  1. I was under the impression that Christian was an avatar...but as Locke has resurrected, so it becomes apparent that Christian is 'undead'. Christian did appear to Jack in LA...but he was he just a vision?

One thing I noticed in that scene was that the smoke alarm was going off when Jack saw his father in the hospital - they even made a point of showing Jack climb on a chair to turn it off. Of course, this made me think that Christian was a manifestation of the black smoke. I don't know if Hurley's visions of Charlie and Eko are the same thing, or if they are just all in his head - Hurley playing chess with an invisible Eko seems to suggest that they are just hallucinations.

After re-watching episode 7, I'm starting to think that it's Jack who is the important one. Boone did tell Locke that he was supposed to bring the family back together - was he talking about the Shepards? Ben and Widmore just know that they can manipulate Locke by telling him that he's special, but Jack is not so easily manipulated. Jack needs something to fix, so they tell him that everyone on the island will die if he doesn't go back. He is visited by his dead father, Locke tells him Christian says hi, etc. I think that maybe Jack will be the next leader - but first he has to make the journey from man of science to man of faith. There was great importance placed on the need for all of them to go back, but when Ben showed up with just Jack and Sun, all of a sudden it wasn't so important that they all be there - which makes me think that the one they need is already there.

Another possibility is that Sun is more important than I previously thought. "Bring(ing) the family back together" could refer to her, Jin and Ji-Yeon. Did anyone notice Ben's face when Locke told him Jin was still alive? I think that was a major game changer for Ben. Maybe there is some kind of prophesy or island mythology about a child conceived on the island. That seems a pretty important point - as far as we know, Ji-Yeon is the only child conceived on the island. I don't know how they'll get Ji-Yeon to the island, but Sun doesn't seem too concerned about leaving her behind.

Widmore seemed to want Locke alive; after all, he had plenty of opportunity to kill him between Locke's landing in Tunisia and having Abbadon drive him all over the world. Ben twice made the attempt to take Locke's life and ultimately succeeded. So I guess the real question is whether or not John did indeed have to die.

Here's a thought I just had...Ben said that he couldn't return to the island after turning the wheel, let's give him the benefit of the doubt here and say he's telling the truth. But maybe the "rules" allow your return if you bring back the body of your successor. Ben would have to bring back Locke's body, and Widmore (if he did move the island) would have to bring back Ben's body.

Now that I think about it, Widmore is lying about being the leader of the Others, unless by "my people" he means the Dharma Initiative. I’m pretty sure that he’s the one behind DI – we know that he sent the freighter crew and Keamy refers to the secondary protocol, which has a Dharma logo on the cover (the Orchid, I think). He also has some connection with Ms. Hawking and the Lamppost Station. I think his exile occurred during the Purge, when Richard and Ben gassed the DI. Twenty years later he spots the island when Charlie turned off the jamming signal and sends the freighter crew to capture Ben. He can't kill Ben while Ben is on the island, anymore than Ben could have killed Locke on the island - but we know that, off island, he and Sun have "common interest" - killing Ben Linus.

If Ms. Hawking is working for Widmore, then he knows about the event windows - only he needs Ben's body to return to the island. Ben, in turn, needs Locke's body to return to the island. It was Richard that first told Locke that he had to die - maybe this is to ensure Ben's return to the island, I think Widmore returning would be a bad thing for Richard/the island. When Ben heard the name Eloise Hawking, he realized that they are entering the endgame and he didn't have much time - he has to kill Locke and get back to the island before Widmore kills him.

    Edited for clarity.

  2. Here's something that has been puzzling me this season: The Oceanic 6 have been off the island for 3 years. After 3 years of time-jumping on the island, wouldn't everyone left behind have died from the temporal displacement thing? Or are 3 years off island just a moot point if you're on island time? Or does it have to do with when (if?) in time the O6 get back to the island? Maybe having something to do with the 70 hours that Ben has? Ack.

I was thinking that the "event window" that Ms. Hawking had calculated was the time when the island time matched up to the O6 time. Like, in 70 hours the island will jump to a time 3 years later, so the Losties time coincides with the Oceanic 6 time. I wonder if she anticipated the second turning of the wheel though...

  3. What tis the deal with the use of philosopher and scientific names for these characters: Jeremy Bentham, John Locke, Rosseau, Richard Alpert, Rousseau, Faraday? If there were more examples of the latter, I would say it was a religion/philosophy/faith vs. reason/science.

    Kelvin, Minkowski, Hawkings...

  4. Regarding the nosebleeds, does anyone else think that they could be related to 'the sickness'?

Interesting...now you've got me wondering about the sickness.

We know that Danielle's crew had the "sickness", but she didn't say what it was - only that she had to kill them. But Rousseau is pretty crazy.

Others with nosebleeds: Desmond and Minkowski - theirs was a result of their consciousness skipping through time. Maybe this had to do with being exposed to a strong electromagnetic force. Desmond had extended exposure to the electromagnetic anomaly in the hatch (we know that the force is strong in there from what happened to Jack's key in Season Two). Minkowski could have been exposed to something in the communications room, or at some other point. They were both affected by the consciousness jumps after entering or leaving the island on the wrong bearing. Desmond in Frank's helicopter, and Minkowski when he tried to get to the island. This symptom of the sickness can be cured by finding a constant.

