  1. Someone did get the webcast, apparently almost perfectly. Hopefully it'll be in the roadcase soon, so someone can get a perfect copy. I should try to capture the Amsterdam show.

That would be awesome if you did that! also, who was it that captured the webcast last night?

  2. If someone recorded this that would be great. I will be at the show audio taping. I am hoping the venue doesn't give me a hard time about bringing in taping gear...

That would be amazing, props to whoever does this!

  3. Sometimes it takes a long, long while to get into a song, album or artist. It wasn't until about a year ago that I absolutely fell in love with "Wishful Thinking." Up until then I had thought it was merely alright.

That live version from the Ashes DVD is incredible

  4. Ha. The first time I listened to YHF - I distinctly remember hearing Radio Cure and instantly loving the vibe of the whole song. The words caught me and sent me into thought. The beat bounced me along in a nice little groove. Dirge is probably the last word I would have come up with - I think this song really moves, it's just in a much more subtle way.

Funny how subjective an experience listening to music can be.

Definitely... for me, it's the beginning of the song that gets me with the pounding drums

  5. Hiya all, never posted here before but have been following some of the interesting discussions on this forum. Wilco is great, and I discovered lots of other cool bands cause of you (or learned to appreciate some of them more).

I now have a question though. Which live recordings/bootlegs are essential to listen to? I got some from their roadcase and they all sound great, but there are so many released recordings on the wilco archive I dont know where to start!!!

I am really looking for a good quality, comparable to Kicking Television, recording with some essential live versions of songs. Don't care which songs, as long as the live versions of them are the best possible :)

    Thanks in advance,

Have you downloaded the Ashes tracks? Also, the webstream sources of the three St. Louis shows (5/15/08, 5/16/08, and 5/17/08) are essential to me..excellent sound and great setlists

  6. It would be nice to see them release a box set of the residency shows, much like the Dead have done with the Winterland boxed sets.

Haha that would be cool indeed. What is your imput on KT vs Ashes? I would love to see an official release of something from Wilco (the tour) ... I want some crisp live versions of the new tracks!

  7. Favorite part of the entire album: The piano part under Tweedy's "I am down on my hands and knees, every time a door bell rings." Close second: Poor Places, the ending might be the closest anyone's come to getting the same effect of "A Day in The Life."

The other high compliment I can give this record is anytime something awful happens in my life or in the world at large, this is almost always what I put on. And unlike something like Death Cab's Transatlanticism, which was my "angry young man" record years ago that I now can't listen to at all without being reminded how ridiculous I was when it was my favorite album, Foxtrot has always endured for me. It's universal in a weird way that can adapt to almost any mood, and yet all the songs feel completely specific towards a time or an emotion.

Definitely.. I am pretty sure that I am a bigger fan of Ashes live, but like all of the YHF tracks, the studio versions and live versions are amazing in their own ways, depending on your mood... the Ashes on the studio just has this level of desolation that isn't conveyed live

  8. This is how I see it... I agree that it is not their best work, but every band has that one magnum opus that will not be topped by subsequent records... Yes it is true that W(TA) is not a step in a new direction but rather a record of settling into comfortability in a "greatest hits" kind of sense. However, I feel like there are some fantastic things on the album that must be appreciated for what they are. For example, if nothing else, the 3 song run of Deeper Down, One Wing, and Bull Black Nova makes the album for me. Bull Black Nova is a monster of a song that brilliantly captures hysterical madness. For those who do not like the album, this song alone is a sign that the band still creates edgy tunes, if that is what you are looking for. Personally, I enjoy the other tunes like Sonny Feeling for what they are: A band having fun playing music.

  9. longtime wilco fan. my take on last night...curious to hear your feedback. this isn't a debate, i'm not "right"...just one person's opinion.

Wilco has become one of the most confounding live acts in music.

They have the complete package: songwriting (songcraft, melody & lyrics), musical chops, a good catalogue and whatever “it” is. Yet all but one time, I have walked away from a wilco show with a slight disconnect.

I always thought it was nils cline not 100% fitting in. but with 2 albums featuring nils (3 since he was brought in for the ghost is born tour, so they are his songs as much as anyone’s), nils has finally meshed with the band. In fact the musical highlights were all nils-led. They have never sounded more comfortable and relaxed.

And maybe that was what was a little strange about wilco last night. their appeal has always been a sense of brooding, anxiety and discomfort hidden behind the pretty music. It was so fun to watch this twangy rock band become an art rock band.

I never thought I’d ever say this, but wilco these days could stand to take themselves a little more seriously.

Let me back up: we wouldn’t be having this conversation if it wasn’t for everything they do right. there were long stretches of transcendence, where the music takes hold of you and you are hanging on every note. I am your face, impossible germany, handshake drugs, hate it here, bull black nova, theologians, hummingbird, can’t stand it (!) were just awesome in that “only wilco can write and play music like this” way. Mixed in with rockers like I’m the man who loves you, im a wheel, casino queen (!!) and slow ballads like company in my back, one wing and you never know, you got a really nice blend of tempo and tone…the complete wilco if you will. It was just about an A+ setlist really.

But they also have an uncanny ability to tear down the 4th wall and go from WILCO to “wilco”, 6 dorks playing dork rock. Tweedy taking a 15 sec joke and turning it into a 3 min rant. Trading shirts with the guy in the gold lame shirt? Funny. Talking about it after every song? not. let Kingpin be a crowd interaction song without forcing the crowd to clap and whoop. Let jesus etc be a singalong without prompting the crowd and asking if they can sing louder than Austin. And the rock star poses from glen before I’m the man and pat “townsend” sansome, who can’t play a guitar chord without a windmill? Wilco (the single)? Come on. Why play 2 encores that are really sets? For the “please come back” screams from the crowd?

And the crowd. Oh god the crowd. Wilco has become the indie DMB…what was once an endearing crowd of Johnny Every-Bloggers and their cutter girlfriends has turned into chicks dragging their disinterested meathead boyfriends and 16 year old indie starter kits. Skinny black jeans have been replaced by old navy cargo pants. I actually miss the hard core shoe gazer wilco fans. right or wrong, wilco just isn't perceived as cutting edge anymore. whether blame goes to the band or the fanbase on this who knows. but the vibe was different.

Wilco has everything they ever wanted. A stable lineup, a sober tweedy, a big loyal fanbase. And lord knows they deserve it. I just think they are one of those bands who are better when they are suffering for their art/have something to prove/etc.

i miss brooding wilco. i just can't lie.

That said, they played almost 30 songs last night. you'll never say they mail it in, that's for damn sure

    Do you write for Pitchfork?

  10. Can't say I agree.. I love the new lineup and I do like listening to a show, but also I don't mind listening to a collection of outstanding versions of songs being brought to life by a new lineup and fresh ideas... On KT, Wilco is taking recent songs from AGIB and older songs and giving them new life.. it is very meaningful and the songs are fresh and raw.. Since then the band has become comfortable
