  3. The thing with Wilco shows is that they are all very good. If you close your eyes and only listen to the music... For me there was not that much difference between Groningen, Brussels 1 and Brussels 2. Except for the crowd.

During 'Brussels 1' the crowd kept pouring in until IATTBYH, which was quite annoying. I decided to go to one of the balconies, where I saw a great show with a very good setlist. The pick of the evening was the absolutely great response to Impossible Germany. It even drowned the first 10 seconds of Sky Blue Sky.

The second evening was more laid back and like one great encore (indeed Jeff's vocals weren't...). Glad to hear finally Handshake Drugs. Walken, The Late Greats and I'm A Wheel I even heard too often. And what's the deal with Capitol City? I think Wilco has seen (and heard) too much bicycles in Belgium and the Netherlands. There were even bicycle bell ringing sounds at the beginning of Handshake Drugs! Did anyone notice?

Belgium had to wait a long time for seeing Wilco again and it showed, the crowd being enthusiastic the whole show, twice. On the train ride home just one song lingering in my mind: Laminated Cat. And what a great city Brussels is! Jeff mentioned it also. He didn't talk a lot and well, if he starts talking at least you know Jesus, Etc. is coming up.

And in the end you only feel quite sad knowing that you will see Wilco not for a long time. And in the end for comfort, Sir Paul will visit The Netherlands and Belgium and I have got my ticket for Rotterdam. Maybe Paul will sing a Wilco song? Probably not.

For those, enjoy the rest of the European tour!!

  4. I really would like to know your second thoughts, because I think it was a great show (I've seen worse, even in the Netherlands/i.m.h.o. Eindhoven, 2009). Maybe Jeff wasn't focussed as he used to be (forgot two times the lyrics of Radio Cure, was sometimes too late with his vocals). But how about that very long and extra applause for Nels (encouraged by Jeff) after Impossible Germany?

I like the OSM>AoA (leaving out Poor Places). Great hearing Laminated Cat, an acoustic Spiders and I Am Always in Love for the first time. ALTWYS was meaner than ever (Jeff uses different guitar now).

    See you in Brussels!

  5. If I could see McCartney and Wilco in a single night, my head might explode. The universe could implode into itself and I'd be a happy man.

How about seeing Wilco AND Paul in March? It's possible for the Dutch and Belgium Wilco-/Paul fans! So a little explosion in the head?

    25. Outtasite (Outta Mind) (with a sort of extra coda)

Monday 14th, my 14th show and my first Black Moon.

Again, a great, great show, which I enjoyed very much. Nice small venue. And what an encore!

Capitol City: crowd laughed at the sound of bicycle bells (this is the Netherlands!), Jeff had to laugh too.

Again (like London Roundhouse, second gig) someone with crutches in the air!

Thank you Wilco, see you in Groningen, March 1st!

    Reminder/earlier post of mine:

    - can be watched on the digital channel Cultura24.nl (November 29).

… and later “on demand” on the website of “3VOOR12TV”

Sunday 13th, my 13th show and my first Radio Cure…

    Superb show, great audience.

    See you tomorrow in Tilburg!

Last show, and maybe some more surprises...

  8. Having TWL for some days on my ZEN X-Fi2 these are my words (original or not and for starters: sorry for my English).

    1. AoA: original beginning, beautiful, strange guitar-solo which doesn’t seems to fit (ALTWYS does it better), great ending.

    2. IM: even better than Wilco (The Song)…

    3. S.: Beatlesque, nice soundscape, but not my favorite.

    4. DOM: secretly one of my favorite, (what a) superb (!) middle eight, but again this strange guitar-solo/distortion/16th-32th notes or whatever. Luckely the whistling brings the song back into focus.

    5. BM, a little bit like 3. Like the sound of the high and low strings of whatever that may be.

    6. BA: like a perfect popsong, hope to hear this song live! Top 3.

7 . OM: of the slower song on the album my favorite. “Well-balanced”.

    8. First ‘Honey Pie’, later ‘Being For The Benefit …” and somewhere in between “What a day for a daydream”. Wilco goes postmodern, it doesn’t get better, but again, not my favorite of the album and maybe the one I am going to skip. But not yet.

    9. SO. I also hear “Like A Wheel”, would be a great encore!

    10. Like 3, like 5, but these slower songs keep surprising, little twists and turns. Surrounded by great production.

    11. TWL: Top 3 of the album. Such a subtile change of key at 2:44 which give the song again a great momentum. Like "Theologians" an instant classic.

    12. OSM: Simple, beautiful, touching, haunting and I haven't even started yet. One of Wilco’s greatest tunes. A structure like “More Like The Moon”?

IMHO (at this moment) better than W(TA), on par with SBS (which I like a lot). (They will never make an YHF or AGIB again …)

DOM, BA and OSM are my favorites. It will be harder and harder for Wilco to pick like 25 songs for a great set.

  9. The Netherlands, twice.

Zondag 13 november: Vredenburg Leidsche Rijn, Utrecht

    Aanvang: 20.15 uur / zaal open: 19:15u / tickets 32 euro

  10. Looked on the internet …

    7.1. One Hand Clapping Theme

    7.2. Jet

    7.3. Soily

    7.4. C Moon

    7.5. Little Woman Love

    7.6. Maybe I'm Amazed

    7.7. My Love

    7.8. Bluebird

    7.9. Let's Love

    7.10. All Of You

    7.11. I'll Give You A Ring

    7.13. Live and Let Die

7.14. Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five

    7.15. Baby Face

… and on my “One Hand Clapping CD”.

This means, no “Let Me Roll It”, “Junior’s Farm”, “Wild Life/Hi Hi Hi“, “Go Now”, “Suïcide”, “Blue Moon of Kentucky” and other takes of “Soily” and “Jet“? That’s a lot!

  14. I was really surprised, like in London and Amsterdam, Wilco started with Ashes again. I first thought, it’s Amsterdam all over again. And at first it looked that way!

Standing in the back in the Effenaar (besides the PA) it looked like Jeff had a hard time. For me it was almost confirmed during IATTBYH when he pointed a disapproving finger to (someone in?) the crowd.

But then came Cars Can’t Escape and for me the night was more than OK.

How To Fight Loneliness also was a big YES and I have to confess, what a gorgeous ending of that song! Even the crowd around me caught the magic of that moment although it seemed only a few people knew this song.

I saw people having a great time, but I also saw (in the beginning) a resigned crowd. I had a hard time hearing them singing along with Jesus (only in the front and surely not from behind me at the bar).

I thought the turning point in the show was Handshake Drugs. From there the audience caught on.

For me the end was just perfect, solid rock from AM and Being There. Beautiful.

After visiting the shows London, Brussels and Amsterdam I remain with a feeling that maybe Wilco should have had ended their tour in Amsterdam and not in Eindhoven. Because for Eindhoven it was just another show. For Wilco it was a end of their European tour and (i.m.h.o.) the audience in Eindhoven was not (like) “conscious” of this fact, didn’t sympathize with Jeff's comments that much (of course the hard core fans in the front did!).

I also agree with the “loose, fun show-idea”.

Dutch newspaper and comments on the internet are nothing but enthusiastic and sometimes more and so am I (if somebody should doubt).

What an experience “travelling with Wilco”! I have to say that I liked the London show very, very much (Jeff solo is unforgettable, what am I saying, everything is ...) and I would like to add that Amsterdam was superb too.

So now it’s my time to be, to put in Jeff’s words, melancholic.
