so i've started band in this, my junior year of college. As of now there's me on guitar and vocals, bass, drums, trumpet, and sax. We're really good as of now, and we've started playing a lot of funky/rock tunes.
I've always loved the "World Record Players" line from Monday, and I think it's not only a great tribute to one of my favorite bands, but it's a sweet name! You can do a lot with it. I was thinking of having our logo be a picture of earth with sunglasses and a chain on it. Maybe he'll be spinning a record too...or maybe half of him will be the earth, the other half a record.
What do you guys think about this? Just curious.

why is conor a troubled boy?
i'm not tryin to be a downer, but Jeff seemed kinda fucked up on Saturday. I mean...he was probably just being Jeff, but he stumbled around quite a bit. and how about when he went up to the mic and was like "sooo..uh....yeahhh..."
typical jeff, but idk.....seemed a little loopy

damn...what a great show that was. i'm still thinkin about it. i think it was even better than mccartney on friday

Oh my goodness, it was such a fun show. Second funnest only to NYE at MSG. Much more enjoyable than Keyspan. Why? I don't know. Crowd was loose and fun and happy, band was tight and fun and happy. Great, long set. It was such a blast! A real party.
I brought my nephew and it could not have been a better first real concert experience for him. No better way to see what it's all about than to have Wilco show you. I feel so, so lucky.
Sorry. (Kidding! But there was a skunk Nels-side towards the end of the show. Are you from the city? Maybe that's what you were smelling.)
haha that was no skunk, and i live in the suburbs. that smell was going on the WHOOLLLEE show

Great show--I was blown away first by Conor Oberst and then by Wilco. Anyone have the setlist?
check the "after the show" forum.
great show! jeff was hilarious

don't bother posting the videos, they're not allowed.
i've seen vids posted here before. i think it should be okay.
i was having a blast from the pit!! sound was perfect!! only thing that sucked was someone kept BEEFING these WICKED FARTS the entire show!!! and i'm definitely not the only one who smelled them. a bunch of people around me were reacting, and i even talked to a few people who also said "i've been smelling them the whole show!" pretty hilarious to look back on but sucked when the show was happening.
i went to this show alone b/c my buddies were too cheap to shell out 30 or 40 for a ticket...man did i have fun!! people around me were great.
jeff was SO FUNNY last night. a few times i had to ask myself if he was messed up on something haha. i remember he came forward to put his leg on the monitor but he lost his balance, stumbled off, and laughed. he kept messing up his hair which was hilarious.
the intro to ITMWLY was hilarious. jeff did the guitar slide and then brought the guitar up to his mouth and kept it going for a while. glenn stood up on his chair was screaming like "come on motherfuckers!!!" and then hopped down to start the song.
also, the electronic midi pad that glenn has wasn't working beffore heavy metal drummer. just like on the live album...it didn't work. jeff was like "wow! this has never happened before!!" two seconds later... "oh wait....no it has happened before." then he was mid sentence when it went off and they started the song abruptly. pretty hilarious!
there were too many funny jeff moments in this show. he did the Tweedy scream like 4 times.

I'll always be a SBS defender. First time I listened to that album i was wowed. lots of great songwriting...right off the bat!! either way? come on guys, there is nothing on the new album that compares to either way. SBS the song is a nice, chill, country-ish song that sounds like older wilco. then you've got the rockers.....germany, hate it here, side with seeds...and of course you are my face, which is a blend of a nice song with a thrashing rock song. awesome vocals and lyrics by tweedy all over.
then i pick up this W(TA), and on the first listen i'm like "wtf? really? THIS is the successor to SBS?"
many of the songs are stale, and i thought that on the first listen unlike SBS. one wing, you and i, country disappeared, i'll fight....seriously what's with those songs? i don't like any of them.
and i'm not trying to just all-out bash the album. i'll continue listening to it (i've listened to it about 6 times before this review). i'm gonna go to the show at Dutchess Stadium and cheer on one of my favorite bands. i'll give the new songs a pleasant listen...but i still think i'm just setting myself up for more disappointment.
where's the nice guitar work? don't tell me bull black nova makes up for an album that lacks a lot of great guitar work. yes, nels plays some beautiful slide stuff, but none of it seems like he took a leap. it's nels playing what he can do in his sleep. it's not bad, but it's not great. when i listened to Impossibly Germany for the first time i remember being so WOWED at that guitar solo, and i had already known how great a guitar player he was.
the album just seems bland to me...SBS all the way!

