  1. New Zealand, I meant, not Australia. Whoops. I've been listening to the stream the past couple of days. For some reason I didn't like it at first, but on the second listen everything just clicked. I'm quite a big fan of it now. My point earlier was that Nels really seemed like a centerpiece of some of the songs on SBS, and I don't really get that vibe here. He seems to just be adding some accents and flourishes here and there. This album really reminds me of AGiB for some reason, and like some of those songs, I can see Nels having a bigger role during live shows. Here's a link I found a minute ago, but it doesn't say anything about Nels not being there when recording:

Anyway, I love Nels in Wilco. I personally think he's the best thing that happened to the band post-Bennett. I hope he stays with the band for years to come, but even if he leaves I have every confidence Tweedy and Wilco will continue to put out great records.

  2. I'm pretty sure I remember reading a story a couple of months ago that said Wilco recorded most of the new album in Australia without Nels. They were there collaborating on another project and really felt the need to record some stuff they had worked up, apparently, and Nels was just going to be overdubbed. I'm just about to head out, so I'm a little pressed for time or I'd look it up myself, but I thought I'd throw this out there and see if anyone else remembers that. I'll look it up a little later when I have a chance.

  3. thanks, I now I have something more intresting then homework to do this weekend. i'll def. let you all know if I get a response.

Please do, I'd love to know what you find out.

On an unrelated note, did anyone realize there was a live Woody Guthrie album issued last year? It won a Grammy for Best Historical Release, I believe is what the site said. I had no idea. I've got to get that.

  4. I know all. I was just asking if anyone knew if Jeff just saw the lyrics and remembered lulu walls or if there was a note that the song was meant to be sung to the formers melody. Which androscoggin didn't answer.

From what I understood Jeff wrote music and tweeked the lyrics for some of the numbers. I'm just curious how this came together.

Sorry, I don't know much about the making of Mermaid Avenue. I'd be interested in that myself. I listened to the demos this weekend; it had a few interesting bits on there. A solo Tweedy version of At My Window Sad and Lonely was pretty different from the album, but I think the lyrics were the same. I should go get Man in the Sand. I've never seen it before.

  5. Many of Guthrie's songs were rewrites of Carter Family songs... (Well, tradition songs that the Carter Family played). Examples: Guthrie's "Linbergh" is a rewrite of The Carter Family's "Cannonball Blues," "I Ain't Got No Home In This World Anymore" is a rewrite of the Carter Family's "I Can't Feel At Home In This World Anymore," "Tom Joad" is a rewrite of "John Hardy," "Vigilante Man" is a rewrite of "Lonesome Day." Even "This Land Is Your Land" has its roots in the Carter Family. They recorded two songs with its melody: "When The World's On Fire," and "Little Darling Pal of Mine." "Hesitating Beauty" is no doubt a rewrite of "LuLu Walls," but that doesn't mean that it isn't a Woody song. That was just how he wrote songs.

And it wasn't just Woody, that's a huge part of the folk/blues tradition. Bob Dylan still does it; his last album had several similarities to the 19th Century poet Henry Timrod. Some of those melodies and lyrics go back so far their origins are completely gone; Guthrie's are just one example of that tradition.

  6. Also - I'm really glad they started with the "It's almost gone . . . " verse. They used to play it that way but it was switched on the album, and I always liked it better as an opener. It's a great way to start a song, making you feel like you're right in the middle of something.

  7. Is this still Nels on guitar? I'm not sure who Andrew Bird is or what he's been playing, but this guitar in Box Full of Letters is rocking. I'm sitting at home, at my computer desk, and I'm having absolutely one of the best nights of the year so far. How weird is that.

  8. I'm in Mississippi. It's sort of like being outside of the US.

Hey now, I'm in Mississippi myself. The wonders of the Internets keep us connected to the rest of the world these days. So it's just like we're on the very, very edge of the US. Near Alaska, maybe.

On a side note, the horns they have are blowing me away. Killer.

  9. Wasn't there some talk a while back about the band having trouble finding enough tape to use during recording sessions since it's become so commonplace to record digitally? I remember people talking about them erasing older demos and recordings just to get some extra tape, at least.

Anybody know if Sky Blue Sky was recorded on tape or digital? I know it was recorded live, but if they went to Sear in NYC for AGiB and discarded the Loft's digital recordings, then I wonder why they wouldn't do the same thing again. Maybe they found some more tape. But I've got to say, I prefer the AGiB sound over SBS. Not sure what it is . . . maybe you could call it tape hiss. Like the beginning of Impossible Germany - that static. AGiB sounded better to my non-discerning ears. But I do love SBS.
