  1. Hey folks, I was wondering if anybody heading to Mountain Jam on Friday would be willing to give a fellow Wilco fan a lift?

I live near Newburgh, NY (about an hour and a half south of Hunter).

  2. I thought it was super tight.

My brother and I had a few drinks prior and he kept going on about how it was a rip off of some old song. hes like "you know the one that goes bum bum bum......bum bum bum...."

Im like F OFF I have no idea what youre talking about :)

I always think the first few bars sound like a cross between Bill Withers "Use Me" and The Band's version of "Don't Do It".

  3. I really like this song. It's grown on me consistently with each listen. The melodies are strong and I love Glenn's selection of field recordings.

It's got a county fair / ragtime feel. It's like Nilsson/Beatles crossed with Tom Waits.

In terms of Wilco, it reminds me a little of both Why Would You Wanna Live and parts of Pieholden Suite.

^This. Still not my favorite but it's definitely proving to be a grower and I totally agree about the Nilsson vibe.

Oh, and I love the "sing along with the clarinets and arguments" line.

  4. The interplay between various band member's skronks after the first loud part is one of a handful of brilliant moments on that record.

^This. And it's hard not to like any song where all 3 guitarists are rocking away.

Having said that, I am pretty tired of hearing it (One Wing as well) and it always seems to have a predictable slot in the early part of the set.

But this is one of the problems that comes with going to every show I can and obsessing over each setlist I guess.

  5. It's morning here so I'm on day two of this record- and still really liking it. I had a lump-in-throat moment on first listen with "dawned on me" and those impressions are hard to overturn, so i think this has already earned its place in wherever it is that good records earn their place.

Art of Almost- the wilco everyone seems to want. perhaps a bit incongrous with the rest as the electronica goes away after this song and doesn't really come back. but a great track nevertheless. Yes, of course there's Nels' freak out, but let's not forget Glenn's drumming- that rhythm is sick.

I might- love the fuzzy bass punk-pop and well placed after AoA

Sunloathe- doesn't jump out at me, perhaps a grower.

Dawned on Me- sonically reminiscent of "I'm always in love," this song gave me the first goosebumps that Wilco has given me in a long time.

Black moon- another one that doesn't immediately jump out at me.

Born Alone- haters be damned, the inifinitely decsending outro is worth the price of admission alone.

Open MInd- beautiful slow waltz. Not quite convinced by the clicheed refrain.

Capitol City- this is the one certain blogholes (thanks crow) called jazzy or ragtime, right? seriously, do those idiots even know who Scott Joplin is? They throw these terms out nearly at random because a track doesn't fit neatly into a category they're familiar with. Utter twee shite? at least you're not betraying an utter ignorance of music history. You're just wrong (um...in my opinion) this is the best chord progression since the Bennet days. lots of stuff happening sonically as well, and I don't even mind the bells this time (they were horrid on w(ta))

Standing O- right now this seems like the filler track. i'm hoping it will grow on me

Rising red lung- add this to the category of Black Moon- doesn't really jump out at me but has growth potential

Whole Love- the guitar intro reminds me of Mansour Seck for some reason, but that ends when the band kicks in. love it- a great feel good song.

One Sunday Morning- not going to ruin this by talking about it. wow.

I agree with almost all of what he just said.

Open Mind reminds me a bit of ITMWLY in that the lyrics and sentiment of the chorus are so simple that it seems like anyone could have tossed them off but the build up to the chorus is pure Tweedy genius.

Not really sure how I feel about Capitol City yet, I've enjoyed listening to it so far but don't know how often I'll want to hear it. It does feel kinda like it doesn't fit in with the other songs.

I'd describe Standing O not as filler but as an "easy rocker" (I miss Jay, too). And I'm loving the handclaps. Can't wait to help out with those in a few weeks.

The title track actually sounded to me like Jeff trying his hand at writing a Belle & Sebastian type song.

Overall, the production is amazing :music . Even the songs that didn't immediately grab me had bits of production I found really fascinating.

Big ups to all! But extra big ups to Pat's ears!

  6. Saw Bright Eyes and Dr. Dog last night at The Chance in Poughkeepsie. Really good show! :dance

I've heard Dr. Dog a little here and there but this was my first prolonged exposure to them. They were pretty good, I was definitely impressed with their musicianship.

Very different Bright Eyes show than last time I saw them (@ Radio City), probably because the audience was practically right on top of them.

They played lots of stuff from Lifted and I'm Wide Awake It's Morning, only 3 songs from the latest I think.

  7.

I was there! That duet was pretty darned adorable!

They played this (w/ Nicole Atkins) when I saw them at the New Year's Eve show at MSG a couple of years ago too. They also played "You're All I Need To Get By" :D

    Thanks for the link, Charlie.

  8. If I had to guess a current player being a Wilco fan I'd pick Mets pitcher R.A. Dickey. I've heard interviews by him. He reads quite a bit and has generally more of a thinker's mind than that of a jock.

Speaking of Mets, The Baseball Project played (or are playing) a show for Ike Davis's charity at City Winery. So I would put him on the list of possible Wilco fans.

  9. I don't know for sure but I would doubt anyone but Liam played the drums on it. Maybe little brother. I do know Roll Of The Eye and Chase The Seasons and Don't Even Know Your Name are my faves at the moment but the whole thing is solid. Anyone planning to checkout his Solid Sound slot?

The drums on "Real Late" kill me. Been walking around with that beat in my head all week.

I will definitely be there to check him out this weekend. Don't know if you noticed but he's doing a set on Sunday as well (inside one of the galleries). :thumbup

  10.

    Thanks for the link.

It's funny I listened to the album a few times yesterday while I was doing stuff around the house. I wasn't listening to it repeatedly so much because I loved it but just because it flies by so fast that every time it ended I'd be like, "wait, what?" and start it again.

Then, this morning I woke up and had two big cups of coffee, strapped on the headphones to really listen to it and :rock .

I know he's touring with a band now but do you know if he played the drums himself on this one?

  11. So.... Joe's field opens when the venue opens. I've got mixed feelings about this. It seems crazy to sit there all day, and unfair to put a chair down to reserve a spot. Speaking hypothetically... is it fair to assume that people won't congregate until the usual 1-2hrs before showtime?

What is nice is that there won't be that mad dash to the front. That was dangerous last year.

I'm guessing the area near the stage will still be off-limits until close to showtime but most of the field will open throughout the day.

Also it looks like there's some exhibits and stuff going on there during the day (I saw something about being able to play catch with the local ballclub, maybe the falconry?).

So while it will be open maybe they'll be discouraging people from getting too "set up".

  12. What about parking around town? We are staying in Williamstown and haven't decided whether to try the shuttles or attempt to find a spot in town. Thoughts?

I would say that if you arrive early or around the time gates are opening you should be able to park nearby. Last year we were able to park in the same lot, about 2 blocks away, all 3 days.
