  1. Handy Park, Beale Street. Lips are trying for Guinness book record for 8 shows in 24 hours, currently held by Jay Z...the 'tour' started in Memphis today at 4pm, introduced by the mayor...amazing, short set, including jelly, ego tripping, a new song "youre a weird chick", ya ya song, and first time ever performance of summertime off yoshimi. A great show, just thought youd all like to know about it. tour ends in new orleans in 24 hours.

  2. The 330 is a full hollowbody and the 335 is a semi-hollow. Major difference. The trapeze seems to be more common on a full hollow like a 330, but I don't think you can conclude that trapeze on a guitar shaped like a 335 = 330.

    Ahhhh...so 330 is more like a casino...make sense. J

  3. Heritage headstocks are shaped differently than Gibsons. That's definitely a Gibson in the photo. I'd LOVE to have an older 335. That might be my "if I win the lottery" guitar.

This thread is the first time I've ever heard of a 555, but I don't know all that much about the Heritage brand.

Somebody check me, but I'm pretty sure a 335 with a trapeze is a 330...one example I know of, Ed o'brien from radiohead plays one.

  4. I have a Boss blues driver that I love. I use it mostly as a boost, but I am totally dependent on it in my set up. I have had it for over two years. Now it seems to be broken, I have tried it using both an ac adapter and a fresh battery.

I was just wondering is this something that might be an extremely easy/cheap fix, or should I just bite the bullet and buy a new one?

    Thanks for your help!

The input jack functions as the circuit switch when a cable is plugged into it. Were the jack bad, it would be a relatively easy fix/replacement. I have done it on a tr-2. Aside from that possibility, it is probably time to go shopping. Sry man. J

  5. Most budget condensers sound like nails on a chalk board. You can, however, get a dynamic for cheap that can sound good for vocals. I have had great success with both the Shure SM7 (the unofficial Tweedy mic) and the EV RE20. Both can be found in the $300-$400 range. I also love my EV RE10 which doesn't look like much but sounds pretty classy on some voices. I see those for $100 or less all the time.

    I whole-heartedly endorse this post. J

  6. Happy to help...just want make sure I understand your last post there...

That board pic of mine was from over a year ago, and is a little more simplified now. I only run one line for guitar...If I go from one guitar to another, I just unplug and plug the new one in. On gigs where I play electric and acoustic, the electric goes thru the effects on the board to my amp, and I run the acoustic thru the exciter, and sometimes a delay, to the PA. The exciter works well on it's own, off board, as a DI ( as would the LR Baggs PADI I mentioned). The Baggs m1a has a battery and preamplifier built in, so adding an external preamp is simply for sound shaping. yea, try the m1a, it's pretty unique, the website has good info. M1a. Here's a review I found very helpful: Review linky

Btw, couple of nice guitars you use. Seagulls=terrific value. J

  7. Heya man...I have dealt with this issue for years, as generally more of an acoustic player than an electric...how ever this various a lot because I'm in a band, and choices change from song to song...

For me to really advise, you d have to remind me of what guitar we are talking about, what kind of gigs you play and whether you are solo.

That asked, what I have found the best sounding and most flexible set up is a LR Baggs m1a sound hole pickup (very good)...if you feel youd like more tonal variance, that pick up has a stereo jack with which you can add a second source. I mix my Baggs with a sound board transducer, and run the dual source mix to a PA. some artists that do this kind of set up live are Jeff tweedy, Beck, and Thom yorke. Even Neil young was using a Baggs M1a on an old guild on his last tour, and you know how he is with sound. The baggs is the best sound hole pickup I've ever used ( better than a sunrise even) because it picks up the top and body of the guitar ( not just strings), and is feedback resistant. a lot of people i know swear by the LR Baggs PADI for sound shaping, and I've had good results with the Aphex acoustic exciter and various tube preamps to warm up the sound.

I have had good results with fishman in the past, so i m guessing the issues you are having are more subjective to the sound, I hope the above suggestion is what you are looking for...

I'm currently in the final stages of refurbishing (gently) my granddad's 1961 Les Paul (really an SG body type). Had to re-wind one of the humbucker coils and a few other bits of this and that, will re-post when I get some pics ready.

I find the toughest thing for me when it comes to gear is really more on the acoustic-guitar side of things. I go back and forth in shows (probably 3/4 electric, 1/4 acoustic) and I always find that my acoustic gear is just so shit-tacular as to sound much worse by comparison. Do you guys have any tips for what are sort of must-have electronics to use for rolling an acoustic through a PA? I have a Fishman setup in the guitar and it sounds OK but everything just always sounds so cold to me when it comes to amplified acoustics. I think straight-piezo is the worst for this, so I blend it with the Fishman Aura sound to a point where it sounds OK.

I think ideally I'd have some amazing microphone and play into that, then modify the sound a bit with vocal tools. But for the small places I tend to play, it's always a feedback disaster plus I play standing up and tend to move around a bit too much for regular-miking.

