  1. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club opened, and as usual they were superb. Shame they had to cut their setlist short since they were the opening band.

I think B.R.M.C. are one of the better live bands out there right now. I've been a big fan of theirs since first record and anytime I've taken somebody to a show of their that didn't know them they have always become fans after.

I'll admit I don't own any of the KOL's records but do like every song I've ever heard from them. I saw them as openers on the last U2 tour, on the first day of the new tour, and they weren't ready for how different the sound adjustments were in playing a large indoor arena for first time so their set didn't sound good at all.

I wanted to go to this show, especially w/BRMC opening, in San Diego tonight but I have relatives in town and duty calls!

  2. Been big fan of R.E.M. since early days and seen every tour of theirs since 84 Reckoning Tour.

I fall into the boat of liking R.E.M.'s records with Bill Berry in the band and my least favorites are the 3 Post-Berry records and I do agree that "Around The Sun" was the first CD of thiers that after one listen I wasn't too impressed with. There have been well document interviews in recent memory that highlighted what Bill Berry brought to the writing and recording process of the band so I won't delve too deeply into on this post but one thing that really stood out to me was when MTV (when they still played music!) had an "UP" live music release show where they interviewed the 3 remaining band members and asked "What was different with Bill Berry not there in the Studio with you?" and either Buck or Mills said Bill was the band member that after writing a new song would always ask them "Where is the hook to the song?" Obviously, "Up" and "Reveal" missed that built in band member "edit" process to tighten up songs, and Buck/Mills obvious adoration to Beach Boys creative, melody music process were free to explore those avenues, especially on "Reveal". "ATS", Buck said it best that they had a great background to make a good political/reactive record, but it didn't come out that way once they recorded the Album because "it dragged on too ong and they thought too much".

So it's great to see them get back to "basics" and make live music with guitar/bass/drums like they did in the I.R.S. days.

Go to youtube.com and type in "R.E.M. Dublin 2007" and there will be many live videos of the new songs they are working on. Besides sounding like a guitar driven "live" band again, it was extremely great to hear Mike Mill's background harmony vocals on ALOT of the new songs, which I always thought was the secret weapon to the early records, (think "Pretty Perusuason")

Anyhow, don't mean to sound negative on this post about post-Berry recordings, but I'm a true longtime fan and just wanted to give honest opinion from somebody who has been with them since the beginning....and I still went and saw them multiple times that last 3 tours (twice during UP, twice during greatest hits, and twice during AOS).

Can't wait for the newer Rocker from the boys from Athens :guitar

  3. In light of what looks like a kick-ass show Sunday night (9/2) in Denver, when they busted out Company in my Back, it occurred to me that they haven't played these three very much lately.

I am lucky to have seen the second to most recent full band version of Wishful Thinking (7/16/06 Pines). They brought it back at the Warsaw (6/26/07).

As for Hell is Chrome, it hasn't been played since the first Auditorium show last fall (11/24/06).

What are everybody's thoughts? I think they'll be gems when performed live in the future.

I've seen Wilco now three times since AGIB came out and unfortunately have not heard live yet "Wishful Thinking" or "Company in My Back", which are two of my favorite songs on that recording. I did see "Hell is Chrome" live at the 2nd Minneapolis show back in 2004 and it was pretty amazing.

Just saw them in San Diego was hoping they play one or the other, especailly W.T., but to no avail :ohwell

I wish I could take a week off work and follow them around for a few gigs in a row to get as many songs to hear. I've just been kinda unlucky in that the 3 shows I've been to I have gotten alot of the same "older songs" at each one, ie "Misunderstood" has been played at all three shows. Seeing this tour setlist to see they are mixing in "Red Eyed and Blue/I Got You" and "Outta Sight" in the shows, I would have replaced Misunderstood for one of those old surpirses in San Diego if I had my "wish:

    ...Wishful thinking... :thumbup

  4. Funny. But jcdawg couldn't have been THAT drunk, if he got the setlist mostly right.

So, if hardly anyone in San Diego recognized TFA, well, it makes you wonder...

Regarding "Drunk", that was in reference to when I did my post last night at 2 a.m.-ish after coming back from the show and heading to neighborhood bar til closedown. Once the show started, I didn't leave my seat, despite urgings of my buddy to go up and get more beers - I was not going to miss any of the show, especially from 8th row!

Not knowing the song from "AM" by title, I'll admit that I got into WILCO when I purchased "Being There" when it came out in 94. Fortunately, I finally picked up AM at Ameoba Records in San Fran. the day before I was going to see them open up for R.E.M. at Shoreline the Fall of 2003. At that show, they played "Box Full of Letters" and "Should Have Been in Love". So the song sounded familiar but I don't listen to "AM" as much as I do the record from Being There on... If I had to pick a song from AM I would've been stocked if they would have chose my personal favorite " Shouldn't Be Ashamed"

Anyways, did anybody else notice the Professional PokerPlayers sitting in the middle of the pit in the 8th row, most notable was Howard Lederer.who is always on ESPN/FoxSports.

  5. Here's the sober version. ;)

Also....Too Far Apart is off Wilco's first album. The highly underappreciated one.

Thanks for cleaning up my mess on the setlist!!! Now recovered from the post show fog and wishing I could go see them again this tour before it's over. I was hoping for Sunken Treasure, and a few more "oldies", especially now that I've read the West Coast setlists and saw in Vancouver they got "Red Eyed and Blue/I Got You" during their encore, but getting Misunderstood into Spiders was amazing and there can be nothing more said about ending a San Diego picture perfect summer night outdoors with Cali Stars/HMD!

And for all you parents out there keeping score, I had a designated driver last night!

  6. My guess is that new song you are thinking of is "Too Far Apart"?

You are correct! This tour I purposely decided not to follow the setlist of the West Coast leg to be "surprised" by what they played and it appears that is the name of the new song I didn't know.

Besides the new songs, the two songs that it was the first time seeing live were "Hesitating Beauty" and "Via Chicago" which was SO COOL!

  7. Just back from another great performance from WILCO. Lucked out and got 8th row seats in pit during pre-sale which were the best seats I've had at a gig, this being my 7th time seeing them live:

Just got back from bar after the show so I'll try to take a shot at setlist but sure I'll be wrong on order and will soon be corrected by persons in attendance that are ALOT sober than I am right now(or listening to live broadcast on FM 94.9 = Best Radio station in the land!!!)

Sober People, please correct me where I'm wrong, I'm sure I missed a song in the first encore between Late Greats/Misunderstood

Notes: Alot of people in the Pit, where the pre-sale tickets probably ended up being were LAME, sitting down the whole time, even J.T. mentioned that this was a "mellow crowd" at one point. I stood whole time and had people yell "sit down" which I rightlfully ignored. Go sit up in the nose bleeds if you want to sit down in the pit, jerky!
