Midlake - "The Trials of Van Occupanther"

After first listen of the new Son Volt, this is less than memorable. "The Search" and "Highways and Cigarettes" are the lone bright spots. Hopefully, this grows on me. I had really high expectations, and to say I'm disappointed is an understatement.

I don't see it, but there's a MMJ show streaming.

This song is testament to James Mercer's vocal range and perfect pitch. It sounded really great live, too. A fun song, my favorite as well.

it's like they never left... this is the type of guitar album i've been waiting on someone to put out for the last few years now. Built To Spill do well, but damn... hope the rest is this strong. the guitar solo on the end of track 3, Pick Me Up just melted my face off.

I'm just finishing this. All I can say is

I love the song, but he video is terrible.

Not sure I've heard One Big Holiday. The only album I've listened to entirely is "Z" and parts of it I feel like I want to like--like the first track is pleasant enough, I guess. I tried another of their records at one point, but I never made it past track 2.

 

But, yeah, in my experience, "sleepy" fits. Maybe its the reverb that gives it that effect.

 

I'm not looking to turn this into a "Hate MMJ" thread or anything. I'm actually pretty indifferent to them up to this point, but maybe there's something that just hasn't clicked for me.

I can see where "Z" might be hard to listen to if you are new to the band. You should get "It Still Moves", and listen to the first 7 songs then make your decision.

"It Still Moves" is in my top 5 all time. It's simply a fantastic album.
