  1. Are you folks able to access your digital copy? I preordered the download but its says my order is being prepared.

Haven't gotten my links yet, either. I ordered directly through the Wilco store (Kung Fu Nation), but the Shopify page still says the order is being prepared. I received the vinyl a few days ago, but still no download links. I e-mailed Kung Fu Nation about it last night, and they just sent the link to the pre-order download (i.e.  Laminated Cat mp3) which should have been sent at the time of the order almost 3 weeks ago. Still haven't received the download links for the full album. Emailed them again, so we'll see what happens. They seem to be using Shopify now for their online transactions, which I have found to be inferior to whatever they were using before. Never had problems with orders in the past. Hopefully the links will come soon.

Meanwhile, the vinyl sounds great :)

Edit: Kung Fu Nation sent me a dropbox link for the downloads, even though I still never received the official download link.

  2. Poor Moon is absolutely essential.  After you work through HGM's catalog, you might want to check out MC Taylor's old band, The Court & Spark.

Great to see some HGM love around here.

Totally agree, the Court & Spark was a fantastic band (one of my all time favs). It was interesting to hear some of the early iterations of HGM right after C&S called it quits (lots of dub-influenced songs) and how it's evolved into the current sound. The most recent albums have just been getting better and better. Though I still love Country Hai East Cotton.

If you haven't already, definitely check out Scott Hirsch's solo album "Blue Rider Songs", came out last summer I believe. He played bass with HGM for a while, and was the guitarist in the Court & Spark. Longtime collaborator with Mike Taylor. One of my top albums of 2016.

  3. 6.22.94 is an absolute monster. A must have recording of the band at their peak. Unbelievable energy.

You need to hear the second set. The string of madness to start the second set is one of my all time faves:

    2001->Mikes->Simple->Catapult->Simple->Icculus->Simple->Hydrogen->Weekapaug .....Nuff said :worship

Great great show. The Harpua in that one always makes me laugh. "Jimmy..... your cat got hit by a comet!" Classic.

edit: oops, that was 7/16/94 I was thinking about...

  4. so what can you all recommend for someone that likes the spice / pumpkin beers?

Anchor Brewing puts out their Christmas Ale every year around the holidays (should be out in the next few weeks, I hope!). It's not a pumpkin beer, but has a spiciness that's you might liken to gingerbead or pumpkin pie. The ale itself is darker but not too chewy. Highly recommended :cheers

  5. I just wanted to know who else bought tickets for the Portland show?

    Holla Oregon Wilco fans! Woot-Woot!

Didn't get tix yet, but am thinking of roadtripping up from SF to catch this one. Edgefield is a great place in its own right, but seeing Wilco there would just be gravy. Suddenly I am in the mood to drink a Ruby :)

  6. i grabbed that last night but havent listened yet. Its been on my 'must hear' list for some time so thanks for reminding me!

Speaking of Dillard & Clark, "Through the Morning, Through the Night", which followed "Fantastic Expedition...", is also pretty good. These two albums are also packaged as a double album now, as I recall.

  7. The usual lesser-known California bands I plug around here:

The Mother Hips (just brought out a new album recently that's excellent)

The Court & Spark (and their current side project Hiss Golden Messenger)

Billy Midnight (their self-titled first album is awesome, alas, out of print...PM me if you want to take a listen)

The former two bands have opened for Wilco at some point in their respective careers.

  8. it's pretty decent so far... not amazing or anything, but not Gimme Fiction Pt. 2 at least either

On the first listen, I was thinking "Gimme Fiction Pt II" but after a bit of digesting it's starting to develop its own personality, particularly toward the latter half of the album. I'm definitely hearing some recycled riffage/changes from Fiction (M. Valentine and I Summon You come to mind here), but it sounds pretty good nonetheless. Will need to give it some more time.

the horns are a nice touch.

I agree, the horns are a nice addition to this one. Really tastefully done.

  9. i didn't realize they have a "Black and Tan" flavor. i dunno about that :unsure Vermonty python looks good, though.

Black and Tan is fantastic! I've been having more trouble finding it lately compared to the other flavors, though. Maybe the thought of stout ice cream doesn't appeal to people so much, even though it basically tastes like vanilla ice cream with a hint of stout. It's a very subtle flavor, especially in contrast with the more dominant chocolate ice cream with which it's paired. Really good, though---worth trying if you can find it.

  10. We walked out after a few songs when REM did a headlining set at the annual Bridge School Benefit show back in 1998. Michael Stipe just seemed so disinterested in being there, in contrast with all the other artists that performed that day. I know that's his stage persona and all, but it really turned me off to a band that I had previously liked (still like their older stuff). But at least we got a head start on beating the parking rush.

I once saw an entire venue walk out at a Smashing Pumpkins show in Santa Barbara around 1993. A lot of people in the crowd were booing the opening act (Shudder to Think) so when the Pumpkins came on for their set, they played about five songs then completely chewed out the crowd for booing their friends. Then they walked off stage and invited the openers to come back up. 95% of the audience (ourselves included) just up and left. Never found out if the Pumpkins came back on again that night.

  11. I listened to this album a few times 2 days ago and really like the composition of the songs, the sound of the instruments, the time changes in the tunes, and the overall vibe of the band. I cannot, however, get past the little girl/ near-falsetto voice of the chick ( I think it's a chick) singing in the majority of the tunes. She has a nice voice but she sings in too high of a register for my liking.

I think Runner's Four is a fantastic album. I've heard some hardcore fanboys/girls say that Runner's Four is "Deerhoof for people who don't understand Deerhoof", which sounds a bit snobby to me, but I suppose that record is slightly more accessible than their earlier outings. The drone at the end of "Spirit Ditties of No Tone" is an overt nod to Wilco. Satomi's vocals annoyed me at first too, with the whole high-register cute-sy thing. But I really liked the music, and after a while the vox grew on me. I saw them live a few months back and they put on a great show.

  12. Just saw Grizzly Man and thought it was pretty good.

Check out that film Julien Donkey-Boy---Werner Herzog is in it (acting, not directing). Pretty unusual movie, as is the often the case with Harmony Korine's projects. Herzog's character is pretty f'd up and creepy in this one.
