  1. Hey folks, I thought I would post a quick photo of my Tweedy SG now that I have had a chance to restore everything to the original (or as close as possible) hardware:

    TweedySG.jpg

You can see how it looked when I purchased it on the left, and how it looks now after all of my changes on the right.  I'm extremely pleased with how everything turned out, and I love the tone, look, and playability of this guitar.  My only complaint at this point is the fact that it's tough to keep the guitar in tune, as mentioned by several others in this thread.  A little graphite on the nut has helped that tremendously, though, and I may go ahead and upgrade the nut at some point since it sounds like that may solve the tuning issues completely.

If anyone is interested, here are the changes I made:

Pickguard and neck tenon cover custom made to match the original Tweedy hardware by CreamTone Vintage Design (creamtone.com)

Gibson Burstbucker 1 pickups installed to replace the Epiphone pickups that were there when I bought it (HUGE improvement in sound!!!)

    Gibson cream pickup covers

Gibson cream tone selector switch ring and knob

Custom engraved "TWEEDY" truss rod cover from Philadelphia Luthier Tools & Supplies (www.philadelphialuthiertools.com)

  2. If you buy a blank truss cover and take it to a trophy shop, or something like that, they could probably engrave Tweedy on it for a cheap price.

On a different, but SG related note, my wife hates SGs (based on the way they look).  I explaind to her that they're quite possibly the best sounding guitar ever made for rock music.  She said "then why don't you buy one" and like a dumbass, I didn't.  Instead, I said "I have a pile of guitars. I should probably figure out how to play at least one of them before getting any more."  God, I'm an idiot.

I hadn't even considered having a custom truss cover created, but that's not a bad idea!!

Sounds to me like you still have permission to buy an SG, so I think you should go for it and bring up that old conversation if you catch any heat!

On a related note, there's probably a good reason that I'm not a marriage counselor....

  3. After wanting a Tweedy SG for years and actively searching for a fair deal on a guitar in good condition for several months, I am finally the proud owner of one of these beauties.  Based on my first impression, I love the feel and the tone I'm getting out of this guitar.  I am primarily a Les Paul guy, so the SG isn't a huge departure for me....but the lighter, thinner body is a nice change of pace.  And I love the idea of the tremolo along with the way it looks on the guitar, so hopefully I won't have major tuning issues as a result.  I'm looking forward to making this one of my primary guitars!!

With all of that said, I do have a few changes I want to make to this particular guitar.  The previous owner had replaced all of the creme trim/accessories with black, which looks fine...but I would prefer to have everything back to the original colors if possible.  The "Tweedy" truss rod cover was replaced with one that simply says "SG", which I'm ok with keeping since I would imagine finding a Tweedy cover would be next to impossible (even though the Wilco fanboy in me would have liked the original), but what I really want to find is the pickguard, neck tenon cover, pickup mounting rings, and the pickup selector ring.  The search for a creme pickguard and neck tenon cover has proven to be more difficult than I would have expected, so I thought I would reach out to the folks on this board to see if anyone knows of a good place to purchase those replacement parts?  And am I correct in assuming that the standard Gibson creme colored accessories are a good match here?  Or are the colors on the Tweedy model more custom?

  4. Thanks for the setlist and reviews! I had a great time at the show last night, but I agree with everyone's assessment of the venue. Of course, compared to where the AMP was located the past few years (in a Mall parking lot......seriously!!!), this was a HUGE improvement!!! I couldn't help but chuckle and feel a little embarrassed as we walked into the venue past the "Beef Barn", though!

By my best recollection, this was my 25th Wilco show going back to the pre-Being There days. And it was my wife’s 8th Wilco show. But the big milestone for us was that this show was our 5 year old daughter’s first Wilco show, and she loved it! We have pretty much raised her on Wilco, so she was seriously excited about the show. And since we live about 20 minutes from Fayetteville and we figured this would be a fairly tame venue with the option for her to sit if necessary, we thought this would be a good first show for her. Was it the best Wilco show I have ever seen? No….but being able to take my little girl with me makes it one of my more memorable Wilco shows. :-)

Anyway, on to the show itself…..I always love it when “Misunderstood” is the opener, so we got off to a great start. Everything from “The Whole Love” sounded fantastic, and my only complaint is that I still haven’t seen “One Sunday Morning” live. But that’s a minor complaint! The highlight of the show for me was the acoustic arrangement of “Spiders (Kidsmoke)”, which took me back to the pre-AGIB versions of the song. I also enjoyed “Laminated Cat” a lot – that was an unexpected surprise.

