  1. Jeff Tweedy is mentioned twice and Wilco once (so far, half through) in the new novel, "Freedom," by Jonathan Franzen. Leading up to the mentions, the characterization of the musician and his band in the book made me think the author was probably familiar with Wilco. Good book, too.

  2. correct on both counts, don't actually mind some of U2's old stuff, and thought my comments would be taken in jest...alas, i got yelled at, but that's okay, as long as people keep listening to music more than than they write about it, i will survive. cheers.

Thought it was a funny comment and hardly worth the uproar. Don't be discouraged.

  3. Compared to Friday's show, it was definitely the crazier / more spontaneous show of the two. Lots o' drunk St. Patty's early revelers clogging up the streets near the Vic, despite the miserable weather, and some of that spilled over into the crowd. Plenty of drunken requests, talkers, videotapers (despite Jeff's repeated admonishments to stop videotaping), crazed drunken women shouting completely random nonsensical things, etc.

Some great songs heard last night - Shakin' Sugar / Alone sounded great, and I loved hearing my request (Chinese Apple).

It was kinda lame when Jeff opened the crowd up for questions and some jackass asked him about Jay Bennett. Jeff stated he had nothing to say about it and moved on from there.

The Jeremy chord strumming thing was very cool, he was a 14-year-old dude who was very pumped to be up there, raised his hands victoriously. I don't think he'll forget this show any time soon.

Great request! Too bad I wasn't there to hear it. I did listen to it last night, though, & thought how awesome and unlikely it would be to hear live. And to hear Twist of Fate, Someday Soon, Promising, Flowers -- Oh, the regret of missing them & more!

  4. To each their own, but I don't understand how anyone can like W(TA) better than SBS. There are some great songs on W(TA), but SBS just sounds more like a complete album.

My criterion is which has more songs that I like. Either way, there's no need for you to understand anything except the first part of your comment.

  5. It took until a few months ago for me to like SBS. Nothing really grabbed me when it came out and I was probably too impatient with it. But after they "redeemed" themselves (to me) with The Album, I gave it more time. It's still probably my least favorite but I can now appreciate it, especially YAMF, Walken, On & On.

  6. I had a good time last night and did record the show. To my knowledge I was the only one. The previous comments about the sound were pretty accurate. It is a boomy room with poor acoustics and it is reflected in the recording. Stan did a great job and after the first two songs, he got it sounding better, but it is just not an ideal venue for music. All that said, it is very listenable and besides, there weren't be any other sources! The torrent can be found on etree:

I recently got the show from owl&bear very easily and am absolutely thrilled to have it on cd to enjoy over & over again! I'm not generally attracted to live recordings unless, I now know, I was there. Thanks for sharing and making this Wilco fanatic very happy.

  7. I drove 9 hours from Burlington, VT to see this show tonight. People think I'm nuts (maybe I am, just a little bit) but you guys know the lengths a fanatic will go. It was, as usual, an awesome show. These guys are having so much fun. Someday Soon was definitely a highlight. Jeff said that it was the most requested song--57 people or something like that. Then he said they wondered whether it was really that many people making the request or just one very computer savvy individual. He periodically updated the crowd on the hockey score, finally announcing the win toward the end of the show, and of course the place went crazy (congratulations Canada!). There was an interesting moment with Glenn--I can't even remember which song it was, but Jeff pointed out that Glenn's pedal broke early on in the song, so for the rest of the song he was hitting the bass drum with his penis. Yes, he said it. I couldn't make something like that up. Right before Hummingbird, Jeff apologized that they couldn't play longer, but they had a big plate of pouttin waiting for them (no clue how to spell that, or even what it is, actually). He said that this was the rowdiest of all the Canadian crowds thus far, and there were some goofballs up front that were living up to that distinction. I'm exhausted, but this drive was well worth it. Excited for Montreal and Ottawa!

Here's the setlist. Unfortunately, they did not play Red Eyed/Got You or Kingpin. And Califone (who are phenomenal) joined them for California Stars.

I requested Someday Soon for East Lansing. I have to learn how to "gain the system."

  8. 32? How? I counted 27, but counting "nothing at all" at the end of that streak would make it 28 for me I think.

Thought I counted right but maybe not. Anyway . . . what's the chance they'll play at least in Chicago this summer, since their latest email says they'll be working on a new album and not touring.

  9. Yes, what a treat Summerteeth was/always is -- that's twice for me in a year! Also good to hear John and, like the maybe-little-bit-slower Passenger Side, a much slower Should've Been In Love, which was very nice. Absolutely love Hoodoo, especially when they pair it with I'm a Wheel, like they did at the legendary Royal Oak show last summer. They spoiled us with that show, but last night was a good one and now I'm so tempted to make a trip to Scranton next month.

  10. Nah, you said it was probably motivated by the press and $$$ and stuff. I'm saying it's simpler than that. When the year changes from the familiar third decimal to a new one, that feels like a new decade, and so it's celebrated as such. I have no problem with that. I always assume bringing up the "technically" argument is just being contrary.

Au contraire . . . technically, "that is ignored" to "nobody has ever paid attention to that" is reiteration. But your subsequent contribution to the speculation of "why" is appreciated and completely agreed with. My speculation was meant to tie in with this thread, not be read as the only explanation. (This is a fun digression.)

  11. Can someone please identify these three songs. They're probably on the non-album list but I wouldn't know because I don't know their titles.

    1) "I won't ever cry for you and you won't ever shed tears for me . . . it's not that I don't care at all, we lost touch so long ago."

    2) "I kept my distance because she fell in love with everyone, smoking grass and taking x-mas trees she fell in love with me."

    3) "I'm gonna find you, put a kiss upon your lips . . . no one outshines you . . ."

  12. I've seen Wilco 8 times before this show and this was the most enjoyable I've experienced. Noticed on the set list tally that they played the most songs of any show listed this year. I thought it was long and couldn't believe they kept going like they did -- an 8 song, second encore! Tweedy re-energized my Wilco love with that one & The Album helps, too!

  13. I've been a fan of Wilco for 9 yrs but just discovered this site. Anyway, I don't want my husband to think I'm obsessed so I only told him about one of the two dreams I had about Wilco this past week & my son teases me about the crush he thinks I have on Tweedy.