Now Charlotte, Miles and Juliet have nosebleeds. Daniel says that it has something to do with the duration of exposure to the island- I think this shows that Miles and Charlotte were born on the island - but Juliet has been on the island for something like 3 years. I don't think she was born on the island, she's just had a longer exposure than the Losties. And the time jumps, like entering/leaving on the wrong bearing, are causing the nosebleeds. Constants would do no good in their case, they are skipping through time, not just their consciousness. I'm sure Daniel would tell Charlotte she needed a constant if it were that easy.

We also see Goodspeed with a nosebleed, but I think that was a result of the gas that Ben released. I wonder if Rousseau's science team were studying exotic matter or electromagnetic anamolies and they had some previous exposure - they almost certainly entered the island on the wrong bearing. Maybe Jin's appearance in young Rousseau's timeline effectively "exposed" her crew to the time jumps and the sickness. But I wonder why Rousseau didn't die...

Remember when Ben told Richard and the Others to go to the Temple - that that was the only safe place on the island? We thought that Ben was talking about them being safe from the Freighter crew, but I think the Temple is why Richard and the Others aren't affected by the time jumps. As much as I love the Orchid, I think the Temple is where Locke and Sawyer should be heading.

    Can't wait for tonight's episode!

  5. Regarding Jin: We are to now believe that he somehow jumped of of the freighter in the seconds between when we last saw him on the deck and the explosion. Then he furthermore managed to safely navigate away from the fiery wreckage, maintain his sanity and strength enough to start swimming towards the island and then be within the radius of the island shifting. Lastly, he's been floating around off of the coast for who knows how long in actual time with no food or water and has experienced all of the time jumps that the other Losties have experienced. Did I leave anything out?

Maybe the Island still needs him. Michael wasn't allowed to die until his work was done. Locke was shot in the stomach. Desmond was involved in an explosion that blew all of his clothes off but didn't leave a scratch on him.

  6. I thought it was from the time travel. Remember what happened to the rats Daniel was experimenting with at Oxford? They couldn't remember how to get through the trail to get the cheese after all the time travel and then they eventually died.

I thought Daniel had just built the maze that morning, the rat had never been through the maze before, but she knew exactly where to go.

  7. I absolutely LOVE this album. I just listened to it again while cleaning the house and I can't find a single flaw. Unfortunately, I had bought it just before my computer was obliterated by a tree so now I only have it on my ipod. Stereo/Mono has long been my favorite, but 49:00 is definitely gaining ground...my pick for best album of 2008

  8. After watching all of just about all of the David Attenborough's series over the past couple months, I started this the other night: planet_earth.jpg

I can't recommend it enough, especially if you have even the slightest interest in nature. The budget was over $25 million and it shows. There's lots of beautiful, intimate scenes throughout - rarely seen snow leopards at their den, an aerial view of a wolf pack on the hunt, polar bear babies romping around and tons of gorgeous scenery. I thought I'd be disappointed after all of Attenborough's "Life of..." series, but I am very impressed. And a bonus - David Attenborough narrates the series! I love that man.

I think that in this age of suburbs and technology we are so divorced from nature that we tend to ignore it unless it's some kind of catastrophe. I'm lucky enough to live a a place that has an abundance of State Parks, from beaches to mountains, and though living in the redwoods has its inconveniences, it is a majestic, wondrous place. This film reminded me of that, and just how nice it is to get up at sunrise and walk while watching the birds and deer and coyote and the sunlight through the changing maple leaves.

Got this from Netflix and am going to watch it tonight:

I'm a huge Herzog fan and I can't wait. :dancing

  9. I really enjoyed Empire Falls. Straight Man was pretty good too.

    Just finished:

Wow. I've tried reading Faulkner before, and I could never really get into it, but this time it clicked. Have you ever read a book where the characters and the landscape and the telling stick with you and that's all you can think about for days? I can't wait to read more...

Just started (because I have to wait for The Sound and the Fury at the library):

Here's the link to the article that made me pick this one up, in case anyone is interested:

  10. Can't let this languish on page 2. Even though I'm a huge PW fan, I wouldn't have known about this album if it wasn't for VC!

I read earlier that this is Amazon's top MP3 sale - the closest Paul will ever get to a #1 - and he deserves it, I just love how he bangs this stuff out in his basement, as frenetic as it is - it's a glimpse into the process for me. For the past 10 years he's been putting out the stuff that runs through his head, and I, for one, love the ADD nature of it. The thing I love about his songwriting most is the phraseplay - "tears rolling up our sleeves" or "it's a wonderful lie" or "something in my life is missing - by a mile". And I really really love the new song about his dad, it's so raw and painful it gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.

