  1. Here is a brief article on the in-store show.

Not entirely accurate (they report 8 songs played, there were only 7), but an adequate general overview.

One note - the band members pulled up just after 1:30 PM. Five members were driven in a not-too-recent Honda Odyssey, and Pat was a passenger in a late model Hyundai Vera Cruz. More evidence that they are pretty regular people. Except they play fantastic songs really, really well.

The vans and people driving were employees from State Theatre. Pat and Glenn were in Hyundai. And the rest of the band and head security (for Wilco) was in the other van. It was really funny to watch them drive up so fast and jump out. I was first in line so I got to see the action pretty close up.

  2.

As others and Jeff stated, people talking was by far the most disappointing thing about that night. Like I said, I was up front and during William Tyler's set, I could barely hear what he was playing because the talking was so loud. I rightly assumed that stuff would be brought up by the band later, which is unfortunate.

I was up front until Dawned on Me.  So I was there for William Tyler and the rowdy talking was really embarrassing. I felt bad for William Tyler. And like you said, it was hard to hear over the murmur.  I had my 17 year old daughter with me & she said, "Mom I'm embarrassed for Portland." I shushed 2 women in front of me a few times while WT was playing. I just couldn't take it. They moved away but continued to carry on.

I love State Theatre. I think it's fun. It has lots of options for dancing, standing & sitting. I like the bars too, great beer on tap & it's $6.50. I think beer at the Orpheum is $12.00 & good luck getting that beer. I also happen to think that State is beautifully understated. It has a Moorish / Art deco style ( different than the Orpheum) as it was built in 1929. It's from a different period hence different aesthetics.

Despite the annoyance with the talkers, they love us. They'll be back sooner than later.

  3. Wow, in the string of rock n roll deaths 2016 has brought, this is a big one for me.  One of my first really favorite bands as an aware teenager in high school, spent countless hours listening to the magic of Jefferson Airplane.  I still do.  Fly Jefferson Airplane.  Hope Paul's in a flying toaster 30 Seconds Over Winterland.

Me too! Worst so far for me.

  4. 2 quick things to add:

Great to meet gods8apedhole, who had given me perfect info about the State and where to be if I couldn't stand all night. So nice to be able to say hi and chat. And her daughter too.

After the show, I shared an elevator ride with Glenn and a couple other fans. The nicest guy, just what you would expect him to be.

Great to meet you too! I'm glad you were comfortable. For the record, the sound at State is not always muddy. It's a tough room for a sound engineer. I told Stan that he did a good job in a tough place. He was so happy for the compliment! He gave me a set list, too funny. I was thinking the sound would be better back near you guys. I kept thinking that I was too close up front but oddly I think the sound was better just being in the center even though I was so close. I like to be about 15 to 20 rows back but I got surged way up front. Have a great time this weekend!

  5. Were you able to get a bracelet? I am debating heading up to Portland early but wasn't able to go there earlier this week to get one...

Yes got a bracelet & my bracelet # is 666. I intend to show Jeff.

And they still had some yesterday. I think the post from Bull Moose was last night.

  6. Preemptive post for tomorrow's show at the State Theatre! So pumped to see them again in my hometown!

Did anybody get a wrist band for their acoustic set at Bullmoose Music? Might be a few left if you go buy Star Wars on vinyl!

And if y'all wanna keep the party going my band will be performing Yankee Hotel Foxtrot 2 blocks down the street at Empire right after Wilco plays their final note! If you have a Wilco ticket stub you can get in for $4 in stead of 6!

I did and I'm very psyched for both shows!

  7. I am with those who prefer the GA venues. None of this stand up/sit down business. Just stand up and rock! The vibe should be very different in Portland tomorrow night with the GA set up.

I posted on State Theatre page today & asked if they were adding chairs to the floor. They said NO CHAIRS. Made me so happy. I have been to GA shows at the State & they added seats.

  8. The Portland show at the State Theater is a GA show.  Does anyone know how the theater is configured for this?  I've never been there, but I assumed it's a theater setting, like the Orpheum.  But since it's a GA show, maybe not?

It's GA. No seats on the floor in front of the sound board to the stage & open seating everywhere else.  I did see Tweedy there once & it was a GA show and they added seats in that area. But there's no way they'll add seats for Wilco.

  9. Sounds like we ended up right near each other anyway cause that's where we were, did you hear the idiot screaming 'Bobby and the Midnights!' between each song?

They all looked so happy with Warren, I was looking all over the stage to see who was playing violin!

I'm still hoping for a Maine trip soon...

Haha no, I didn't hear that idiot. I agree the whole band looked happy but John was jumping out of his skin. Yes, come to Maine open invite for that whole brood. Baseball, beaches, breweries, Boston buddy (that's me), bald dogs (that's Thelma), Bates & Bowdoin (for Joey & Emma) & some cool music coming up too. FB or text me if you want to figure something out for the summer.

