  1. I became aware of Wilco around the time of YHF's release. It was on my list of albums to check out...never really made it to the top. Then a guy I jammed with back in the day was obsessed with WIlco and Superdrag. I bit on the Superdrag bit, and hard, but still didn't check out WIlco. Then one night, while having a few beers at a bar, I heard a song come on the juke box, and I looked to see what it was and I saw the cover of Being There on the screen. A little while later, I picked up Being There, and that's when I became a casual fan. Then that following Christmas, I got a gift certificate to the local record store. I then picked up Kicking Television, which had just came out a little while before. Well, Kicking Television changed everything for me (still does after listening to it today). I proceeded to use all of my giftcard money to other big box stores to buy up the rest of the Wilco back catalog in the next few weeks, and wasting no time to get familiar with it. I became obsessed!!!! Luckily, my first live Wilco related experience came a couple weeks later in Feb. of 2006 with a Jeff Tweedy show (Lincoln, NE at the Rococo Theater) and Glenn opening up! The steam didn't come out of those sails for the longest time. Yes, other bands have come into my life since, but anytime I get the urge to put on a Wilco album all of the magic that filled me up comes right back. I am sad that my last live WIlco experience came in the autumn of 2007, and I'm sure I have missed out on a few easy road trips to see them since.

I will also say I slacked on picking up the Whole Love, but I must say after hearing the new releases from Ryan Adams, The Jayhawks, and Wilco...Wilco definitely has the better album of the artists that were my world of Alt.Country...even though Wilco has expanded those boundaries into other forms of music! This was the first time since becoming obsessed with Wilco that I wasn't down at the record store waiting on release day...

  2. Vol. 1 is finally starting to grow on me. I thought it would be a shoe in at first because I think anything M. Ward touches is gold, and I think Zooey is the bees knees, but I couldn't get over the kitchiness of it at first, it almost seemed too cute. Last week, I finally got over myself and let it be what it is supposed to be a good pop record.

I'll have to check out Vol. 2

  3. These are some great lineups!

    I'd have to go with:

    Mike Campbell-guitar

    Ryan Adams-guitar/vox

    M.Ward-guitar/bass/keys/vox

    Tweedy-guitar/bass/vox

    Cindy Cashdollar-steel

    or

    Jon Graboff-steel

    Mike Mogis-misc. strings/keys

    Roger Lewis- drums

That's just off the top of my head. I like bands with alot of instruments :)

  4. Sorry for ressurecting an old thread.

The Souldier straps are great! My g/f got me one for x-mas last year, the "stained glass" print, and that thing is light years beyond my Levy's cloth strap. So comfy and soft. , not to mention durable and doesn't fatigue my arm and shoulder

I almost got one of the Owl print ones, but asked for the stained glass at the 11th hour :)

  5. ...and Fender is a money grubbing corporation who bought Gretsch and is cheapening that brand. hopefully they won't run it into the ground completely like they did with Guild (note to self:check yer facts here). Vintage guitars are too expensive. Asian guitars are unethical. What is there left to play?

I don't think FMIC is cheapening the Gretsch brand at all. If anything, they are trying to restore the brand. The Baldwin era really crushed the Gretsch brand. Just take a gander at the gretsch pages forum and you'll see how much praise post FMIC gretsches are getting. There is a lot of growing interest in the brand.

I've never had my hands on a Guild vintage or new (I'd love a vintage Aristocrat). So I can't comment on those, but I get giddy each time I get my hands on a new Gretsch....

Gibson...I imagine some are nice. I have a sweet mid 90's Les Paul studio...but I haven't played another Gibson that felt as good since.

  6. I've never been a huge fan of leather straps...never long enough so my guitars generally hit at about my stomach area. I'm not even that big of a guy 6'-ish and about 220-230 lbs. I know what you mean about how nylon slides around. It definitely does...but not in a bad way.

I think all of my guitars should have these straps...they aren't that bad of a price considering what vintage ace straps are going for these days!

  7. If I remember correctly, I think I read somehwere that he was playing a Bill Nash JM clone? I've played only one JM RI and it felt pretty clumsy to me. I did enjoy the J. Macis signature. I'd definitely be interested in seeing a Nels Sig JM.

I can't remember what JM Nels was playing when he was here in Oct. I just remember his Jerry Jones 12 string, but he did play a JazzMaster or two

  8. I like Levy's a lot. I have one of the pattern ones which has been on my main guitar (LP or tele) until I got my gretsch (doesn't have strap locks on it yet). I also have a heavy duty leather one that is in a box somewhere.

I'll have to check out some of the ones that are mentioned on this thread.

  9. I thought Tweedy was using a BSM treble booster?

I'd love to get my hands on a Big cheese and colorsound overdrive.

I wonder if the guys would dig the BJF HBOD? I have one and it is a great pedal, it adds a great feel to my amp.

When did Tweedy switch to the new Vox rig?

  10. My fav distortion unit is the BJFE Emerald Green Distortion and the Honey Bee isn't bad also. I also use the Red Rooster Booster and the Sea Blue EQ. I'm also hoping to get his compressor and other goodies.

His pedals are seriously like adding extra channels to your amp. So responsive to anything you throw at them and melt into any amp/guitar combo.

  11. I think a Swart AST will be my next amp, also. Just need to save steadily. I miss not having reverb and trem on board with an amp. I have a web-buddy in Australia who just picked one up to go with his mid 90's AC30 RI, and he has nothing but great things to say about it.

There are tons of boutique amp makers.

  12. I own a Tophat Club Royale 2x12 with a tube rectifier. Before this I've owned a Mesa rect-o-verb, Fender Twin reverb RI, and a Vox AC15 RI. I got my Tophat used for a steal (about the same price as my twin was new and less than what the mesa I had was new). For me it was worth it, because the amp is a lot more dynamic and responsive to my hands and subtle changes in volume controlled from the guitar. Plus the sound can be nearly piano-like. It's comparable to a Vox AC15/ AC30 and a Marshall 18 watt, but the builder makes sure to put his signature tone stamp in there.

I would say the Boutique amps that are worth checking out are- Tophat, Doctor Z, Reeves, Clark, Richter (not priced as high as Divided By 13, 65amps, Matchless, Bruno etc). I haven't played a Swart, but I would love to. Those things are turning heads over on The Gear Page.

  13. I actually have a TopHat Club Royale (18-20 watts EL84 Class A monster), and it's a sweet amp. I picked mine up used for about 1100 bucks back in the spring of 05. Brian Gerhard builds some sweet amps, and I'm hearing they just keep getting better. New, they aren't as bad as some of the boutique offerings (ie Divided by 13, 65amps, Matchless), but still not inexpensive. Used, you can pick up a CR for about 750-1200...depending on the speaker configuration and the year.

The amp itself is a monster. I got mine without having ever played it and I'm not the least bit sorry. It does have a nice vox/marshall...british thing going on, and all you really need is a good boost to put the amp over the top. It's very responsive and dynamic. Most of all it sounds fantastic with a tele...or fenders in general. It's also supposed to kill with p-90 guitars and gretsches. I've also heard good things about low output humbuckers (no higher than 8k DC) through it. Anything else you'd want to know...you can goto the forum at the Tophat site :)

  14. Funny, I've lived here all 27 1/2 years of my life and have yet to make it to Brother Sebatians...ofcourse there's no point now since I've been a vegitarian for the last two years...haha The Zoo is pretty awesome though.

I can't bash Wilco for lending some tunes to VW, I nearly bought one a couple years back (still wouldn't mind having one someday, but my Honda gets me where I need to go now)