  11. And does anyone else think that if they get Locke back to the Island then he'll be resurrected again, just like JC?

Yes - in a way. Christian Shepard was brought to the island in a coffin - he has now apparently usurped Jacob, he's in Jacob's cabin and speaking for him. Locke will be brought back to the island in the coffin, and he will usurp Christian and become the new Jacob - whatever he is. I think that Jacob was also resurrected by the island - maybe he was on the Black Rock - and until 815 crashed, there was no threat to his power. Ben seemed disturbed that Jacob instructed them to move the island, he said something like "It's very dangerous" and later, while turning the wheel, "I hope you're happy, Jacob". But Locke did not talk to Jacob, Christian was the one who told him to move the island. I also noticed in the episode where Hurley stumbles on the cabin and looks through the window, he sees Christian (not Jacob) sitting there - suddenly Hurley sees an eye looking back at him, and after rewatching this scene, I'm pretty sure it's Locke's eye. I think this is a hint that we will see Locke inhabiting the cabin in future episodes. Charlie's warning to Jack (via Hurley) - "You're not supposed to raise him", I don't think refers to Aaron, but to Locke.

Also, when Walt said that he was visited by Jeremy Bentham, I think Locke was visiting him for the same purpose that Richard Alpert visited Locke as a child. Speading out certain objects and asking Walt which belong to him. There seems to be a pattern - Ben is important to the Others because he is an intermediary for Jacob. Now Jacob has lost power to Christian and Locke is the new intermediary (Ben tells Locke before he turns the wheel "(The Others) are ready, willing and able to tell you what they know and obey your every word"). Once Locke's body is brought back to the island, he will take Christian's place and Walt will be the new conduit - or maybe Aaron.

Or, I guess the Locke in the coffin could just be a clone - like the bunny from the original Orchid video.

I also think Desmond and Penny will return to the island and could be the bodies in the cave in Season 1. Ben tells Widmore that he is going to kill Penny, Widmore's reply is "You have to find her first". We know that the person who moves the island can "never come back", according to Ben, so the one place for Penny to be safe is the island. Didn't Penny first find the island when Desmond turned the failsafe key and the sky turned purple? I think that the island moved at that point - and there was a little bloop on the screen in Antarctica or wherever and Penny got a phone call? So maybe when Ben moves the island and the sky turns colors there's another bloop on the screen that locates the island. Anyway, however they find it, Desmond and Penny go back to the island and live in the caves.

  12. Tonight:

Can anyone recommend a good TV series? That's really all I've been in the mood for lately, but I have no idea where to go next. I've been through all the HBO shows, Lost, Twin Peaks and have just finished Freaks & Geeks. Any other good ones?

  13. What a great episode!

When Locke hands Ben the book (Philip K. Dick?) in the beginning, and, in response to Ben's comment on already having read it, Locke says "Maybe you'll catch more the second time around" or whatever...that's what this episode felt like to me. But, I guess a lot of it rests on the assumption that all the flash forwards take place somewhat close to each other.

I'm wondering how many of the "Oceanic 6" are still around in the flash forwards? Jack testified that only 6 survived the crash, but Kate was a hero and fed them etc., and "would have saved the other two..."? Does this mean that six survived the initial crash (according to what is known to the rest of the world), but two of those six "died" on the island, so only four were rescued? Jack, Kate, Hurley and someone else? I'm sure if Sayid would have been one of the 6, he wouldn't be a very successful hitman, or whatever he is - he'd be recognized everywhere.

So, I'm sure we can assume the "him" Kate had to get back to in the Season 3 closer was Aaron and not Sawyer. Jack can lie with a straight face. Ben sees a power vacuum and is heading straight for it (I get the feeling that the whole Miles/Ben blackmail scene was somehow orchestrated by Ben).

  14. Do you truly think that's why he "had to drown?" :frusty

Well, the executive producers have said that Charlie's arc was over, and they and Dominic Monaghan agreed that they should kill him off.

  15. I'm almost over Jack, enough is enough.

I really dislike Jack too. I love how this show always keeps you guessing, not just with the mystery of the island and the Others, but also the characters that we think we know. The characters are never stagnant (except for maybe Charlie, which is why he had to drown), but what's so good about the writing that nothing is out of character. Jack was a arrogant jerk from the very beginning, but he was the one who stepped up in a time of crisis and was seen as a hero until things died down a little - I think us viewers become less enchanted with him at about the same rate as the other characters - it gave me such joy to hear Rose say something to the effect of "If you say 'live together die alone' one more time I'm going to punch you in the face". Anyway, great show...did someone say that these are available to watch immediately after they air on ABC.com?

A couple years ago someone here recommended A Secret History and I read it twice in a row. I just started this one yesterday and am loving it as much, if not more, than her previous book. I'm probably just a sucker for offbeat coming of age stories, but the best fiction I've read in the past year have all been in line with this theme...Lethem's Fortress of Solitude, Atwood's Cats Eye and now this one.

  17. I don't post much, but I just have to contribute to this thread. I watched the whole 3 seasons in two months and I can't wait for it to start again. Ben is my favorite character - I hope Season 4 delves into his story a bit more. Just 6 more days...