So more or less, please help with some tips for acoustic guitar gear that can help unfreeze that sound.

  8. I'm curious what's in everyone's mic cabinet...

    My current collection: shure sm7b, ev re20, akg 414,(2) akg 5900c, akg d112, akg c900, akg perception 220, (3) akg d3800s, blue encore 100 and 200s, shure 58s, shure 300 ribbon mic

I'm saving for a blue mouse...

I use grace m101 preamps mostly

    How bout y'all?

  9. Hit the store today, ended up getting the RME Fireface 800 and Cubase 6. Now the fun begins, learning how to use this stuff. I'm thinking I might get another computer just to use for recording. My current one is pretty loaded up with stuff. Might be better to have one dedicated to one thing.

Oh, nice unit...I wish I'd gone that route, rather than the persons firestudio I have now...

  10. My main electric is a 1961 guild t50 arch top, and I use .11s with a wound G, usually dean Markley or d'adarrios

My acoustics are a 1964 guild m20 and a Martin SWOMGT, both strung with custom lights (heavy bottom .11s)

My fender jazz bass always has flatwounds

I play six string banjo with silk and steels

the gauge on acoustics and electrics is relative to playing style and tone...I kind of disagree with lamrods assertion that on acoustics it doesn't matter much....for example, I bend the hell out of string on my acoustics. Also, gauge and tension are hugely important on smaller bodied acoustics, like mine, or like tweedy's, for example...any prolonged period strung with .13s and you could have some real structural issues.

Heavy gauge strings wear frets and bridgeplates down faster, as well...just sayin'.

FWIW. I never met a coated string I could stand...that said, I'm always willing to try a new recommendation.

  11. OK...Ill start by saying I do A LOt of audio engineering. I cant answer many questions without knowing your mic choices, interface, etc...fill us in. How many mics were used on drums? Did you go direct on the bass?? How did you mic the piano and guitar? How do you plan on doing vocals? All these need to be answered before I can give you much.

A few generic tips, after listening to your mixes, cool stuff reminds me a bit of Nick Drake...take them however you want. its not all that bad a mix, but you are right it sounds muddy...

Kick: Id add a gate, eq out everything over 350 hz, and soft compress it with a quick attack and release...pan it center, dip eq around 220hz (a horrible freq for drums)...

Snare: Eq out everything under 200 hz, add some highs...soft compress it with quick attack and release

Toms/overheads: need some light reverb, eq in some highs, hard pan them (highhat shouldnt be in the middle over the snare and kick)...i like to compress cymbals

Bass: It lacks punch and sounds like it was miced (i prefer Di or a DI/mic blend)...you clear it up some by using a limiter, compression with a slower attack and release, and some eq tweeks around 1500-1800hz, drop the ultra lows (under 100hz)...the bass does not have to be centered...i like it about 10 o'clock, and doubled...

Guitars: sounds like there are two...the acoustic needs compression and some eqing to bring out the highs...the electric needs more compression and some reverb, maybe a plate type...

    Piano: something is wrong here

    Samples: are fine for now...

Dropping things out to add more, and panning is going to help you even more after the sounds are processed a bit...have fun. j

  12.

Speaking of a VCer's live performance on youtube: has anyone ever done a thread for that?

That's something that I'd like to see, instead of hearing music. I understand that most youtube videos would not do most bands justice, but sometimes it's nice to see how a band or solo artist controls the stage.

Freaking great idea! I'd be in ti it...might even have a couple to throw out there. Start it up. J

  13. Sounding pretty good so far, nice vocal harmonies. Really digging Killer African Bees.

Just have had the time to give a little scan, but it sounds good so far.

    Looking forward to really listening.

    Congrats on the release!

EDIT: How's Bandcamp working out for you? I just joined.

    many thanks yall...we are excited.

Bandcamp has worked well for us for a couple years, but they JUST changed the model, and now our monthly downloads have been limited...however, that aside, it's utterly terrific for a site i don't pay anything for...we are using Bandcamp.com exclusively until our CDBaby and iTunes goes thru...the ability to print and distribute free and discounted download codes is a real nice feature, and the stats tool is very useful as well...

  14. Best thread I never read...

Mods: perhaps we need another sub forum that deals specifically with non-wilco musical or artistic pursuits...I would frequent it and imagine that would lessen the issues with certain posts here...j

  15. the Cathedral is the nifty stereo version cousin of the HG...both by EH...check it out... EH

and this too van amp reverb

personally, i prefer true spring reverb on fender amps...a new accutronics verb tank is around $50 i think, easy install...if thats what the problem is with the amp...

  16. Apologies...i think i actually misinterpreted what the OP meant (I assumed his street teaming was being done elsewhere)...and was trying to encourage him in general...

In respect to the site rules, I dont personally think this is the proper forum to self promote, unless it happens to come up in conversation. Promotion is quite prevalent on VC, a few nameless members being especially vocal...but most folks here seem to be cool with it...
