  1. I took this picture of Paul Westerberg a few years back. I loved everything about it: the hair, the sweat -- except it was dark and muddy once you got past the face. (The club didn't allow flash photography.) So I reshot it on polaroid film.

  2. Favorite band from my town: Uncle Tupelo

    From my state: Wilco

I'm glad I didn't have to answer this question nine months ago, when I still lived in Missouri. I guess the obvious one there would be Chuck Berry. I loved The Rainmakers from Kansas City back in the day. And, of course, The Bottlerockets.

They all pale in comparison to the true musical genius that came from Missouri. I give you ... The Ozark Mountain Daredevils!

I couldn't come up with many either. (Nelly?)

    Gene Clark (b. Tipton, MO)

    Nadine

    Son Volt (this counts, right?)

    Fontella Bass

Get Up Kids (shut up. I used to like these guys.)

  3. I got another suggestion:

Tonio K. - Life In the Foodchain

Imagine a sneering Elvis Costello with more of a Los Angeles punk attitude. Kinda like if Elvis C. were Jello Biafra. Jello's outrage with Elvis' melodic sensibility, but a bit harder-hitting.

    Yeah, that's it.

I almost bought this from a place that sells used vinyl, but I thought the price was a little high. It hasn't been reissued yet, has it? Or it was sometime in the early 90s, and a CD copy is just as scarce, right?

  4. Paris 1919 is a favorite of mine. (And I think Cale does the definitive version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." Sorry Jeff Buckley fans.)

I don't think I own any of Lou Reed's post-Velvets work aside from Berlin, and it scares the shit out of me.)

  5. it's definitely great looking and thin, but no way could i use that as my primary laptop...

one usb port (yeah i realize hubs are small these days), only audio out, it's pretty slow with a slow HD that doesn't have all that much storage nor an optical drive.

I am in the market for a new laptop, and will most definitely get a macbook (I use an iMac as well as an older PC laptop aka "the craptop"), but other than the slimness, it's not much of an upgrade.

    I want to like it...

  6. Gmail's been freezing up my browser for about two years now. I've actually gone back to using Yahoo mail as my main email address. It's not perfect either, but at least it opens.

Maybe it's just too early in the morning, but I didn't even notice Gmail had upgraded. It doesn't look any different to me.

  7. Does anyone have this problem? More often than not, especially with comps, iTunes give me the wrong artwork. When I try to clear it and put the right cover in, it doesn't "take;" it still shows the wrong artwork.

  8. Guided By Voices - Do The Collapse (2001)

    Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker (2001)

Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (2002)

    Paul Westerberg - Stereo/Mono (2002)

Tommy Keene - The Merry-Go Round Broke Down (2002)

Holly Golightly - Truly She Is None Other (2003)

Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Great Highway (2003)

Thea Gilmore - Loft Music (2003)

    Sleater-Kinney - The Woods (2005)

Heartless Bastards - Stairs and Elevators (2005)

The Gossip - Standing in the Way of Control (2006)

Teddy Thompson - Separate Ways (2006)

Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood (2006)

Nada Surf - The Weight is a Gift (2006)

Ike Reilly Association - We Belong to the Staggering Evening (2007)

    Bruce Springsteen - Magic (2007)

    '03 and '06 are a little over-represented.

  9. So sad.

Elyse's blog really is good; it's a kind of travelogue/photo essay/expose of the modeling world. She's lived and worked in Asia since being on ANTM and has had quite a bit of modeling success there for a former reality star.

I think she's posted previously that she and Marty had been together since she was in high school; if I recall correctly, he was slightly older and working at a record store when they met.

Yep. Elyse has had quite a bit of post-America's Next Top Model success, at least compared to some of the other girls -- winners included.

Looks like she locked the blog entry, which is probably a good thing until this mess gets settled. I was reading the TWoP boards, and it doesn't seem as though the Shins have issued a statement or anything. That kind of surprises me -- and honestly make me a little suspicious, because most of the online reports were culled from her blog. You think they'd want to do some damage control.
