  1. I love that Joe Pisapia record. (Dancing Partner kills me every time) The NMH record has grown somewhat thin over the last 10 years or so.

    Wild Frank - if you're interested I have an 80 minute Best-of Comp of both M.Ward & Sparklehorse.

    Sounds interesting. Do you have anything on those comps that not readily available? Both M.Ward and Sparklehorse are genius.

  2. Wow, I didn't know that. I read that book in about a couple days and loved it. Just lent it to one of my old writing teachers, actually. I ordered Northline a couple weeks ago, but it hasn't arrived yet.

    I've ordered all my Richmond Fontaine CDs from the band's website (10 bucks a pop, including shipping) and the last one came with a personalized Oregon postcard from Willy Vlautin, where he reminisced about a Vancouver writers festival and said it was great to hear from me again and "hope you like this one." And the funniest part of that is the fact that so many of his songs are written kind of (or directly) postcard-style, and I could imagine exactly what he'd sound like reading the letter... Anyway, I thought it was cool that he recognized me as a repeat buyer. Hope they tour around here sometime.

    Northline is a great read aswell. The copy I read (from my local library in Shrewsbury!) has a CD with it of music Willy had written inspired by the book.

    I'm interested to find out more about Vic Chestnutt. He did a song on the Sparklehorse/Dangermouse album which I loved. I'll Check out that recommendation.

  3. as far as that long Duke Suite, wasn't Turn It On Again supposed to be part of that?

    also, has anyone heard the 2007 remixed versions of the albums. some reviews say they sound too 80s-ish.

    I have them and I think they are great. However, they have seemed to get a lot of negative press from people who know what they're talking about, in audio terms. Sound good to me though. I think you're right about Turn It On Again. The two-disk SACD versions of the albums have great documentaries on them as well as some nice extras.

  4. I'll assume that you're already heard

    Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea?

    A stone-cold classic that should fall smack-dab into the middle of your tastes, as defined by the bands, above. If not, remedy that NOW!

    Let's see...

    The Format - Dog Problems

    A perfect pop record with one impeccable pop song after the next. All are bittersweet, though, so the cavities shouldn't be that deep.

    And, my standard recommendation:

    Joe Pisapia - Daydreams

    The sometime member of Guster released the best album of the '00s. And this is it.

    Another one...

    Pugwash - Earworm

    A few pedal steel guitars decorate yet more sweet, minor-key pop songs, drenched in reverb.

    And,

    Bob Elliott - Simple Machines

    Listen to the samples at the CD Baby page that's linked, above and tell me if that's the kind of think you're looking for. I think that it might be.

    Thanks for that. I have 'Aeroplane' and love it (If somewhat intense!!) but have never ventured any further with NMH. Is their other album worth picking up?

  5. Trying for some off beat suggestions:

    Sparklehorse -----> Colour Revolt from Mississippi (or alabama - I forget). Love this band and Plunder Beg and Curse is a fantastic album. In fact I'm loving everything on Fat Possum records - especially Colour Revolt and Vulture Whale.

    for Lampchop ----> The Heroes are Horses. Another southern band and old board member Gato's brother is the main guy. Gato's brother was actually in one of the Lampchop incarnations at some point. Their last album Red Baton is incredible.

    M Ward - That's kinda tough. I have to think back to like Leon Redbone or Richard Thompson, but Ward is so unique, those two don't really fit.

    Sorry, hate the Decemberists. They whine and don't sing.

    Thanks for that. I'll try to check some of those out. Whilst I disagree, I respect your hatred of the Decemberists. They do seem to spilt opinion sonewhat!

  6. Saw Genesis on the Duke tour in Cardiff around late 70's just when they were starting to go dire. Remember them playing stuff like Cinema Show which I loved. But the new stuff was not good - guess all the punk/new wave stuff was taking over by then and for those bands Genesis were the enemy: to be destroyed. And that was fair enough - pre-Duke they were a great band but afterwards truly embarrassing.

    I think there was some good stuff post-Duke but it was just a bit thin on the ground. I also feel that, in a pop context, Invisible Touch is a really good album. Not to my taste, but still very good. 'Home By The Sea' is a good tune, as is 'Domino' and 'The Brazilian'. I was reading about the Duke album recently and apparently a few of the tracks were originaly written to be one long song, a kind of eighties 'Suppers Ready'. That could have been interesting. I believe the songs that were originaly all linked were Behind The Line, Duchess, Guide Vocal, Dukes Travels and Duke End.

    P.s....Birmingham City? You want to be supporting Spurs mate!!!

  7. Hi guys. I'm looking for a bit of inspiration with regards good bands/artists to start exploring. On the basis of the below list of my favourites, what records do you think I should pick up next? Any recommendations (artist and specific records) are much appreciated.

    * M. Ward

    * Lambchop

    * Wilco

    * Decemberists

    * Sparklehorse

    * Micah P. Hinson

    * My Morning Jacket

  8. Looks like any chance of a proper Genesis tour in the near future may have gone. Phil Colins has had to retire from the drum-stool (all he was good for?) due to ongoing back problems. Aparently he did some seroius damage to his vertebrae on the last re-union tour and won't be playing again. Can live without the re-union shows tbh but I would really love to see them back in the studio with Gabriel and Hackett as I feel they could create something interesting. Maybe an update of Selling England By The Pound with some social commentry on the state of the UK at the moment.

