  1. Nice show last night, New Haven shows are always special to me because that's where I was first introduced to Jeff when I saw him with that other band open for The Replacements a few blocks from this theater almost exactly 25 years ago!  I can't believe how time flies.

Nice!  First time I saw UT was at Toad's the following year, as part of Michelle Shocked's Arkansas Traveler Revue.  Helluva lineup for that, including the Band and Taj Mahal, too.

I thought last night's show was great.  Like a few others here, I was also seated in the first row of the loge, almost dead center.  The sound was excellent there, and my wife definitely appreciated the view (she's not big on GA floor because she's shorter and hates when it gets jammed).

"Passenger Side" and "It's Just That Simple" were the highlights for me.

  2. And when they release a new album they probably won't have such varied setlists because they'll have new songs to promote. We are just in an incredibly wonderful sweet spot right now, I think, with the 20th anniversary, coming back together after an extended break and no new material to drum into our collective consciousness. You can feel their joy at being together again. It's just a great time to be a fan!

Well put.  I was thinking the exact same thing today.  My buddy and I often concede that we'll never see better shows than Irving Plaza in 1997 or the 3-plus hour Easter 2010 show at Lupo's in Providence, but then you see this run of shows with 89 different songs in three nights and realize they can still surprise and impress after 20 years.

  3. Thought last night was great.  Was in front of the overhang on the floor and didn't notice too much chatter; seemed like a pretty focused and appreciative crowd to me.

"Ripple" was obviously a surprise, but I'm even more surprised at no "Hoodoo Voodoo," especially with Halloween and all.  Thought for sure we'd get that as an encore last night.  Can't complain considering what we did get though.  Definitely the most unusual Wilco setlist I've seen live, owing to their desire not to repeat.  Very impressive.  Great to see them so relaxed and comfortable too.  I love that room and it looked like they do, too.  Hope they come back.

  4. I just checked Amazon to get some NRBQ on disc and my favorite, Kick Me Hard, is only available Mp3 (or about $40 used on disc). I used to have it (and a couple others) on Lp. Wish I'd kept them.

You will not be disappointed with Brass Tacks.  I honestly think it may be the best NRBQ album to date, and I understand how ludicrous that sounds, especially given the absence of Big Al, and the fact that Terry is the only original member.  But somehow, some way, he has managed to conjure all that timeless magic.  I mean, several of the songs sound like they were penned by Big Al, and it's still a crack band.

  5. Terry Adams, NRBQ - Brass Tacks.

^ That's not an NRBQ album, though, is it? Just curious.

Yes, it is an NRBQ album.  And I agree, it is awesome and essential.

But I came here today to add Lucinda Williams's latest release, "Down Where the Spirit Meets the Bone" to this list, and to place it at the very top for me.  I pre-ordered the album and have listened to it probably close to 20 times now.  It is tremendous and absolutely essential, even when compared to her already-impressive body of work.

  6.

Other quick question, if I may. I'm a massive Hornsby fan (my primary entryway to the Dead, really). I'd always assumed that Jerry's declining health had meant his era was weak, but there must be some gems in there. Any good SBDs from the Bruce years?

I love Hornsby and I loved the way that Jerry so clearly loved playing with him.  Check the three Denver shows from December 1990.  I went to all three and really loved watching Jerry and Bruce play off each other. Especially vivid is my memory of them playing Bruce's "Valley Road" at the end of the first set on the second night, with Jerry grooving and chiming in on the backing vocals with a huge ass grin on his face.  Getting goosebumps right now just thinking about it again.  Guess I gotta give it a spin now too...

  7. Listening to New Haven, 4/23/83 at my desk today. I went to the show the night before, but everyone on archive.org is interested in this one. Vocals are pretty ragged, as was typical of Jerry from the early 80s on, but lots of nice guitar work. Check it out:

Wow.  I do believe those were my first two shows.  Went with one group of friends the first night and came back raving; went back the next night with another group of friends.  Don't think any of us were the same since.

  8. "Essential" is tough to quantify imo; sticking with "excellent," off the top of my head these come to mind among the albums I own:

    Dylan's Time Out of Mind.

    Dr. John, Locked Down.

Ian Hunter and the Rant Band, When I'm President.

Graham Parker & the Rumour, Three Chords Good.

Levon Helm, Dirt Farmer and Electric Dirt.

    NRBQ, Brass Tacks.

    James Taylor, October Road.

Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Hypnotic Eye.

Van Morrison, The Healing Game, Back on Top, Magic Time.

    Tom Waits, Bad as Me.

    Agree with this one, too:

John Hiatt is still making some great records - Master of Disaster and Same Old Man is as strong as his mid 80's work. His latest is pretty good, too.