I got tickets to see Wilco in Wappingers Falls through the presale. With all the charges, it came out to $43.
I went online this morning to get a ticket for Keyspan since I missed the presale, and with all the TM fees it came out to $60. I decided to save money for the summer and opted to only go to the Wappingers Falls one. It's only an hour drive on the nice highway on a Saturday night. I didn't think it'd be worth it to spend the extra cash and hustle to Brooklyn after working all day on a Monday.
But still, are any other money-savers out there amazed by how much of a difference it is with Ticketmaster? One of the only things I hate about concerts these days.

i go through phases with wilco songs, and pretty much a different song becomes my favorite over the course of a few days or weeks. poor places has been my favorite wilco song for quite some time now. i can't get enough of it. the music is absolutely perfect, and there's not much more to be said about how well it captures the mood of tweedy's lyrics. i've come up with a few different scenarios about what tweedy's lyrics are about, but i'm curious as to what everyone else's interpretation of the lyrics are. these are by far in my top 5 for tweedy's lyrics. just amazing.
it's my father's voice trailing off
sailors sailing off in the morning
for the air conditioned rooms
at the top of the stairs
his jaw's been broken
his bandage is wrapped too tight
his fangs have been pulled
and I really wanna see you tonight
there's bourbon on the breath
of the singer you love so much
he takes all his words from
the books you don't read anyway
his jaw's been broken
his bandage is wrapped too tight
his fangs have been pulled
and I really wanna see you tonight
someone ties a bow
in my backyard to show me love
my voice is climbing walls
smoking and I want love
my jaw's been broken
my heart is wrapped in ice
my fangs have been pulled
and I really wanna see you tonight
it makes no difference to me
how they cried all over overseas
when it's hot in the poor places tonight
I'm not going outside
they cried all over overseas and it makes no difference to me
when it's hot in the poor places tonight
I'm not going outside

[rant]there were two girls in front of me who were constantly sitting down mid show to roll joints and would not stop smoking. i dont have anything against pot smoking but this was getting distracting. people were constantly pushing me out of the way to get beers. the two dudes next to me got into a fight and had to be restrained. and this was all about 5 rows back. not to say that i didnt have a great time but i wish the shows werent this way. i wish everyone could just stop what they are doing and listen to the concert that they paid a ton of money for. i think Jeff seemed to notice the energy and even pointed out that "they sang a lot louder in Atlanta." maybe it was the large venue, maybe it was just the new yorkers, but it was sort of frustrating.[rant/]
ok thats enough about that
-poor places>kidsmoke was amazing, i like the way they do spiders these days
-hummingbird was another highlight
-new songs sound amazing live
-per the usual nels' freakout at the end of handshake drugs melted my face to the floor
-it was cool to hear kamera
the band really seems to be at the top of their game and sound extremely tight
hopefully ill see them again in Boston
hey man i was standing right by you. my friend was the one who came between the two dudes who were gonna fight. i was the one in the bandana. i had a GREAT time at the show and i was completely blown away by Wilco's live show. long time fan and my first time seeing them, i was really happy.

WHO CAPTURED THIS?!
Naming my band "World Record Players"
in Someone Else's Song
Posted
just an update on this topic:
the whole world "logo" thing really isn't a logo. we'll decide on a logo later. for now, i just want to have a poster behind us when we play gigs so people know the name. my friend here at SU is an art major and drew me a really cool picture of the earth playing a trippy keyboard....it's not our logo but a cool picture. yes it's a literal interpretation, but since we're in our early stages it'll help people remember the name.
so it has been two months now with this name and people really dig it. i can't say that it's the most memorable for people, but everyone gives me the SAME reaction when i tell them the name. they're always like, "huh? oh....wow i like that." or something like "....hey that's cool." people think it's neat.
we had our second gig last night and it ROCKED!! people really like us. i've got some videos that i'm eventually gonna get up on the net so you can all check it out. i think we'll stick with this name for now unless we find a better one. it's pretty catchy i think.
