  1. Same here, and I actually have a bunch of other Coltrane that didn't make that list ... though I have to say that (obviously) if someone just focused on them, great as they are, they'd be missing out on a lot.

Not to hijack the thread, but anybody have Coltrane's Complete 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings? I've been resisting the temptation to buy it, but I think I may "need" it. :lol

Agreed that one should branch out from Miles and Trane pretty quickly before buying their entire back catalog (like that's even possible).

Re VV, I have it and love it but whether you need it depends on whether you have the original, i.e. the "incomplete" version. It's a chunk of money but I've seen it relatively cheap online.

  2. From the list I posted above, I have and love:

Miles Davis - Kind of Blue - 1959

    John Coltrane - A Love Supreme - 1964

    John Coltrane - Giant Steps - 1959

    Stan Getz & Jo

  3. Here is a top 50 from http://home.austarnet.com.au/petersykes/jazz100/top100.html that is pretty good. There is so much jazz and it's so hard to tell what you're going to like that I would just start with some of the obvious "landmark" CDs and see what grabs you. Lists are stupid and I could find lots of fault with this one, but this is as good a way to start as any.

  4. I was reading Pf's top 200 songs of the '60s and was interested in hearing the following:

Brian Wilson: "Surf's Up (solo piano version)"

    (Van Dyke Parks/Brian Wilson)

    1966

    Chart info: U.S. (N/A), UK (N/A)

Available on Good Vibrations: Thirty Years of the Beach Boys

I looked on Oink to download just this song but can't tell which version on that box set is being referenced here. Anyone know? There seem to be three versions on it and AMG is no help either. Thanks.

  5. I saw Richard Thompson a year ago and it was boring as hell. Sure, it was great for a little while but 2 and a half freakin' hours is a little long. I might add that he was playing solo with his brother on bass, so that may make a difference. I wouldn't go see him solo again.

Sorry you didn't like him; I'm a fan boy so I can't be very objective. FYI, Danny Thompson is no relation.

  6. This is the most recent solo show I have. Great cover of Brittney (sp?) Spears and funny jab at Madonna. It's MP3 at 192. Hope you like it and report back if you end up being able to see him.

    Richard Thompson (solo)

    Rio Theater, Santa Cruz, CA

    2/9/2002

    Cooksferry Queen

    Word Unspoken Sight Unseen

    Wall Of Death

    Stay

    My Daddy Is A Mummy

    Happy Days/Auld Lang Syne

    1952 Black Lighting

    Be Thankful To Your Maker

    Red Rose Blooms

    St. Patrick's Hands

    Destiny

Story: A Thousand Years Of Music Medley

    I Know A Lucky Fellow

    Shenandoah

    Oops I Did It Again

    Outside of the Inside

    The Ghost of You Walks

    Turning of the Tide

    Pharaoh

Fan Mail Chat/Crawl Back (Under My Stone)

    Encore Break 1

    Persuasion

    Madonna's Chat

    Madonna's Wedding/I Misunderstood

  7. I would for sure. I think BBH knows more. All the songs I know I love, plus a few covered by other people.

I would definitely recommend seeing Richard Thompson if possible. Is he solo or with band? I've seen him with his band twice and he is so amazing. I've heard that his solo shows are also great. He is such a good live performer with an extensive catalog to draw from. I can do a YSI of a live show if you'd like; most recent I have is probably 2004.

  8. I know people hate lists (despite the strong urge to make them ourselves) but I am surprised by the backlash against this one. I thought it was a pretty good list. To me, the ordering needs a little work but what's included and what's not included is as good as any list I've seen.

I think the VU were influential far beyond any of the bands they mentioned and deserve a high place on that list. Not 1 but a high place.

wouldn't it make sense to just get lots of bands/artists, ask them all which albums influenced them, and then you'd....have the albums....that influenced the most artists.....the most...?

This was how Rolling Stones Top 500 list was made I believe and everyone bitched about that one too.

  9. Beth Orton - Comfort of Strangers

Certainly better than the last one but not sure (yet) how this compares to the first two. Love the sound of this record though. Another A+ effort from Mr. O'Rourke.