    In reference to the above point, I felt similary sad watching Mr.Banks of the Rome DVD. He was always the soul of that band but it seemed that the power shifted over to Collins in the mid-eighties. Has anyone ever checked out the Tony Banks solo records? Is there anything worth picking up out there? He never seemed to break out in the same way as Collins/Gabriel/Rutherford and Hackett.

  9. Not sure if this counts but there were a band that went to my school called 'Manson'. They had a few hits (wide-open space?) and a couple of pretty big albums in the UK in the late nineties but seem to have disapeered of the radar recently.

  10. Responding to an earlier post, but I am really loving 'Tennessee Fire'. Some great songs on there. I still feel 'Evil Urges' was a major backwoods step for the band. Some of the experimental tracks are good but there are some really bland moments on record (Thank You Too, Librarian, Look At You, I'm Amazed). That said, 'Touch Me Part 2' is a classic MMJ track. I'll be very interested to see what they come up with next. Jim (Yim?) seems to be evolving into a Curtis Mayfield/Erika Badu soul-man. Wasn't overly impressed with the George Harrison tribute record either really but am looking forward to Monsters of Folk. Sounds like M.Ward is the star of that record though.

  11. How about Derek and the Dominos - Layla and Assorted Love Songs. Nells would be all over that!!

    Other than that I'm thinking Neil Young - 'Trans'. There are some great songs on that album that could be redone with a different context. In terms of Dylan I think they could do something with 'Street Legal'.

  12. Looks like Grant Lee Phillips has a new album coming out next month. Always been a big fan of his work, both solo and with 'Buffalo'. The first three Grant Lee Buffalo albums are classic, especially 'Mighty joe Moon'. Back in the day they formed part of a trio of bands, along with Wilco and The Jayhawks, that formed my taste for what was then called 'americana'(?). His last album was so-so but he has put out good solo albums such as 'Mobilize' and 'Virginia Creeper'. The details are on his website.

  13. Real Gone rules. Totally underrated Waits album. The boys aren't into Rain Dogs or Swordfishtrombone?

    Real Gone is amazing. It didn't seem to get much praise when it came out but its great. Rain Dogs is my favourite Tom album but the boys do love 'Underground' off Swordfish...Its a great song for stomping about pretending to be a monster!!.

  14. My wife will let me listen to anything as long as its not Tom Waits!! My youngest son (3yr old)loves a bit of Wilco and is forever shouting "Wilco we love you baby"!! Strangly, both my young boys love Tom Waits and will do 'Tom Waits' dancing when I put on 'Bone Machine' or 'Real Gone'.

  15. Neil Young & Crazy Horse: Country Home (The whole of Ragged Glory Really);

    Aerosmith: Young Lust (Cheesy but Rockin');

    Jane's Addiction: Up The Beach;

    Faith No More: Woodpecker's From Mars;

    Genesis: Watchers Of The Sky (Strange choice I know, but it does it for me!);

    My Morning Jacket: Wordless Chorus (or Xmas Curtain);

    Black Crowes: Remedy (Southern Harmony is such a good album);

    Sparklehorse: Pig!!

    Tom Waits: Hoist That Rag;

    Neutral Milk Hotel: Holland 1945;

    Tricky: Black Steel;

    John Coletrane: A Love Supreme (Amazing when played loud..anoys the neighbours tho...);

  16. I don't think its a great record to be honest. I would love it to be but I do feel its lacking somewhat. Certainly a step down from Yankee/Ghost/Shy Blue. However, its still a lot better than most albums I heard this year. There's too many averaage songs on it to be considered great. Also, as mentioned above, the lyrics don't do anything for me at all. Its all just opinion though....and I still hate the album cover. I'm not into this 'Wilco are fun, don't take us seriously' vibe.

  17. Lots of references to David Lynch but no-one seems to have mentioned 'Inland Empire'. That is one creepy movie. Its not scary but the atmosphere in that movie made me feel a real sense of anxiety and dread. I physcally felt unconfortable watching it. My wife had to leave the room and she wasn't even watching it!! Just the soundtrack and noises made her move. I've seem it a couple of times and I've still not really got a clue as to what is going on. It is a facinating film all the same. Mulholland Drive is also pretty unsettling. Sometimes being confused by a movie like recent Lynch efforts is way more scary that just watching a traditional horror flick.

  18. No. Don't buy it. The person should be reported. These types of things should not be posted here. If you want to steal Wilco songs, they are out there to be had. There is no reason to pay someone to steal them for you.

    I agree entirely. I was just drawing atention to it to ensure no one was considering paying the guy to burn them. I'm suprised e-bay allows this sort of this tbh.

  19. Morning Guys. Looking on e-bay (U.K) there is a chap selling a four-disk set of Wilco non-album tracks. Theres no picture but I am assuming someone has just burned some cdr's and are flogging them for a tenner. The seller is from Spain. This is the track listing:

    "Four discs containing all rare tracks from Wilco. Brilliant artwork, excellent sound.