  10. As far as crowd reception goes I started the Wilco set in the taping section, I was in the front row there and from the tapers around me no one was looking forward to the set, I only stayed for the first song making sure my levels were good, no one seemed into it, but tapers are more focused on the recording during the first song so I'll give them a pass.  I went back to my girlfriend and some other friends after that, kinda near the tapers, the crowd was completely not into it, some looked totally bored.  After Satellite my gf wanted to go up front, it was just her second Wilco experience (Solid Sound being the first) and her first Vibes (I go every year, it's put on by my friends afterall), I'm not an up front person, it gets crazy up there, but we went, the crowd up there was great, they were clearly into it and most were singing, clearly this is where the Wilco fans were.  So from three locations I'd have to say a very mixed reception to the new songs, I was up front for the classics and everyone loved it.  I walked around after the set and I bumped into some friends at various locations none of which were Wilco fans and the phrase I heard most was 'I get it now'.  The announcer after their set said something along the lines of 'i don't know if you're religious or believe in god, but that was special', I'll get the full quote from the recording later, but he was clearly into it asking the crowd several times if they thought Wilco should come back.

I got a text that said, "Wilco is a drag." Another good friend thought it was horrible. A few other friends said that there were some "cool moments." So yeah, whatever...more for me. I left my friends in VIP. And I spent the Wilco part of the show alone. I was about 20 rows away in the center. I had tons of room to dance so that was great and nobody "bad vibed" me about dancing so that was fantastic. I'm used to being alone at Wilco so no biggie. Some people near me knew Wilco but most didn't know any Star Wars. People near me seemed 1/2 tuned in. Some people ran from the front from EKG through More. The best part for me was seeing how happy (John, Pat and Glenn) were to be playing with Warren. That was beautiful. Guess I'll have to go every Julie Wilco show now. I can't break the pattern. I couldn't come back to you guys, it was too dark; uneven surfaces and it's disorienting. Love you both.

  11. Holy Shit! That was fun. And of course that was the best California Stars in the history of the world. John was grinning ear to ear. They were all stoked but John was REALLY happy.

What a great situation, seeing Wilco in a culture where people dance. Per usual the sound was fantastic. Got to see Star Wars and a few other songs for good measure. Impossible Germany was freakin' crazy. Random Name generator, so good live.

  12. I have thoroughly enjoyed what I've caught of these performances. Anyone who is pissing all over these shows seems to have lost what the dead were about in the first place, and it's kinda sad. If their fans get as whiny and self-centered as Wilco fans it will be a sad day.

You gotta be kidding me? Deadheads invented self centered. I don't want to act like a deadhead and try to "out dead "anybody who reads this post. I hate that shit more than whiny fans. Believe me, deadheads are the most self centered, self obsessed fans in the universe. Wilco fans come in second but I can't even really speak to that. I've only seen Wilco about 18 times and my first show 2003, so I'm no Wilco cult expert.

  13. It's been interesting reading this back-and-forth about partying at SS. One thing is for sure, the drinkers and smokers are way more tolerant than the tee-totallers. I drank, smoked, and sang along with Wilco. Too bad if I offended anyone by having fun and enjoying my favorite band with my best friends. :)

    There was tea? JK.

  14. I'm going to buy the webcast for tomorrow night.  I'm too curious.  BTW, aren't they jumping the gun with the Blue-Ray release?  Seriously, what if the shows really blow or if there's lots of technical problems.  Just some thoughts.

Haha. People don't give a crap what they sound like. They are there to experience something they never had a chance to OR re-live something that was special. People who buy a blue- ray of that...hmmm IDK. And the "core-4?" They have no concern of what comes of any blue ray.  They have the best in the business for sound engineers and technology.

  15. Had some really loud drunks behind me on Friday and I would have moved but I was trying to protect my friend's tape deck (people tripping, pushing through and spilling).  Also was trying to stay reasonably close to my daughter age 17, who was about 10 feet away in front of the board with my buddies 3 boys who were a little younger 12-17 (but they are veterans).

People behind me weren't just drunk, they liked Molly & they sang to every song but changed the words with a Molly reference. It still didn't ruin anything for me. I'm sure I've been obnoxious at some point to someone at a show.

I did see a few unhappy kids over the 3 days but I saw a lot more happy, well cared for kids. And I saw a lot of unhappy couples.  Pot smoke never bothers me. In fact, I love the smell and makes me feel comfortable at a show. I have not smoked anything in 17 years. No butts or cigars detected anywhere near me at SS.

I think everyone should just stop being assholes. If someone is hanging out in a space it's their space. And if you can be nice to somebody or help someone, then you should.  I loved Saturday & Sunday. (:

  16. Hey, I might be interested. Thought I'd check here to see if anyone needed to unload tickets before I bought another pass @ mass moca.  My 17 year old has decided to join me, making final plans. PM , me if you think we can easily make that happen on short notice. Thanks. Sorry you can't make it.
