I have Englishman friend who has been trying to get me into football for the last 13 years -- I finally picked at Premier League team, before the beginning of last year and settled on Arsenal ---- I picked them mostly because it is Mick Jagger's favorite team.

It is has been a blast following the league. I love the structure of the league. Bottom three get regulated and such -- wish USA sports had the same system - it will help to ensure teams making sure they put a decent enough team together to compete.

My buddy is Manchester United fan -- it has been a blast watching Arsenal-United matches.  In my village, we have about another four  English transplants -- (Liverpool/Villa/City/United/Arsenal/Newcastle) are all represented. Makes for a fun day at the pub when one of the teams is playing.

Very much agree on the relegation point. It would be really exciting to see things shake up. Not that the USL has it, but it is why I am not following MLS more closely as they appear to be more interested in maintaining NFL-style dominance.

There's a fair few Arsenal supporters where I live in the Northeast - not to mention a whole vegetarian pub named after the team!

Have they revealed what the Friday special set theme will be yet?

    Not yet, no.

Did seem interesting that they chose a Mermaid Avenue song to throw onto this year's festival playlist before one of the new album cuts.image.png

Will be my first SSF and while I am honestly fairly underwhelmed by the lineup (was hoping for someone I liked a little more than Isbell for the main non-Wilco act), I am excited to dig into some of these other bands.  Have already listened to some Fenne Lily, Hailu Mergia, Ratboys and Mary Halvorsen and really am enjoying those, so hopefully the rest of my exploring will be as fruitful!

Having gone since 2013, I think this is the lineup announcement that had the fewest artists that I readily knew well.

That being said, this week has been incredibly fruitful in new listening. The band remain excellent curators and the lineup feels really eclectic. While I'm sure others might feel differently about a festival lineup/an event they attend, I've taken the approach of looking at the lineup as the live version of the band's year-end recommendations. I don't think there's ever been an artist where I was underwhelmed or disappointed with on the day.

I think it'll be a good first Solid Sound. So much of what makes the festival special is the vibe itself. Plus, we ultimately get two Wilco shows at the best museum. Far as I'm concerned, I already made out like a bandit.

  4. As I eagerly await an announcement for Solid Sound 2024, I am beginning the process of replicating a small craft I did for last year's festival.

If there's enough interest, I'll do it again!

For kicks, I made a series of bingo cards for Yo La Tengo's 2021 Hanukkah run of shows at the Bowery Ballroom. These were left in the venue lounge and it was fun to see people post their progress with them and when/if they'd hit five-in-a-row.

In 2022, I made a newer series with the blessing of the band and their awesome management team to sell at the merch table to raise some extra funds for the charities they'd focus on each night. Here's an example:

I made a few earlier in the year for Solid Sound 2022 that were primarily stashed at the record store pop-ups near Courtyard D. No bingos as the band leaned heavily on the Cruel Country tracks on Saturday (didn't really care as the set was still great). Here's one of those (there were SOLID, SOUND, and WILCO variations):

    Disclaimer:

Folks asked me throughout the weekend what they'd win. There is no prize other than the potential for an absurdly large amount of people in a crowd to shout "bingo" (why not?).

Absolutely delighted (and relieved) an external producer has been brought in. Over the moon that the producer is Cate Le Bon, who - IMO - is one of the most interesting and compelling artists out there at the moment.

As for the preview track: breezy and mid-tempo (as per usual since Schmilco), however the production touches are really nice. The stacked guitar/keyboard counterpoint moments in the chorus/outro are pure Cate Le Bon, so that bodes really well for the rest of the album.

    Wholeheartedly agree.

I feel like a bit of an outlier in that I don't have super strong hate for newer albums and try to be generous with repeated listens before an appraisal is made. And even on ones that aren't my favorites, those repeated listens always expose more and more - nice when a band has that staying power.

I guess my point is that I think it was important for the band as a unit to go without a producer for so long to develop enough confidence to make a great album whenever they step into the studio with that goal in mind. But I'm glad they seemingly are leveraging that same self-confidence to bring in the set of ears and opinions from a musician that they trust to bring something else out of them.

93XRT just said a NEW song from Wilco is coming up in a few minutes. We could be on the cusp of something!

    It's Evicted :dance

Cousins to be released Sept 29.

Missed it by a few tunes - that's cool, though!

    What did it sound like?

Not half way through the year and heychicken seems a shoe-in for this year's Via Chicago MVP (in the MWINB* category of course).

    Woo! How'd you find it?

Did any artwork show up and did those lyric buttons next to the titles work?

Hopefully this means there's an announcement soon. I would think so if they're adding it to the website.

Stumbled upon it by accident - I was trying to look up some Cruel Country lyrics and thought the blank space in the discography page seemed a little strange. Hovered over and there it was.

No artwork or lyrics attached just yet - but am very much looking forward to an official announcement when it's ready to drop.

Didn't mean to blow up the band's or website staff's spot too much. Got excited when I saw it and figured this was the place that would be most appreciated/the folks whose jaws would drop if they saw the same as I had.