All in all, it was a fun show that was made even more enjoyable for us because it was a rare opportunity to see my favorite band pretty much in my own back yard without having to drive a few hours! And of course, being able to see my favorite band with my little girl was a pretty great moment too. I hope everyone who made the trip to NW Arkansas for the show enjoyed your time here and the perfect Arkansas weather that we ordered up for the show!

  5. I read about freezes like that in the pinned post at the top of this board. That's really a bummer. I would be upset if I were in your shoes too. Sorry about that, but I am sure the show will be awesome from where you and your family will be sitting! Hope it's an awesome time for your daughter!

Thanks Sarah! We'll have fun regardless....I have seen Wilco from all angles and locations in venues, and it's a great show no matter where you sit. And if I had pulled up the tickets we wound up with in the first place, I probably wouldn't be the least bit upset. But it's tough to have front row tickets staring at you and then lose them due to technical issues!!! I just hope another fan wound up with those seats and not a scalper....

And yes, I can't wait to tell my little girl that she gets to go see Wilco with us this time! :-)

  6. Anyone else have major issues ordering tickets online during the presale this morning? I was logged in at 10 am sharp and pulled up row A tickets for the Fayetteville, AR show.....I entered my payment info.....and then the website wouldn't advance any further. I could click the "next" button (or whatever it's called on that page) over and over again, but nothing ever happened. Kept trying until I lost the tickets due to a timeout, and then tried again....pulled row D tickets....and the same thing happened. I finally called FrontGate's customer service (while continuing to try online) and got someone to sell tickets to me, but at that point the best we could get were mid-way back on the far right side. I've been to 30+ Wilco shows since the AM days and never had problems before (and quite a few of the recent shows have been purchased through FrontGate), but I'm extra bummed this time because we're taking our 5 year old daughter to her first ever concert. We're still excited about the show, but pretty bummed that we didn't get the front row tickets that I pulled up originally!!!

  7. Must be missing one more because the last one was called 8. I assume there were 7 before it.

Camp Oswego is the one that everyone forgets. It was in the summer of 99, and it's definitely overshadowed by Big Cypress since that took place just a few months later.

  8. I finally got the Clifford Ball DVD box set, and I must say thank God this stuff was filmed. THIS is the way I like to remember the band. I wasn't at The Ball but I saw them just a few days before this and it was so obvious by this time that the band was just going to get BIG - but to experience the band before they were 'on the radar' was just such a beautiful thing. Just the thing I needed after Jerry's demise.

They hadn't got lazy yet, or got into bad stuff...they were just killing everywhere they went. This is my favorite fest.

Now to the obvious question: this took 13 years to see the light of day, how long must we wait for a treatment like this for Big Cypress?

A huge boxed set of all things Big Cypress has been on my "most wanted" list ever since we left that festival and found out that there really weren't any good soundboard recordings because the FM stream they planned to broadcast didn't work as expected. I don't know anyone who was there who doesn't want a huge audio/video set that covers that entire weekend.

I am still really enjoying "Joy" -- this may actually be my favorite studio album that they have ever released. I haven't been to a Phish show since '02 (hit over 30 shows between 95 - 01), but after listening to Festival 8 I'm convinced that I really need to make it a point to see them next year.

And by the way, has anyone heard the "Party Time" bonus disc that came with the big Joy Box that was released through their website? Any thoughts? I would love to hear it, but can't bring myself to spend the cash on the huge box just for one disc.

