  1. I realize now that my post went way off topic and into the personal., which is how it is with those you truly admire. You relate on a personal level. There isn't a helluva  lot of people that make me feel like that.

Love ya, man. It was a beautiful story and I'm glad you shared!

  2. The Criterion channel app. Definitely the best movie streaming service out there. Huge art house / indy / foreign classics library.

I'm a huge Criterion fan. Over the weekend I watched several early short films by the Safdie brothers ("Uncut Gems") on the streaming service.

  3. Mine would be Citizens. I actually don't dislike it, it's merely the song I like. The rest I love.

I'm in the same spot. Lyrically, "Citizens" is right up my alley, but sonically the song doesn't grab me. "White Wooden Cross" and "One and a Half Stars," on the other hand, are album highlights for me.

  4. Well, the new album is finally here. After a dozen spins, I feel confident in ranking Ode to Joy at the very bottom of my list. As a long-time Wilco fan, I'm not happy or sad about this. It is what it is. Given the band's recent trajectory, though, I feel safe in saying that the only thing that could possibly bump the new album from the bottom is the next album (barring some kind of space-time continuum miracle).

  5. True. No other drummer would play what Glenn does on Cry All Day. The guitar textures on Common Sense are a perfect Tweedy/Cline matchup. John's basslines are as melodic as ever. And there's usually a solid 20-35% of what is making your ears happy that can later be identified as a Jorgensen, Sansone addition.

This is dead on. "Cry All Day" is major Wilco.

  6. Is no one monitoring the SPAM posting anymore or is it just a function of how dead it’s become around here?

Over the last few days I've moderated more than 60 spam threads/posts. Those users are then blocked. We're trying to stay on top of the epidemic!

  7. Another teacher here. For 22 years I have taught English, primarily honors American literature and film studies, at a large suburban high school north of Milwaukee. I've also sporadically written about cinema for nearly 30 years, including a five-year stretch when I produced a weekly print newspaper column.

  8. If the trajectory of the Brewers follows that of the Cubs then it's their turn for a ring. Which I wouldn't pissed about. There's a rivalry which keeps getting better but I don't hate 'em like I do the Cards.

You already know how I'd feel about a Brewers championship!

“Never Look Away,” an Oscar nominee for foreign language film and cinematography, is an epic 188-minute drama about a German painter haunted by his childhood under first the Nazis and then the East German regime. It’s a sweeping, romantic movie about history, love, and sex, but mostly it’s about art and the creative impulse. It’s the kind of classic cinema that they say they don’t make anymore. I loved every minute and am thankful to have seen it on the big screen.