  9. When I first downloaded iTunes, probably 10 years or so ago, it came with several songs that automatically appeared in my library.  I liked some of them and kept them; didn't like others and deleted them.  Didn't find anything offensive about that.

From what I understand, Apple negotiated a deal with U2 whereby Apple purchased a copy of the new album for every iTunes library.  I would not have purchased it, but I was happy to download it for free this morning.  It was not in my library, but it appeared in my iTunes store account as "purchased," and I had to click on it and download it.  What I've heard so far isn't bad--need to give it a few more listens.  Hard to understand the downside to consumers.

As for increasing "sales," whatever.  Everyone from Phish to Neil Young to Tom Petty is now routinely including album "purchases" as part of ticket sales for shows.  With every ticket you get a download code.  Don't see the difference and don't care about sales.  I like the music or I don't, and free is better than the alternative imo.

  10. I scored tix right at 10 a.m. today but friends were shut out immediately again; and the tickets were all sold out when I logged back in to check after completing my purchase, around 10:02.

I expect that the general sale will be much easier again.  Even when it works, I find the Front Gate interface extremely awkward and unpredictable.

  11. Same here. Ah well, at least we get to see one, right ?

Oh yeah, not bumming about only seeing one; just wanted it to be the last show, and now I want to do Thursday instead (also an easier night for me to make the haul, as then I only have to sleepwalk through Friday at work before leaving early for Trick-or-Treat with the kids).  Will probably try for Thursday and then see if I can dump my Weds tix.

  12. Well, there you go.... night 3 on 10/30 posted on FB just now.

    Presale: 9/9 @ 10am. On sale: 9/10 @ 12pm.

Damn.  Just saw that.  Can only do one show and got tickets for Weds thinking it would be the last of this run.  Damn.

  13. Did anyone else catch this from Wilco's Twitter yesterday?:

Port Chester 2x show sold out. Thanks everyone and watch this space for related news on Monday. #Wilco20

Interesting.  Adding another show before or after?  The Cap is calendar is free on 10/27 and 10/30...

  14. Persistence paid off - got a pair for night 2 at the Capitol.  Now if I can scare up another one I might be generous guy and take someone else who digs Wilco.

Congrats.  Keep trying still.  12:55 and I just pulled another GA for night 2.

  15. Thanks for the offer, but persistence paid off. I was able to get 2 GA. Their system couldn't handle the traffic, I think.

Congrats.  It looks like their system doesn't offer tickets as long as they are in someone's cart.  While that results in slower sales, it also allows people with tickets in their carts enough time (perhaps too much time) to complete their order without releasing the tickets.  Front Gate does not hold tickets once you select them, which means you don't know if you have tickets or not until you complete your order.  I was in the middle of my order on Wednesday when it logged me off because its system crashed and I lost the order.

Ticketfly gives this message, which I think is helpful:

We're sorry, all available tickets are currently in other shopping carts. Please keep trying, they may soon become available.

  16. For anyone shut out the Cap, it is now 12:31 and I was just able to pull balcony seats for both nights after refreshing a few times.  I dumped the seats immediately but I just wanted to see if they were still available.  Keep trying.

And fwiw, getting on to the floor at the Cap without a GA ticket is not very difficult...

ETA:  12:45 pm and I was just able to pull a GA for Cap night one.

  17. I can spend twelve dollars and three zero cents, for print-at-home tickets, and unused letterhead

VCers wonder why Wilco still uses Front Gate, but the rest of us don't give a fuck

'Cause we scored tickets from them too, and shipping was just a buck

Exactly why I don't give a fuck about Ticketfly's service charge.  It worked for me and my friends, whereas Front Gate crashed for each one of us and several others here and elsewhere.  Lower service charge is only a good thing for me when I actually get service.

  18. Shut out again.  I had a half dozen students in my class trying to get in. (so what if it's unethical :) -  I really needed a couple tix for the second night at the Capitol.  I was going to take my daughter.  Hopefully, they'll release some later.  So how much are they going for on Stubhub right now?  Hate that shit

Keep trying.  Tickets are still coming up as people release them from their carts.  Just keep refreshing.

  19. My buddy scored us 4th row center balcony. I would have gone for the floor but he wanted seats.

FWIW, if you are talking about the Cap, "balcony" is actually rear balcony.  "Loge" is the front balcony and consists of three rows separated from the rear balcony by a large aisle.

  20. $25 service fee for Ticket Fly-eek!  Whatever.  I bought them anyway.

Yeah, that's a helluva service charge--for print at home tickets!  But yep, whatever.

and i"m in! see you all on the floor in port chester for night 2! :)

    Sweet.  Same here.

I had tickets for the Cap show, got dumped, then they were gone. Sold out in 2 minutes. I am PISSED.

Still selling balcony as of a minute ago.  Also, a friend bought an extra balcony ticket for night 2.  Let me know if interested and I will see if she still has it.
