has recently released the first single, "Them Kids", from their upcoming album "Love at the End of the World", due sometime this May in Canada at least. These guys are huge in Canada, but have yet to break through to an American audience. They are killer live though, so be sure to check them out if you get the chance. You can listen to the new single at their myspace page: www.myspace.com/samrobertsband.

  8. Great post. Trevor has been one of my favourite players for as long as I can still remember. I can still recall those nights during the '94 run when I'd have to stealthily tune in to 980 to catch the end of those overtime games because my parents had sent me to bed. Linden was the heart and soul of this team. No one could match his grit and determination. He will be missed.

  9. If you're as big a music fan as I'm sure that most people here are, there's a few sites you've got to check out.

    1. Amoeba Records. Located in the historic Haight-Ashbury, this is perhaps the best cd store in the United States. They house over 100 000 titles. Nearly everything you could ever imagine is there. And prices are very reasonable.

    2. Bottom of the Hill. A great little music joint down by the water. Plenty of great acts make their way through every year. I was lucky enough to catch Blitzen Trapper there last summer and it was a blast. I took a look at the artists who have played their before and it included: The White Stripes, Sam Roberts, The Nels Cline Singers, and Wolfmothers. So be sure to check their calendar before you leave.

There's my input. Be sure to take in as much as you can. It's a beautiful city. I wouldn't mind living there someday. Enjoy!

  10. "Don't Worry Baby", by the Beach Boys is the track that first comes to me when I think of pop perfection. From composition to production, the song is flawless. Each layer perfectly complements the other. There are plenty of other Beach Boys selections to chose from as well, but this one particularly strikes me.

  11. Here's a quick rundown of my top ten off the top of my head. In no particular order:

    Blitzen Trapper -Wild Mountain Nation

    Wilco -Sky Blue Sky

    Okkervil River-The Stage Names

    The National -Boxer

Dr. Dog - We All Belong

Spoon -Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

Cold War Kids -Robbers & Cowards

The Shins -Wincing the Night Away

Band of Horses -Cease to Begin

    The White Stripes -Icky Thump

    EDIT:

And here's some other fine albums released this year:

Animal Collective -Strawberry Jam, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss -Raising Sand, Iron & Wine -The Shepherd's Dog, Ryan Adams -Easy Tiger, Josh Ritter -The Historical Conquests of, Radiohead -In Rainbows, and the Polyphonic Spree -The Fragile Army.