  9. the philly show a couple months ago was pretty full, mid-size theater type venue

walbourne is a beast. the current band is very very good

my only complaint about son volt live shows is that the set list NEVER varies

so if you saw him a few months ago, some might feel there's no compelling reason to see them the next time they swing around because you're going to get the exact same set

i'll go see 'em anywhere anytime, but i can see where some people wouldn't because you're not going to get anything old (except windfall and tear-stained eye -- no uncle tupelo) and you're not going to get anything different

I was also a little surprised about the lack of older material. This was my first time seeing the band this year (I have been seeing them since the "Trace" days, so I have quite a few shows under my belt by now), but it seems like past tours have had a few more older tunes sprinkled in. I don't expect "Graveyard Shift" or "Factory Belt", but at least one or two tunes from Straightaways and Wide Swing Tremolo would be nice. With that said, though, the slight re-working of "Ten Second News" with Jay on electric guitar was all sorts of awesome on Monday night.

And by the way, Peter Brutnell was great as the opener. Son Volt minus Jay joined him for the last few songs of his set, and I was really impressed. I haven't kept up with him since his "Normal For Bridgewater" disc several years ago, but I think it's time for me to check out what he's been up to lately.

  10. Saw Son Volt in Fayetteville, AR a couple of nights ago. It was a good show, but I was surprised by how small the crowd was. There were maybe 200 people there and the band didn't even play in the main room of George's like usual -- they played the extremely small front room, and it wasn't even packed. While it was very cool to be about 6 feet away from one of my musical heroes for the night, it was depressing to see such a poor turn out. Are crowds this far down in other cities on this tour, or was it just our show in NW Arkansas?

Aside from the small crowd, I enjoyed the show. I'm just so-so for the new album, but some of those tracks were outstanding in the live setting. As has been mentioned, the first 2/3 of the show is pretty mellow/mid-tempo....but most Farrar fans aren't too bothered by that at this point. The band sounded fantastic, Mark Spencer's pedel steel and keys were perfect, and James Walbourne is my favorite Son Volt 2.0 guitarist so far. And when they turned the volume up for the last few songs, they blew the roof off of the room. Good times....and I hope they come back to Fayetteville despite the turn out this time!

  11. The Show in Fayetteville was nearly ruined for me by the presence of douchebag frat boys and their skeezy drunken girlfriend. I'm pretty sure they had no idea who the band was and were just there to get wasted and dance like they're "up in the club." Half of them were kicked out two songs into the opener's set. The night would have been a disappointment had they not closed with "Just Like Heaven." That redeemed the evening for me. :dancing

Agreed on the crowd in Fayetteville. I don't know what it is about the crowds here, but it always seems to me like 50% of the people at every show either think they absolutely must hippie-twirl dance at all times.....or they are the typical frat boys who push their way to the front of the stage so they can continue their conversations at an even louder volume. I know that element exists everywhere, but I don't remember it being this bad in other places I have lived.

With that said, though, Dinosar Jr were absolutely fantastic. Even though I own all of their albums, this was my first time seeing them live and they did not disappoint. J's guitar was even better than I expected, and I had high expectations!! And even though there have been some comments about their set list being too predictable, I was very pleased with the song choices since this was my first time seeing them. The free 7" is also extremely cool.....now I just have to get a record player!

  12. The camera crew was also at the Cain's Ballroom show in Tulsa earlier this year -- they interviewed and filmed several of us in line before the show. Apparently they were the same crew that filmed the "Sunken Treasure" DVD, and there were definitely plans at the time to release a multi-city live DVD. I haven't heard much about the projet since that show, though....hopefully it's still in the works. Not only would I love to have a new Wilco concert DVD, but I'm also hoping for a few seconds of Wilco-fame as they show the crowd in Tulsa!

  13. So is anyone else having trouble getting the actual download to work? I get to the screen that tells me to Click to download the Sky Blue Sky Bonus, but nothing happens when I click.

I'm running the latest version of Quicktime on Vista Home Premium. If anyone has any ideas (other than "upgrading" to XP...which will probably be happening soon), it would be much appreciated!

  14. Anybody know what's up with Springfield? I ran home from work to buy tickets at 10:00, and the Springfield show isn't listed on the Music Today page at all....even though the Wilco tour page still says the pre-sale starts today at 10. It's not that hard to confuse me...but this is definitley doing it!
