  1. I was there, and picked up a couple sweet tickets center front from a fellow fan here (Thanks!), and sat next to a superfan couple from Chicago who just moved here. Kinda weird night, as noted above. I watched them here about 6-7 yrs ago, when the front was GA, and it was rocking. Tonight was definitely a money crowd, and honestly the venue sound is very marginal. Hate assigned seating at Wilco show in front - the reason I didn't get tickets when they went on sale. But couldn't resist, and glad we did. Really nice set. Energy was mixed. 8 of 11 off the new album, and this crowd in general didn't know them, which hurt the energy in the room - I liked these new tracks better live. Great version of Laminated Cat. I will say though that I won't see them again with assigned seating in front - the real fans and the energy of the crowd loses out. Austin should be rocking this weekend with GA in front - they love to play there and I wish I could be there. The Austin Stubbs BBQ show a few years back was epic - get that Roadcase if you haven't heard it. AND CRAP - they didn't play A Magazine Called Sunset!!! Never heard live - damn cell phones

  2. As long as they're not assless, I'm fine with it (I'll let you find an image of that)! B)

Also, perhaps you'd consider adding this guitar as an accessory...attachicon.gif IMG_5267.JPGattachicon.gif IMG_5335.JPG

Great write up. Going to be a very different vibe here in Austin, in concert hall venue, a first fire them in Austin that I can recall. Can't find the owl though - maybe I'm just going blind or not close enough

  3. A few songs I had never heard before in concert, including Solitaire, Cars Can Escape, Promising

i was frustrated on Promising. I knew it hardly had ever been played in concert, and I think they screwed up Nel's pickup, because you could just barely hear his accoustic steel pedal? Very softly played, but classic. Similarly finished with everyone on accoustic, including Mikael (a first for me to see) and Pat on banjo at the edge of the stage in front of their speakers on Misunderstood. Crowd singing along, almost down to a whisper so you could hear them, cause it was truly unplugged. Classic.

I thought the energy of the crowd was a bit subdued to start, and I think playing Solitare 2nd threw them, but the die-hards were eating it up. A few seat neighbors tonight will be with us on the floor tomorrow.

I missed the Austin epic, but this was the first of what appears to be an epic dual concert set in Nashville. Glad I drove up from Houston again (also in 2011). Debating the drive to Knoxville for the trifecta before a pair of Isbell shows at the Ryman on Fri & Sat. What a week of music vacation!

  4. you absolutely should have just driven to Austin - it is one of those classic venues like the Ryman that you know is going to bring out the best in the band (saw both of those). Was a little worried hearing the bad press in Dallas, but this show was intriguing. Opening with Reservations was awesome (never heard it live) - they've been opening with AOA or OSM for almost the entire new tour, including the ATL and Ryman gigs. The hollow body Rickenbacher that Jeff was playing was only upstaged by Nels on Duane's guitar (that's the 4th show I've seen that guitar at now! ;). Jeff was in a very lively mood, with a lot of banter - the remarks about the RS issue and Nels being 82nd was priceless. What was the song he played the harp on?!? That was a first for me as well! I was on the floor about 4 off the stage in front of Pat, with a great view.

I didn't think Nick was on musically, but he did look and feel like he was enjoying it. He was all smiles during the 2nd encore, as the house was screaming out the lyrics.

The recording will be worth hearing Jeff's banter alone, but this was a set to remember. Hope its a clean one! BTW, if you have any decent photos of that Rickenbacher or of the band that night, pm me please! ;)

  5. The sitting standing thing is interesting from the fan perspective.

From Wilco's perspective, however, i think it is pretty clear - when the crowd is "into it" the band sounds more "into it."

I've seen three shows this Fall (Ryman Night 2, madison, and Berlin). Ryman Night 2 and Berlin - the crowd was heavily into it and the band responded with, in my opinion, exceptional performances.

On the other hand, Madison's crowd was seated mainly and seemed not into it (e.g., "lets go brewers, lets go brewers") and the band's energy didn't seem to be there to me...and as a result the show suffered into lethargic performance.

