  1. I always got a kick out of the "Chiclets" guy in the front row....

That "The Music Never Stopped" movie was in an independent theatre here for a week or two. I thought it'd be around longer so I missed it. Anybody here seen it?

I saw TMNS. It is kitchy and sentimental but has a really fine performance by JK Simmons and when I heard the music in the context of the story, well... I got pretty forgiving of the sentiment. Apparently it's based on a case study by Oliver Sacks.

  2. Just some thoughts....

    Hayden Symphonies - 22, 31, the last 4

if you like Mahler 1 try any of the others, 5 is a good one to move to next then

    Sibelius Symphonies 1,2,5

    Wagner opera excerpts

    Brahms 4 symphonies

    Tchaikovsky symphonies 4, 5, 6

    Shostakovitch symphony 5

if you are looking for some other more off the beaten path stuff try

    Janacek Sinfonietta

    Martinu Symphony No. 5

    Just some jumping off points.

I've spent almost 40 years playing this music so if you ever want to talk about it feel free to get in touch.

And I know you said no Mozart but...

Mozart Piano Concertos - my favorites are 21 (obvious) and 22.

    Mozart Symphonies - 25, 29, 40, 41

I just had to add those.

  3. For the Lp enthusiasts:

ed. Don't know why it says "available for the first time in over 40 yrs." I had Aoxomoxoa on Lp, as well as American Beauty and the first one. Maybe referring to the first one.

I think they're referring to the original mixes of Anthem of the Sun and Aoxomoxoa. I would love to have those mixes but I'm past buying LPs. Wish they would just issue them on CD.

  4. We have tickets for tonight and I can't wait. We drove into Montclair last night to see a movie and since we were early we decided to walk down to the theater to check out the place. It was about 9 so the show was well under way. On our walk back up Bloomfield Avenue (the main road) we heard music coming from down an alley. It was the back of the Wellmont stage. The gate was unlocked so we wandered down the alley and sat on the fire escape steps and listened to the end of Impossible Germany and all of California Stars. The stage door was ajar but we only peeked in, so we could see how close we were. It sounded great, almost like a private concert, even through the doors. Just whet our appetite for tonight.

  5. I'm not yet convinced that it was ol' smokie walking around the island in Christian's body... I think because she's been claimed, when Claire looks at MIB she is seeing him as he "used" to be, on that beach with Jacob all those years ago.

    That's my take too.

  7. I have a theory about the bomb.

Juliette is right. It didn't work - and It worked. Just as the bomb went off there was a time-shift. I think either Jin or Miles makes reference to this. The survivors were shifted in time just as the bomb exploded. That's how they survived. For one time-line the bomb was present and worked - Jack's on the plane, etc. For the other timeline the bomb wasn't present, the survivors lived but stayed on the island.

Or I could be completely wrong. :blush

  8. There's no religious significance to it whatsoever, but my girlfriend gives up something every year. This year she's planning to go vegan during Lent (she's already vegetarian).

Inspired by her example, I'm going to use Lent as a convenient motivator to try to get 100% back on track with the good eating that helped me lose a bunch of weight last year. I've kind of let that slip in recent months, and it's time to re-focus.

Great idea. I'm going to join you. I lost about 120 pounds over the last few years but I've put on about 20 in the last 3-4 months. I started to get back on track the last couple of weeks but this is a great time to, as you said, re-focus.

  9. Yeah, for me Franny and Zooey is the book. I can go back to that every few years and get the same feeling of pleasure. I think the religous philosophy hasn't aged with me but the writing and the tone are still perfect. Salinger captures a particular time and place perfectly.

  10. Weird for this to be my first post here. I took three or four of Zinn's courses at BU back in the late '70s. He is one of the handful of people that changed the direction of my life, influenced who I am and what I do today.

Besides what is public knowledge I remember him as an extremely nice guy. He always had time for us, never rushed us out of the office or begged off a meeting on the street. Politics aside, he was a model for how I wanted to relate to my students when I became a teacher.

I can't be too sad at his departure he made as much of his life as anyone could hope.
