  1. It would have been great if you could download it when you bought the album. My download card doesn't work yet. Maybe tomorrow, the official release date? Upload the thing already!

  2. I'm glad the vinyl omits the live tracks. There are some great live performances on those B-sides but I really don't like them removed from their context. It's the vinyl for me.

    This also makes me hold out hope for some unreleased stuff in the future, since there really aren't tracks on this set that haven't been released in some form (unless I missed something). I absolutely loved Pearl Jam's "Lost Dogs" compilation, and while this isn't really a mix of released and unreleased, it looks pretty darn good.

  3. "Isn't It a Pity" was the chill-inducing highlight for me. Seriously was hoping for an MMJ George Harrison cover, but never dreamed all of Wilco would join. And it sounded perfect.

     

    The Wilco set was cool because it started slow. I'm not sure how much people were into that, but I sure dug it.

     

    The different between MMJ fans and Wilco fans was on display: all of the MMJ fans seem to be 20-something neo-hippies, while the Wilco fans look like one-time rockers turned professionals in their thirties. There are exceptions, of course.

     

    I'd never seen MMJ, and they sounded great, but I've tried to get into them, and I just find the songwriting lacking for me. But they were seriously tight.

     

    Dylan was Dylan. The band was great, much better with Charlie back in the fold. I saw him in March, and it was clear that Duke wasn't really in the groove. A lot of wrong notes. I dare say the band was perfect, save for "Duquesne Whistle".

  4. I played a show one time in Chicago. Not ten feet from the stage, two drunk guys talked loudly during our entire, acoustic set. Afterwards, one of them came up to me and said, "Killer set. Where are you guys playing next?" I did not tell him.

  5. I wasn't there. But I think the point is that it's not just you that's attending. I'll give you that, if the vibe is such that people are talking, that's fine. I've attended and played those shows, as well as shows where people listened to me playing. Playing in Nashville, especially, in songwriting rounds, some rooms will evict you, because that's what they're about. If I go to a bar and listen to a band play covers, I'll talk and they expect that.

     

    If the vibe of Solid Sound is that people are "conversational" during sets, so be it. But, if not, it is intrusive to think that your conversation should be thrust on other people. It's just not cool. If you said a couple of things, and the guy "shushed", maybe he needed to chill. But if you were talking throughout the show, you were wrong, and perhaps you need to consider that. When you buy a ticket, it's not just for you to listen to the band, it's for a group of people. I've got to side with Jeff on this one:

    And I think that's the point. Not only is excessive talking egregious, but man...I don't need to hear about your stylist or how wasted you got last week. Hit a bar and talk all you want.

  6. . I actually got shushed by some old guy during Wilco 's (lackluster) Saturday night set.

     

    Can someone explain to me the following: 1) Why some people think it's acceptable to have long conversations during a concert, and 2) Why they'd want to. If you said a sentence of two, that's cool. If you are carrying on a conversation, that's just unacceptable. Why even go? You are taking the right of the other people who paid good money to hear the show. Not cool. I took my nine year old to Wilco last year. He knows to pay attention to a band that expects that attention. So, if your talking is too excessive or too loud, you should be "shushed", whether or not it's from an "old guy". Concerts and other events where large people gather are not just for, or about, one person. Even Mr. Tweedy has quieted people, and good for him.

  7. Musical blind spot? Ryan Adams. I've never heard a song from him that wasn't just....existing. It never seems to go anywhere, and I've tried. I have a lot friends into him. Also, "Kid A" and "Amnesiac" era Radiohead. I loved "The Bends" and "OK Computer". After that, there was too much whining. And then I really enjoyed "In Rainbows" so who knows. Usually, I can see why people like bands. Jack Johnson took me a long time, and just recently I've been digging some of his stuff. I don't think that everyone gets every great band right away. Music fans go through phases with bands. My guess is that any people here who are really big music fans will like all these bands eventually. At least that's been my experience.

  8. He is not the "new Jay" in that he doesn't share the songwriting. To me, above all else, that's where Jay shined and was (I assume) a sounding board for Jeff. I don't think that there really is someone like that in Wilco now. Jeff could use it, but he doesn't need it. "The Whole Love" shows that he's doing alright by himself. I do wish there was more songwriting input from the other guys, just to see what they'd come up with, though.

  9. One more thing: I wasn't really let down by Sky Blue Sky or The Album, so I feel lucky enough to have enjoyed everything that they've put out which is rare for most bands.

     

    I feel the same way. Since I'm new to Wilco fandom (although I've been a cursory listener since "Being There"), I didn't really hear any of the albums in order. I dig most of W(TA), and I love SBS. This record, however....is...uh...better.

  10. "Capitol City" is cool. I dig it. It's a good, slight break into the "Standing O" intro. Let me say that I didn't really dig "Open Mind" when I first heard it a couple of months ago. Seemed like a by-the-numbers folk ballad. Since I listen to so much music, I hear so much "new" music that really is so derivative, and what I love about Wilco is that every song isn't. It's an original melody, usually, and a brilliant lyric, coupled with a well thought out arrangement. "Open Mind" doesn't quite meet that standard, and I would say the same thing for "Dawned on Me". The rest of what I've heard, though, ranges from really good to great. Better than "The Album", More adventurous than SBS. Digging "Whole Love", and can't wait for the last two!

  12. I've had a long, storied history with my Wilco fandom. I saw the "Box Full of Letters" video on MTV late one night. I liked it alright, and then also on Beavis and Butthead, I believe. But I never really connected with the few tunes I heard. A while later I purchased "Being There" in NYC, because I knew this was a band I should like. But, for some reason, it never really resonated. I streamed YHF a few years after that, bought AGIB at Half Price Books for $2 a few years after that. But Wilco never really clicked for me until I saw them in 2009 in Iowa City. Then it all made sense, and after that show, Wilco was almost all my wife and I listened to for six months. So...there it is. Now we're hooked, know every word, every b-side, etc. Don't know why it took my brain so long...

    EDIT: Never mind! I see the above link is the same thing. Either way, pretty nice cover, even if it stays close to the original. Makes me wonder what else is collecting dust in tape vaults and hard drives when it could be in heavy rotation on my Zune!