It is really not something that can be controlled. Either the crowd is into it or not.

Cutting the encore is interesting. While the 11:00 curfew is the likely answer, it is plausible that the band got sick of the show and cut early. The Berlin show's encore was extended by three additional songs per the printed set list.

I saw both Ryman shows, and the Houston show just before the new album came out, and it definitely makes a difference in the crowd interaction. The Ryman shows were top-shelf, even though they opened one of them with OSM - this is a true favorite of mine, and I have a hard time sitting down even on this.

Heading to Austin for the show tomorrow - I expect them to have a very lively crowd. Anybody have any idea if there might be an Autumn Defense sighting in Austin? They played in Nashville (outstanding), and I saw they played at this year's SXSW.

  6.

Pleasure to have met you...glad we could provide our extra ticket to your friend Saturday night. He was as slackjawed as we were. My 6th Wilco show, by far the most memorable one because of the venue and our pew 6 feet from the stage. Mind melting stuff. Getting into Family Wash on Friday was an unexpected bonus...I'm still processing that one..."Sentimental Lady" and the Big Star cover were perfect cappers to all the great Autumn Defense songs.

That Pat Sansone is one tasty guitar player...loved Tweedy's Rickenbacker 360...loved "Box Full of Letters" in the encore...loved how many people we met at the show who, like us, had flown in for the weekend...hated the fact that the posters were sold out before I could get one.

Finally getting to see a show at the Ryman (with Wilco and Nick Lowe, no less) was worth the hectic weekend. We have some lovely venues here in Milwaukee where I live (come see a show at the Pabst Theater some time) but the Ryman...damn...that's the difference between going to a church and going to a cathedral.

well said. Pleasure was ours. Hope we cross paths again . . .

  7. - not sure there is much to add. An incredible set tonight, and as Jeff said, "if you didn't get to both shows, you only saw half". Stood in the balcony tonight. Stayed after outside and talked to each member on their way out (except Jeff, who we learned later left immediately to the bus). Nels told a story as he was signing that the Duane Les Paul was borrowed from the Allman bro museum in Macon, and that it was extra special for the museum for it to return to Nashville, where Duane was born, and ?where he (duane) proposed to his wife on the stage of the Ryman, hiding the ring in the catch where the slide was held? (that's what Nels said). He also said he was scared to play it, incredibly honored, and brought to tears when he first played it in ATL (where I had seen them Wed). We chatted about the Allmans, told him we were also big Allman fans having seen them many times, and he said that their first two albums were life changing. We agreed.

An incredible set of bookends, with Autumn Defense Friday night at the Family Wash and the chats with the band outside the Ryman tonight between 2 surreal shows. And a signed set of posters to boot. Can't wait for Austin City Limits.

Looking for pics from either show, and any of the band signing outside on Sunday night.

  8. - love to get a poster from last night if anyone can hook up. Will be there tonight early enough to trade/buy extra

    - saw them in ATL, and they opened with Art of Almost, which lit up the crowd. One Sunday Morning was late into set, and I personally thought it was more awesome later than earlier.

    - a fantastic play list at Ryman day 1; a few I had never heard and will have to do some searching for

    - did anyone else think Nel's sound was a bit low ( I know that is hard to believe)?

    - don't get me wrong, it was a reverent venue, but my wife and I were on the floor in the back and I would love to move up to the balcony tonight (got 4 in Section 4 row V tonight). My buddy hooked up in 2rd row stage right last night from some dedicated Milwaukee fans we met at Family Wash (props BTW), and obviously loved the view.

    - the scene at Family Wash on friday night was surreal, and a great way to start the weekend. It was kinda like lurking on a private party of 100 of Wilco's friends in a neighborhood bar you had to search out to find. Pat & John were fantastic, and Glenn sat in for a few songs, with Mikael hanging in the crowd. Pat laughed and said he was intimidated by the players in the crowd. If only I had a clue . . .
